Do bread bins really keep bread fresh?

This is a question that has mixed responses. Some say keep the air out, others swear you should allow air to circulate around the bread.

It’s worth bearing in mind that supermarket bought loaves have added preservatives which helps keep bread fresher for longer, while homemade bread has a shorter shelf life. There have been many experiments over the years to try and create the best storage solution, but there are pros and cons to all options.

Plastic wrap and airtight containers are great at stopping bread from going mouldy, but after a few days a crusty bread will lose its “crunchiness” in this environment. Traditional bread bins are not usually air tight, and many offer built-in air vents, helping to allow excess moisture to escape from the inside, which should prolong the life of a loaf, keeping mould at bay while still preserving a crunchy crust.

Whichever storage solution you try, fresh bread will inevitably lose its freshness after a couple of days. The best thing to do with a fresh loaf? Eat it as soon as you can!

How to choose the best bread bin

Since all bread bins manage to keep bread fresh for a similar length of time, it’s really more about considering the best fit for your kitchen.

If you have plenty of worktop space, it’s worth going for a larger bread bin that you can display on a countertop, making access to your loaf really easy.

If you’re short on space, then a container that can be stored on a shelf or in a cupboard would be a better option, and maybe consider a bin that would work as a storage box for other food items when it’s not in use.

If you like to buy loaves that aren't pre-sliced, then a bread bin that comes with a lid that doubles up as a chopping or serving board is a really practical idea.

Overall it’s very much a personal choice. Consider what you need from your bread bin, eliminate the options that don’t work for you, then choose your favourite from the styles that remain. With so much choice on the market, you’re bound to find one that works for you.
