Thank you to the lovely poster who started a thread attempting to further embarrass me. Sadly, it was deleted. So here I am.. AMA!

I bet you say flying with the angles aswell 😉

MummaMummaJumma · 24/03/2024 08:57

It’s been fun gang. Thank you all for sharing your spelling mishaps and supporting me in my ‘8 mile last battle rap scene moment’ (If you know, you know).

One last one for the road. I used to say ‘prefectionist’ instead ‘perfectionist’. But I now know more than I did about spelling and after 33 years, I can finally spell ‘respite’.

Goodbuy 😜 (that’s a joke btw, don’t come for me)

Fairwell Mumma, and thanks for the rest bite. 💐

JustCleaningtheBBQ · 24/03/2024 09:58

Bye @MummaMummaJumma

There are still posters coming on the original rest-bite thread to laugh at the OPs mistake. Dicks.

I've enjoyed this thread so much I don't want it to die.

Perhaps we should kidnap the OP and hope she develops Stockholder Syndrome 🤣

I also like ‘wrestler’s night’ for when people have been tossing and turning.

She's being used as an escape goat

I thought hyperbole was pronounced hyper-bowl for years 😂

Yeah I thought this til about 3 years ago. Also, I didn't even hear of the word til about 15 years ago. In my 30s!

Bone apple tea!

WTF?!* *LOL!!!😆

Everyone is 'aloud' to make mistakes, even those who went out and 'brought' a dictionary..😉

@LuciaSoto · Yesterday 22:13

I actually just saw that comment on the original thread, and was thinking how gracefully you took the correction. I’ve also seen loads of people make that specific spelling mistake.

Surely you mean pacific spelling mistake? Grin

@Notinthemood12 · Today 08:11

I bet you say flying with the angles as well. 😉

And, 'u shud not ov bin taken.' Grin

@MummaMummaJumma Thank you for this utterly brilliant thread. It's comedy gold, seriously. FlowersSmile There are so many funny posts on it! (And so many warm and lovely posters!) In fact you sound fucking amazing OP, and funny and intelligent! Star

What's everyone having for Sunday lunch?

I like my meat cooked evenly, so I'm doing a roast history chicken.

Hope the fat doesn't drip and set alight to the oven again. Last time it was in-golfed in flames.

DH isn't too hungry so he's just having eggs been a dick.

SabreIsMyFave · 24/03/2024 12:03

'ingolfed' in flames! Grin

Oooh, just thought of something else. My younger brother (when he was 7-8 or so,) heard my auntie calling someone a psychopath. He reported back to my dad that auntie Lou had called the bloke across the road a 'cycle-path.' 😁

I’m a phonetics specialist and the sound ´p’ makes in the middle of a word is basically identical to the sound ´b’ makes at the start of a word. So you’re still wrong but don’t let anyone make you feel stupid over this. It’s entirely understandable why you’d hear ´rest bite’. And it’s got ´rest’ in it which is similar to the meaning of ´respite’.

Phonetics specialist? Really? Maybe go back to basics with reading Patricia Ashby and her speech sounds book or David Crystal, I think you need to do some revision.
Also you can't tell the OP is wrong in this instance, when this is what she has heard/ decoded....! Yes the word actual word is respite, but OP has heard or decoded it as restbite. You of all people as a phonics expert should understand the processes involved if you really are a phonics expert!

No, to be fair, I’m not great at spelling. I spelt it the way it sounded to me. Obviously wrong.

In all fairness to you @MummaMummaJumma I'm currently supporting an elderly carer to apply for Attendance Allowance on her husband's behalf. The Old Age Consultant Psychiatrist's report that is required to be included with the application clearly states "Mr X received a period of rest bite at XXXXX Nursing Home."
You're not the only one! 😊

When I said the OP is wrong I just mean that the word is actually respite.
I’m not sure why you feel the need to attack me or question my knowledge of phonetics? I think you’ve misunderstood my post.

Do you wash the whole family's sheets every day?

Also can you make a small roast chicken last an entire week for a family of 7 including 3 strapping 6 foot sporty sons and still have too much chicken left over

It's a very common mistake my son is disabled and does get respite ,but I see it written as rest bite all the time in disability groups etc
Another common one which in fairness could be a typo is people claiming careers allowance .
I was on a thread a while back I can't remember exactly what it was about but somebody wrote Gaud On Bennett which made me smile.

As it's Easter Weekend I'm going to try so hard to shoehorn that in somewhere - wish me luck 😂😂

I thought Pontious was an adjective to describe the man called Pilate up until I went to university, when I realized I was thinking people were pontius, rather than pretentious 😊

I’m sorry that poster tried to embarrass you but as you know it’s a doggy dog world 😁

I caught one in the wild today and thought I would share it here because it made me giggle 🙂

My boss was talking about needing to fix something because the ballbarians have gone. I told her it's ballbearings - but maybe hers are particularly savage? - and she was amazed and said she's called them ballbarians all her life and no one's ever said otherwise!

Brilliant! I love the idea of my washing machine breaking down because of the unruly ballbarians.

saraclara · 30/03/2024 16:37

The word stool seems to have disappeared from furniture language. Everywhere on Facebook marketplace, people are selling sofas with footstalls.
I thought that it just applied in the case of footstools, which I could just about hear of I said it to myself. But today someone is selling a breakfast bar with two stalls.

MummaMummaJumma · 06/04/2024 23:51

I’m restarting the thread because I have a Mumsnets related question. Now as you all know, I of all people am in no position to question anyone’s spelling. But I keep seeing ‘yooneek’ in so many threads and no one corrects (surprising for Mumsnet). Is this a Mumsnet word? I thought it was supposed to be ‘unique’ but I know there’s a back story for words like ‘naice’ - same for ‘yooneek’?

Regardless, I think it’s awesome 😎
