Whatever happens and I do hope it is a good outcome for him, the fact that it was announced is a bit WTF. He could have pretended to stay at home due to a cold/virus for the Christmas Day Service, where all the press are out in their droves watching them all. He would be entitled to just stay indoors surely?

I am getting far too invested in this now, but anyway, wish him well.

I think I remember Her Maj being ill over Christmas a while ago. No worries, she bounced back.

And hopefully Dof E will too with a break in the hospital.

We shall see.

eddiemairswife · 20/12/2019 17:36

As someone earlier pointed out, they must have passed en route.......her going to Sandringham by train, him travelling to London by road. Though, in a normal family, I would expect a wife to visit her 98yr old husband in hospital before going on her Christmas break.
Perhaps she wanted to get away from the Prime Minister as quickly as possible.

PlasticPatty · 20/12/2019 17:39

It isn't anything. He goes in to avoid church on Christmas day, to avoid standing for hours at ceremonies, to be let off from attending events... He's ancient, he's married to the Queen, he gets some perks.

Usually.

I hope the DoE is going to be Ok not just for him but he and the Queen have been together for so long.

There are too many cases of elderly couples where one dies and the other one can't live without them and dies swiftly thereafter.

The loss of the Queen would be horrendous. Imagine that Brexit and No Queen in the same year. It would be like the Apolcalypse.

WireBrushAndDettolMaam · 20/12/2019 17:40

I think it’s actually not that uncommon for those of the older generation to practically live separate lives.

Because by then, they’ve worked out the key to remaining happily married - separate lives Grin

Fucck · 20/12/2019 17:42

I honestly think this is nonsense, he's retired after all. He doesn't need an excuse not to attend functions, especially not after the hospital stay he had after the royal barge thing.

PlomBear · 20/12/2019 17:43

I certainly won’t be saddened when the Queen dies. Her family will be. She has no idea who any of us are!

WireBrushAndDettolMaam · 20/12/2019 17:43

They’ve been married for so long. Together for much less time.

There are too many cases of elderly couples where one dies and the other one can't live without them and dies swiftly thereafter.

They’ve been living without each other for years.

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 20/12/2019 17:46

The KE VII is very comfortable and the food is very nice. He’ll probably be sitting in bed with a cuppa watching TV. It’s a bit out of the way (down a side street in Marylebone) so fairly quiet for central London.

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 20/12/2019 17:48

The Queen may not have been able to alter the timing of her journey without inconveniencing rail staff etc so she probably wouldn’t change it.

PlasticPatty · 20/12/2019 17:49

Observe with an open mind and all will become clear.

Fucck · 20/12/2019 17:51

I think I'm fairly open minded, thanks!
Still don't think a 98yr old retired man needs a fancy collusion story to get out of church!

chillykiwi · 20/12/2019 17:51

He is 98 years old. He’s had a good innings and a privileged life. It’s sad for his family.

He's in hospital, he's not dead unless you know something we don't.

I have friends who work at the Beeb who are having an unusually hectic day for this time of year. Make of that what you will.

Anybody would think we'd just had an election or were waiting for news about Brexit.

Its a bit weird they keep saying it was a "planned admission"- what, right before Christmas? I highly doubt that.

I don't think the normal rules apply when you are the D of E do they?
A planned admission can be an emergency, my c-section was an emergency but was still planned.

When I said Annus Horribilis, as it turns out, I of course meant Annus mirabilis. Compared with this year, that really was quite the breeze.

Grin Seriously though, I think the year is ending on a sad note for many who have had it worse than the queen. Whaakari, the families of the two people killed in London recently and other things.

It saddens me that he's living on his own these days (without family I mean as opposed to staff).

I think he has a frequent visitor.

He’s had pernicious anaemia for years.

Is he a knid?

Charles and Camilla live in different houses- no-one thinks that is odd.

I'd think it was odd if they didn't...I think I'd want to.

More elderly couples seem to be living apart now people are living longer or because they need different care. My parents are in different care homes because they both need extremely different care and can't be in the same one.

ManonBlackbeak · 20/12/2019 17:55

Id imagine thats more to do with the Brexit stuff and Boris getting his bill through parliament. There's quite a lot happening news wise today.

AJPTaylor · 20/12/2019 17:59

Lol. Poor sod prob realised Andrew was invited for lunch

CurlyWurlyTwirly · 20/12/2019 18:06

That is not widely known.
She has her home; but they do live together sometimes too.
I think having a certain amount of seperate lives at that age would be normal.

CurlyWurlyTwirly · 20/12/2019 18:08

The Queen is probably knackered and desperate for a break.

I think Prince Phillip has a regular companion; Penny, Lady Brabourne

CurlyWurlyTwirly · 20/12/2019 18:09

Currently talking about it on the news.
DofE arrived in a car and walked into hospital.

I know the speech is pre-recorded, I'm thinking it's an excuse not to broadcast it.

They'd only consider that if he had died or looked as if he was about to. The fact that he walked into the hospital and the Queen's fucked off to Sandringham clearly suggests that's not the case.

And why on earth would they be desperate not to broadcast it anyway? It's all been recorded, it's not like they'd be saving themselves or the Queen any trouble.

Jumpi · 20/12/2019 18:11

I don’t see this as odd. We spend 3 weeks of summer near H’s family. This year, I headed over and he stayed behind for work. I had to travel back (5 hours) for a hospital appointment a couple of days after he arrived.

Had I cancelled it, I would have had to wait months for another. So nothing suspicious, just awkward timing.

stairway · 20/12/2019 18:12

People had it worse than that in the war, he’s had over 70 years of privilege which I’d probably why he’s still alive.

astralweaks · 20/12/2019 18:15

Horrible speculation on this thread and unpleasant levity about Prince Philip’s state of health. Not nice.

kinsss · 20/12/2019 18:32

Well the RF belongs to us not the other way around really. Wish them all the best, and hopefully after the Christmas din, DofE will emerge from his private room with a spring in his step.

Timing is odd for a "planned admission" but hey maybe he will be out before Christmas Day and all will be well.
