3 heat pump tumble dryers on a white marbled background

Using half the energy of a vented or condenser model, heat pump tumble dryers are the most energy-efficient choice when adding a tumble dryer to your home. Running at lower temperatures, they take a little longer to dry your clothes, but work far more efficiently. Emily Hopkins from the National Energy Foundation explains how they work: "Unlike conventional dryers that expel hot air and moisture outside, they work by recycling the air within the machine. This helps to significantly reduce energy consumption."

Due to their eco credentials, the best heat pump tumble dryers can be quite a large investment but will save you money in the long run through lower energy bills.

To help bring you the best heat pump tumble dryers for all budgets, we first tapped into the vast network of Mumsnet users (that's 8 million unique users each month), researching their tried and tested recommendations of the heat pump tumble dryers they’ve used in their own homes. Combining their views with expert recommendations, product accolades, consumer reviews and the views of consumer champion Which?, we’ve found the best heat pump tumble dryers for every household.

If you're still unsure about which type of tumble dryer is best for you, take a look at our guides to the best condenser tumble dryers and the best vented tumble dryers to help you decide.

We have a Hoover heat pump drier. Haven't tried the short cycle as I always use it on Care All (or whatever it is called). Together with the washing machine on Eco cycle + full drier cycle, it costs less than £1. So very cheap to run.

Our verdict

Mumsnetters rate this Hoover H-Dry 500 heat pump for its range of drying programmes, and energy-efficient design that has minimal effect on energy bills. Despite its mid-range price tag, it boasts several premium features, including the super handy Aquavision – a visible water tank in the transparent porthole door.

With accurate sensors and four levels of dryness to choose from - ready-to-iron, dry hanger, dry wardrobe and extra dry - you'll have complete control over your laundry routine. There are even three quick dry programmes for the days you’re in a hurry - ranging from 30 to 59 minutes.

While not all reviewers rated the anti-crease function, we love the Anti-Allergy programme which neutralises dust mites, pet hair, pollens and residual detergent. If you’re worried about your fluffy jumpers and cashmere, the Woolmark-approved cycle offers peace of mind, carefully managing the temperatures to protect the soft fibres from damage.

While perhaps a bit of a gimmick, you can also manage the health of your appliance via the downloadable Hoover hOn App, sending automatic alerts when it's time to clean the filter.

I have my heat pump tumbler in the garage. It is absolutely fantastic - drying well and economical. I actually got rid of my line this year as I dry everything in it. Get one you won't be disappointed. I got the BEKO BM3T3822W 8 kg from Currys.

Our verdict

Despite its budget-friendly price tag, this Beko BM3T3822W Heat Pump tumble dryer comes with many of the features often found on more costly appliances.

With 15 programmes to choose from, we love the Xpress short cycle that can quickly dry the school uniform ready for those manic Monday mornings, while the anti-crease function tumbles for two hours after the cycle has ended to reduce the need for ironing. With a blast of cool air when the cycle ends, you can start to unload as soon as the cycle has finished.

We love the accurate sensors that protect your fabrics and reduce energy consumption by stopping the cycle automatically once your clothes are dry. Thanks to the handy interior light, you won’t leave any rogue socks behind.

Our verdict

If you’re looking for a heat pump tumble dryer that blends seamlessly into your kitchen surroundings, the integrated Beko Pro DTIKP71131W is certainly worth considering. This budget-friendly appliance dries well, using accurate sensors to prevent overdrying and save you energy in the process.

We love the reverse action drum which prevents clothes from sticking together or balling up during the cycle, while the automatic anti-crease technology prevents unwelcome wrinkles and folds (ideal if you aren’t able to empty it straight away).

Thanks to the auto cooling feature, your clothes will be cool enough to remove as soon as the cycle ends, while the interior light means you can always clearly see what’s lurking inside. We love the LED progress indicator lights with a clear time remaining display to help you plan your day.

The downside? The 7kg drum is smaller than some other heat pump dryers. If you’re a larger household or family, you may prefer a more spacious design, especially if you’re washing duvets, towels and blankets.

Love love our Bosch Serie 6. I put almost everything in it now versus our vented one which I was scared to use for fear of ruining clothes. I usually split loads in half and find that drying time is about 2 hours. So it's not quick but I don't really find it an issue.

While it’ll set you back a little more, the Bosch Series 6 WQG24509GB comes highly recommended by Mumsnet users and has been rated an Eco Buy and Best Buy by consumer champion Which?

The large capacity 9kg drum makes this dryer a popular choice for families, helping get even overflowing baskets of washing clean, dry and back on the hangers before Monday morning. It’s also an incredibly energy efficient tumble dryer, running at lower temperatures and making a guilt-free alternative to running to and from your rotary washing line when the heavens open.

