Thank you to the lovely poster who started a thread attempting to further embarrass me. Sadly, it was deleted. So here I am.. AMA!

What's your daily work-out routine? Yoga or high impact aerobics?

Was it a spelling mistake or have you heard incorrectly and say rest bite? Have you read the word respite and thought it meant something else/was a different word?

No, to be fair, I’m not great at spelling. I spelt it the way it sounded to me. Obviously wrong.

It’s respite. Like if you’re caring for someone and they go to an in-patient place for a couple of days to give you some respite.

Have you considered taking in some ironing?

There’s a place for being a pedant but in the middle of a thread isn’t it. If you can read and understand something, why be a dick about it?
I can see how people get to ‘rest-bite’ from ‘respite’ via the meaning of a break or rest from something - language is fascinating and mistranslation like that moves so much faster these days thanks to social media.

The thread mocking the spelling mistakes says so much more about them than it does about you.
My DH is one of the best and most amazing people I have ever known and he has Dyslexia so spelling is not his strong suit. To me it's crass and cheap to mock people who struggle with spelling!

That seems very important when SPAG happens on here.

I’m a phonetics specialist and the sound ´p’ makes in the middle of a word is basically identical to the sound ´b’ makes at the start of a word. So you’re still wrong but don’t let anyone make you feel stupid over this. It’s entirely understandable why you’d hear ´rest bite’. And it’s got ´rest’ in it which is similar to the meaning of ´respite’.

Despite (dust bite?) the embarrassment are you glad you know now? Or would you have preferred to crack on with rest bite forever, in blissful ignorance?

Oh well, you’d probably be surprised to hear I’m not on any benefits. But I have heard that most people on benefits also cannot spell respite! Lots of research about this.

FWIW op I heavily rely on predictive text (and I'm on disability benefits, just to add to the statistic).

Out of all the mispellings/misunderstood phrases I've seen it's the one that actually makes sense. A little bite of rest seems perfectly logical. I think I will start using it.
