Thank you to the lovely poster who started a thread attempting to further embarrass me. Sadly, it was deleted. So here I am.. AMA!

My favourite one is Mangetout pronounced Man Get Out, slightly off topic but it made me howl 😂

They could serve cockporn!

And crips.

MummaMummaJumma · 23/03/2024 16:21

No, to be fair, I’m not great at spelling. I spelt it the way it sounded to me. Obviously wrong.

Don't worry about. There are some condescending bitches on here

Singingtheraininspain · 23/03/2024 19:35

I am quite fond of ´for all intensive purposes’. Makes perfect sense. I’m not sure how many times I wrote it in essays before my A level English teacher corrected me.

StrawberryJellyBelly · 23/03/2024 19:35

My grandma used to insist the only place to buy proper undergarments was in the ‘lingery’ dept of our local dept store.

soupfiend · 23/03/2024 19:38

I work in a role where we often arrange and work with respite for our client group

I cannot tell you how many professionals say and write rest bite, even on client records. Incredible.

soupfiend · 23/03/2024 19:38

A lot of these mishearings are 'eggcorns' arent they?

Its a well known phenomenon

SpringSprungALeak · 23/03/2024 19:41

MummaMummaJumma · 23/03/2024 16:42

Yay, there’s more of us. I shall call us the ‘rest-biters’

@MummaMummaJumma

Love that!!!

People have been writing rest-bite on here for years.

i loved it the first time I saw it. It's cute and it actually says what it is, a bite of rest, far better than Re spite.

i also think that the people that need it can be forgiven for spelling however the fuck they do.

I didn't see the thread. But don't let that twat upset you. 🌷

Nofunnybusiness · 23/03/2024 19:44

I 100% thought it was rest bite until now! Who knew!? Well lots of people apparently! My question for AMA is now should it be Chester draws or chest of draws?🤔

Drawers

SallySunrise · 23/03/2024 19:45

I like the idea of a rest-bite. I'll take a foot rub and a packet of crisps for mine. Seabrooks beefy.

It’s not a bad error to have made. If you’ve not seen “respite” written down, rest-bite is a more logical spelling. It incorporates the word “rest” in full, which is the whole point of a period of respite and also makes it seem like you might get a bite to eat during this rest.

bearfood · 23/03/2024 19:52

OP, you are hilarious and a good sport. Fair play to you.

Wonderfulstuff · 23/03/2024 20:05

For all intensive purpose maybe you need some rest-bite from this site? I've been wandering if it's maybe time to upcycle that Chester draws you'd meaning to do? Or perhaps go for a drive but be sure to check your review mirror. Pls delete if not aloud. :)

I remember the girl who broke the Internet by referring to the then US president as Baraco Barner 🤣🤣

My sister (40s, degree, nice flat overlooking fancy park) thought it was rest-bite until very recently too.

Do you leave your washing out to get darked on or do you bring it in?

Any cake left? 🎂

Edited

I’ve heard of this before ‘to get darked’, what does that mean?

Yes, cake for all!

How do you plan to atone for your egregious mistake?

I could do plenty. Possibly put out a public apology to all those offended, or hand myself in to my local police station for questioning.

I think my best plan though is to have a laugh about it and move on 😜

Mishearing phrases like this is so common there’s a word for it : Mondegreen

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mondegreen

Or arguably "rest-bite" is an Eggcorn.

Lampslights · 23/03/2024 20:45

i think everyone makes mistakes sometimes. To be honest though the one which always surprises me is people who don’t know drawers are drawers and call them draws. And that’s as I can’t fathom how they haven’t seen it written down, even on a tv advert for bedroom furniture etc. It’s such a common word. I out the knife back in the kitchen drawer. Not the draw.

I can see how someone maybe hadn’t seen respite, but to not know a drawer is called a drawer and not a draw, always catches my attention, although I don’t write a correction, just spell it correctly and hope the op notices.

Have you considered taking in some ironing?

😁

LiterallyOnFire · 23/03/2024 20:46

It's a Mumsnetism for leaving your washing out in the line after dark, which some people freak out about. There's a related worry about spider willies (or something like that). I'm too much of a slattern to understand what the fuss is all about. Smile