This heat pump dryer has a choice of 14 programmes, including gentle cycles for your delicates and duvets. You can use the built-in sensors that automatically stop the cycle once the clothes are dry, or opt for the convenient 40-minute quick dry feature for a quick refresh of smaller loads.

Changed my life! Super energy efficient so I don’t need to worry about the impact on energy bills. Love the mixed load programme and quick dry programme for smaller loads, while the Airwash setting is perfect for refreshing school uniforms. Some may find the ‘viral’ song at the end a little annoying, but I love jamming around my kitchen when the cycle comes to an end. You can probably turn them off but seriously, why would you?

I splashed out on a Samsung heat pump one and I've no regrets, everything is perfectly dry and nothing has ever shrunk. I spent forever checking and adding more time to my old one, it drove me mad. This does it all easily and in half the time.

Our verdict

If concern about high energy costs has stopped you from adding a tumble dryer to your home, but you’re fed up with wet clothes causing condensation, this energy-efficient Samsung heat pump is worth considering. With an impressive triple-A rating, this feature-rich Samsung appliance comes with a wide range of programmes to save time without ramping up your energy bills.

We love the Quick Dry 35 programme for rapidly drying smaller loads, while the Mixed Dry programme is ideal for everyday use, The air wash programme is a huge plus point, using heated air to sanitise and deodorise your shirts and school uniform without the need for water or detergent.

If you’re not able to empty the drum straight away, the wrinkle-prevent feature regularly rotates the drum once the cycle has finished to prevent stubborn creases from forming.

With an easy-to-use control panel, this smart appliance even remembers your family’s laundry habits and suggests your favourite cycles first. Thanks to the SmartThings app, you can even schedule the dryer from your mobile phone and be notified once the cycle has ended.

I personally love jiving around my kitchen to the songs at the end of the cycle, but be warned, you may find yourself singing it in the shower. If they get a little annoying, there is the option to turn them off in the settings.

I’ve got one - LG - and it’s great. Dry everything in there now, whereas we couldn’t do that in the old vented one we had. Took a little while to get used to (stuff coming out feeling warm, which I thought meant still damp - but once cooled down you could feel it was dry). Don’t overload it, make sure the fluff filter is emptied regularly, otherwise then it does take forever to dry.

We have an LG heat pump, and though the standard cotton programme always says 2 ½ hours when it starts, the sensors adjust as it dries and never actually takes that long - generally it’s about 90-100 minutes.

I have an AEG heat pump dryer. Came with a 5-year guarantee and was about £550. I am amazed at how well and quickly it dries a load. Everything I read told me heat pump dryers take longer but cost less in energy, mine is so much quicker than the washer/dryer combo I had before we found space for a stand-alone dryer. And it's cheap to run!

Our verdict

The AEG 7000 Heat Pump tumble dryer offers excellent value for money.

An energy-efficient choice, this feature-rich heat pump dries at lower temperatures without sacrificing results. As well as an Eco programme, the Precisedry humidity sensors automatically adjust the time and energy use based on the load size. By assessing the level of moisture remaining, the cycle stops automatically when the clothes are dry enough to iron or put away.

We love the AntiCrease technology which rotates the drum in two directions to reduce creases, while the clear LED display means you can always see how long is left on the cycle. The MixDry technology completely takes the pressure out of drying your laundry, allowing you to dry a mixture of fabrics without the risk of shrinking or damaging your favourite clothes.

What is a heat pump tumble dryer?

A heat pump tumble dryer is a more energy-efficient way to dry your clothes, running at low temperatures and recirculating the heat generated inside the drum for enhanced drying capabilities without increased running costs.

How do heat pump tumble dryers work?

Unlikely condenser and vented tumble dryers which expel warm air, heat pump tumble dryers recycle the heat generated during the cycle, pumping it back into the appliance to dry clothes more efficiently.

Moisture removed from the clothes evaporates and condenses into a water tank, which is quick and easy to empty.

Do heat pump tumble dryers need a vent?

No, unlike the traditional vented tumble dryers, heat pump tumble dryers do not need to be vented to the outside of your home.

Because of this, heat pump tumble dryers can be positioned almost anywhere in the home, including outbuildings and garages.

While not essential, you can attach a drainage hose to the waste pipe if you don’t want the manual task of emptying the water tank.

Are heat pump tumble dryers cheaper to run?

Heat pump tumble dryers may cost more initially, but they are much more energy efficient to run, costing less money in the long term by reduced running costs.

The cycles can take a little longer, but most heat pump tumble dryers have excellent energy efficiency ratings. By running at lower temperatures and recycling generated heat, they use up to 50% less energy than standard condenser models.

What’s the best heat pump tumble dryer to buy?

We think the Hoover H Dry 500 9KG NDEH9A2TCE Freestanding Heat Pump Tumble Dryer is the best heat pump tumble dryer you can buy today thanks to its affordable price point, large capacity drum, accurate sensors and range of quick dry programmes, making a great all-rounder for most families.
