Thank you to the lovely poster who started a thread attempting to further embarrass me. Sadly, it was deleted. So here I am.. AMA!

I think "rest-bite" is lovely.

A woman on my local Facebook group asked about "trickle treating" at Halloween. There was good natured teasing but I think everyone quite liked it (it's mostly a friendly group as long as noone's dog shits anywhere) and so she made a few more similar ones after that which I wish I could remember now..... It wasn't totally clear whether she was doing it deliberately or not, but certainly nobody was a cunt about it....

I also remember meeting a woman who talked a lot about rumours "spreading like wild flower". I only had one (drunken) conversation with her but, believing herself to be the subject of gossip, she used the phrase an unusual number of times. I liked it, slightly different resonance from wild-fire, less rapid destruction, more things gradually yet tenacious seeding and replicating themselves....

You rock on OP! Language should be explored and enjoyed, and adapted as we see fit - no one person or group of people own it. It's a form of social control in my opinion, and really quite conservative and nasty .....

Hyperrrr-b-ly, apparently. I always thought it was hyperbowl. So much easier to say!!
I was also surprised about the pronunciation Antipodes. I always thought it was Antipoads. Apparently its Antipodees 😁

Edited

They're from the ancient Greek, so the syllables are elongated. Often the stress in on the 2nd syllable.

So,

hy - PER - bol - ee

an - TIP - o - dees

I am so so so loving 'Wrestler's Night' and 'Power of Eternity' Smile Thanks again for the thread, @MummaMummaJumma.

Have you actually heard anyone pronounce it that way?

Pretty much everyone.

LuciaSoto · 23/03/2024 22:13

I actually just saw that comment on the original thread, and was thinking how gracefully you took the correction. I’ve also seen loads of people make that specific spelling mistake.

Custardslice3 · 23/03/2024 22:13

Within the context of social care there seems to be a move away from referring to respite; in our area at least we now talk about 'short breaks' - I wonder if that change was to save embarrassment for all the professionals who were spelling it incorrectly?!

I love 'spreading like wild flower' and 'wrestler's night'. They are both so apt!

Dachshund40 · 23/03/2024 22:25

@Justme10 @Dagnabit what!!! How is hyperbole pronounced??
I’ve been saying hyper-bowl my whole life!!

BrieHugger · 23/03/2024 22:27

LakeTiticaca · 23/03/2024 20:27

I remember the girl who broke the Internet by referring to the then US president as Baraco Barner 🤣🤣

The funniest thing about that - she is British!

Justme10 · 23/03/2024 22:30

@Dachshund40 hy - PER - bol - ee as another poster has said, I was still getting it wrong BlushGrin

We have been saying hyperbowl because that makes more sense 😂

HollyKnight · 23/03/2024 22:34

How do you say the letter "H" ?

MummaMummaJumma · 23/03/2024 22:37

😂😂 I saw this thread the other day. I’ve always send ‘haitch’ but of course now I say it ‘aitch’- just to be posh 💁🏼‍♀️

I could do plenty. Possibly put out a public apology to all those offended, or hand myself in to my local police station for questioning.

I think my best plan though is to have a laugh about it and move on 😜

You could put an apology poster on the lamb post outside your house?

Zyq · 23/03/2024 18:46

Am I the only one sitting here muttering "respite, rest bite" over and over and not being able to hear much of a difference? I have an Irish accent so my 't' sound is quite soft, perhaps in rp there might be more of a difference.

Pixit · 24/03/2024 01:44

BrieHugger · 23/03/2024 22:27

The funniest thing about that - she is British!

LOL God love her.

When my son was learning about the USA in junior school he wrote a fair bit about "Darak O'Darma" which makes him sound like some kind of Irish dalek.

StrawberryJellyBelly · 24/03/2024 03:00

Op, where I live P is pronounced B so
for eg Pepsi is Bebsi.

I think you should tell people you’re bilingual.

WeaselPax · 24/03/2024 03:13

Tesco staff canteens used to be called ‘The Rest-bite’ - signs on the wall and everything.

EliflurtleAndTheInfiniteMadness · 24/03/2024 03:27

Dagnabit · 23/03/2024 18:25

I thought hyperbole was pronounced hyper-bowl for years 😂

I still say it that way in my head. So many words I read before hearing them and they're still stuck in my mind with phonetic pronunciations. I mispronounce so many words.

FloofCloud · 24/03/2024 05:05

1983Louise · 23/03/2024 19:19

My favourite one is Mangetout pronounced Man Get Out, slightly off topic but it made me howl 😂

Or mangie tawt

FloofCloud · 24/03/2024 05:09

We should be able to turn these into some kind of limerick lol

When I was younger I read a whole book calling a character Percy-Phone thinking what an ugly mane lol 😝

@MummaMummaJumma - maybe you should rename yourself
Lady Persephone mondeground of Chester Draws?!

behindher · 24/03/2024 06:06

Are your children allowed to say the word toilet?

soupfiend · 24/03/2024 06:59

Ursulla · 23/03/2024 21:52

Yes, that's a lovely one.

Less lovely is the person who described her son's referrer as "Teacher Of The Death" (rather than "Deaf").

Oh that reminds me that I regularly hear people say 'toing and throwing' instead of 'toing and froing', when they are describing someone going back and forth about something

Oh lordy, dont start the respite vs short breaks argument. Thats a whole lot of different paperwork and boxes to tick on the system and if its the wrong thing you've asked for you you'll be for it!!

soupfiend · 24/03/2024 07:06

Someone might have mentioned this but also 'mind field' instead of mine field.

No, they have call it the lavatory 💩
