Thank you to the lovely poster who started a thread attempting to further embarrass me. Sadly, it was deleted. So here I am.. AMA!

How do you plan to atone for your egregious mistake?

Oooh what about a public flogging OP? Could you live stream it?

MummaMummaJumma · 23/03/2024 20:49

LiterallyOnFire · 23/03/2024 20:46

I’ve heard of this before ‘to get darked’, what does that mean?

It's a Mumsnetism for leaving your washing out in the line after dark, which some people freak out about. There's a related worry about spider willies (or something like that). I'm too much of a slattern to understand what the fuss is all about. Smile

Oh I see. Noted. I’m slowly getting to grips with the Mumsnet lingo. Took me ages to work out LTB was ‘leave that/the bastard’ (I think?)

OP posts:
LiterallyOnFire · 23/03/2024 20:52

Yes LTB is leave the bastard.

Have you come across "cocklodger" or "naice" yet?

Do you what, I actually think that’s a more suitable punishment for this type of mistake 🤣

So I’ve heard cocklodger - assumed man who’s living rent free or something similar? Not heard of naice, what’s that?

My mum has dyslexia and was horribly bullied by her own brothers for it while growing up. It's so nasty of people to embarrass you.
My mum is one of those who says pacific instead of specific but I can't / won't correct her because she knows perfectly well that she gets words wrong and is very conscious of it.

She does know about respite though as she worked with adults with learning difficulties 😊 however when I was growing up I did think it was rest bite so I imagine it's a very common mistake to make!

tracktrail · 23/03/2024 20:56

Justme10 · 23/03/2024 18:50

It should be pronounced hyper bowl and I will die on this hill Grin
I now dislike the word since I learned how it's actually pronounced!

How is it pronounced? I've always avoided using it or reading it out loud..😳

LiterallyOnFire · 23/03/2024 20:58

Naice comes from a thread more than ten years ago in which someone found an abandoned shopping list with "naice ham" listed on it. So naice is like posh or very nice indeed.

Most of these Mumsnet terms have really random back stories like that. So they can't be figured out really. Just nod along until it all starts making sense. Grin

Nice (naice) to meet you, anyway.

MummaMummaJumma · 23/03/2024 20:41

I could do plenty. Possibly put out a public apology to all those offended, or hand myself in to my local police station for questioning.

I think my best plan though is to have a laugh about it and move on 😜

i think maybe some hard labour, but make sure to take a rest bite.

FFS. Good on you for having a laugh. Imagine being coiled so tight?! These people need to unclench.

tracktrail · 23/03/2024 20:59

Everyone is 'aloud' to make mistakes, even those who went out and 'brought' a dictionary..😉

ThatFlightyTemptressAdventure · 23/03/2024 21:02

I work with someone who pronounces dandelion as Dan-Dilly-On, I love that, so much more fun than Dandy-lion.

Justme10 · 23/03/2024 21:05

@tracktrail I'm probably still getting it wrong but it's pronounced like hyper-bow-lee. Very weird in my opinion 😂

MummaMummaJumma · 23/03/2024 21:06

@FizzyStream Same as my lovely Mum. She has a heart of gold and worked in care too. Always broke my heart as a child hearing people being so cruel because she pronounced words incorrectly.

I agree it sounds a lot better. And less confusing - a plant is nothing like a lion.

I worked with an Italian lad who pronounced "notice" as "note-y-chay". Again, sounds better.

But as for you OP, are you happy with being responsible for the decline and fall of standards, all that made Britain great? Or do you feel a bit bad about it?

goingdownfighting · 23/03/2024 21:11

helpfulperson · 23/03/2024 16:33

Out of all the mispellings/misunderstood phrases I've seen it's the one that actually makes sense. A little bite of rest seems perfectly logical. I think I will start using it.

That's what I thought! I'm going to use it from now on too!

MummaMummaJumma · 23/03/2024 21:13

@Ursulla But as for you OP, are you happy with being responsible for the decline and fall of standards, all that made Britain great? Or do you feel a bit bad about it?

I’m afraid I cannot share too much about that on here. However, I’ll be going into more detail during my exclusive interview with GMB on Monday morning. Tune in 😄

Knittedfairies2 · 23/03/2024 21:15

It was perfectly obvious what you meant OP, and it's nearly always possible to understand posts if the spellings are a bit off. (I must admit that the 'wallah!' I came across some time ago took me a minute or two though)

Whataretalkingabout · 23/03/2024 21:22

It iz ze french qui say wallah! You not know?

Ursulla · 23/03/2024 21:23

Withdrawn at OP's request.

snowdrop27 · 23/03/2024 21:36

It's a really common mistake - I work in Children’s social care and have seen rest bite written so many times - don't worry op!

ohpumpkinseeds · 23/03/2024 21:46

I love the idea of a rest bite.

Sounds like a nice sit down with a Twirl and a cup of tea. Lovely.

marmaladeandpeanutbutter · 23/03/2024 21:48

My favourite error this year, a really nice one actually, was "power of eternity " instead of "power of attorney". They should rename the original 🙂

Ursulla · 23/03/2024 21:52

Yes, that's a lovely one.

Less lovely is the person who described her son's referrer as "Teacher Of The Death" (rather than "Deaf").

Justme10 · 23/03/2024 21:05

Hyperrrr-b-ly, apparently. I always thought it was hyperbowl. So much easier to say!!
I was also surprised about the pronunciation Antipodes. I always thought it was Antipoads. Apparently its Antipodees 😁
