Thank you to the lovely poster who started a thread attempting to further embarrass me. Sadly, it was deleted. So here I am.. AMA!

What's your daily work-out routine? Yoga or high impact aerobics?

NuffSaidSam · 23/03/2024 16:20

Was it a spelling mistake or have you heard incorrectly and say rest bite? Have you read the word respite and thought it meant something else/was a different word?

Pilates. But for the sake of this thread, I’m going to spell it Plaites

I must have missed that thread. What's rest-bite? Some sort of snack? Can I have a piece of cake for mine?

No, to be fair, I’m not great at spelling. I spelt it the way it sounded to me. Obviously wrong.

Haha. It’s people who think respite is actually rest bite… like a bite of rest maybe?
It’s respite. Like if you’re caring for someone and they go to an in-patient place for a couple of days to give you some respite.

BringBackTeletext · 23/03/2024 16:23

Have you considered taking in some ironing?

Saucery · 23/03/2024 16:23

There’s a place for being a pedant but in the middle of a thread isn’t it. If you can read and understand something, why be a dick about it?
I can see how people get to ‘rest-bite’ from ‘respite’ via the meaning of a break or rest from something - language is fascinating and mistranslation like that moves so much faster these days thanks to social media.

Ask you something?……..er…….what’s your favourite biscuit? And I give not the tiniest shit how you spell it Grin

ANiceBigCupOfTea · 23/03/2024 16:23

The thread mocking the spelling mistakes says so much more about them than it does about you.
My DH is one of the best and most amazing people I have ever known and he has Dyslexia so spelling is not his strong suit. To me it's crass and cheap to mock people who struggle with spelling!

Oh I’d love to, but I have enough of my own. I need a little rest-bite!

Are you on benefits/in a council house.

That seems very important when SPAG happens on here.

Singingtheraininspain · 23/03/2024 16:26

I’m a phonetics specialist and the sound ´p’ makes in the middle of a word is basically identical to the sound ´b’ makes at the start of a word. So you’re still wrong but don’t let anyone make you feel stupid over this. It’s entirely understandable why you’d hear ´rest bite’. And it’s got ´rest’ in it which is similar to the meaning of ´respite’.

ZaZathecat · 23/03/2024 16:26

Do you wash the whole family's sheets every day?

SuperstarDeejay · 23/03/2024 16:27

Despite (dust bite?) the embarrassment are you glad you know now? Or would you have preferred to crack on with rest bite forever, in blissful ignorance?

Oh well, you’d probably be surprised to hear I’m not on any benefits. But I have heard that most people on benefits also cannot spell respite! Lots of research about this.

Good question! Nope very glad to have been corrected. Correcting is enough, but trying to further embarrass me isn’t. (The other poster, not you).

WHAT???? Mind blown.

It's almost like absolutely anyone can mishear something and make a mistake.

Who would have known.

FWIW op I heavily rely on predictive text (and I'm on disability benefits, just to add to the statistic).

helpfulperson · 23/03/2024 16:33

Out of all the mispellings/misunderstood phrases I've seen it's the one that actually makes sense. A little bite of rest seems perfectly logical. I think I will start using it.

Keeprejoining · 23/03/2024 16:34

I assumed it was a cute way to say it, maybe a family thing. Disappointed it's a mistake. You could have styled it out OP.

Pilates. But for the sake of this thread, I’m going to spell it Plaites

Or pronounce it pilots as I did for years.

"I'm taking a rest bite from pilots" works well I think.
You're a good sport OP
