Naturalmat Natural Teen Mattress review: a gamechanger for the wriggliest of sleepers

Made from all natural, organic materials, the Naturalmat Teen Mattress offers parents a healthy, breathable option for their child's first proper-sized bed. But is it worth the £740 price tag? I put it to the test with my DC over several months; here's my verdict.

How I tested the Naturalmat Teen Mattress

I have been using the Naturalmat Teen Mattress for just over four months (at the time of writing) as my eldest child’s mattress. He’s almost five years old and so, while it is labelled as a mattress for teens, it fits perfectly in his IKEA Hemnes single bed, offering plenty of room for him to grow through his childhood and well into his teenage years.

During testing, I’ve also been able to try the mattress regularly alongside by DC as we read our bedtime story, and on the rare occasion when he’s wanting some extra comfort before he goes to sleep. Previously this would have meant laying on the carpeted floor with no cushioning next to his toddler bed but these days, I’m equally as comfy as he is (and my back is thankful for it)!

How did the Naturalmat Teen Mattress arrive?

In all honesty, I was glad to find the mattress turned up like a regular old mattress used to before vacuum sealed packaging and roll-up mattresses became a thing. This makes sense, though, given the fact the mattress is handcrafted and so Naturalmat would want to avoid any damage to the mattress’ integrity during transit.

While it was large when being delivered—and required a bit of maneuvering through the house to my eldest’s bedroom—I appreciated that it was a simple remove-the-packaging-and-chuck-it-on-the-bed job.

Did the Naturalmat Teen Mattress have an initial odour?

It did have an odour after opening, but I’d expected this given it’s made from organic materials. This wasn’t a chemical smell, though. A bit mustier and something that smelt a lot more natural than other mattresses I’ve owned in the past.

How easy was it to install?

Very easy. Once I’d removed the two outer layers of protective packaging, DH helped me get it into position on my DC’s bed a few hours before bedtime to let it air a bit.

It’s common knowledge to let a new mattress air out for a few hours before placing your bedding. And while I did do this for a few hours before my DC’s bedtime after opening the packaging, I didn’t feel like I had to. Since it was delivered in its designed shape, I didn’t need to wait for it to ‘inflate’ or ‘uncurl’ like other mattresses you see nowadays.

Does it come with a mattress protector?

No, the mattress didn’t come with a mattress protector. However, I believe Naturalmat does have their own that you can purchase for an additional £80. A steep price for a protector, I’ll admit, but one that’s unsurprising given it’s made entirely of organic cotton and to the same standard as all of Naturalmat’s products.

Does it fit the same size bedsheets easily?

Yes. For years my family have used IKEA bedsheets and always find that these fit well on mattresses from different companies. Naturalmat’s Teen mattress is no exception and my DC’s bedding has stayed in place throughout testing without any need to adjust or reposition—and that’s saying something given my child can be the wriggliest thing while sleeping.

How firm is the mattress?

After opening it surprised me how firm it is. Although, given it’s crafted with an organic coir centre rather than springs, I shouldn’t have been so surprised. But to be honest, it’s perfect for my eldest. As I’ve mentioned, he can wriggle a lot during his sleep and would tend to get lost in his old toddler bed or bounce out of it. On this mattress, he’s settled a bit more and tends to stay in one place more often than not while sleeping.

While it is designed with lawyers of natural latex for ‘springiness’, I’ve found they’re not as springy as other mattresses I’ve tested. In fact, the firmness of this mattress deters any monkeys jumping on the bed, which is always appreciated with two young boys who have a tendency to bang their heads or injure themselves. Over the last four months of testing I’ve not found the firmness of the mattress to soften at all. It’s still as comfortable and firm as it was the day we received it.

How comfortable is the mattress?

I quite like a firmer mattress and so its design is great for me, personally. As a parent, I’m confident that it’s offering the right support for my growing child and I’m happy with how he’s taken to his ‘big boy bed’ since it arrived.

How well did the tester sleep on this mattress?

In his toddler bed, my eldest would always be found on the floor or upside down asleep after a long night of acrobatics in his sleep but since we’ve transitioned to a more age-appropriate bed and mattress he’s sleeping a lot better. In fact, he now doesn’t argue when it’s bedtime as he likes to curl up comfortably with a book or his Toniebox.

How breathable is the mattress?

I’d say very. Given the fact it’s handcrafted in Devon and free from harmful chemicals, its breathability has been a standout feature since opening it.

The mattress is made of layers of coconut coir in the centre and natural latex which work together to provide firmness and breathability, while the thick sheets of cotton and wool wick away moisture and regulate their temperature to ensure a great night’s sleep. I mean, I’m not the biggest mattress expert but as a parent, I’m happy to have a mattress that’s all-natural and good for my child’s health overall.

What are the stand-out features of the Naturalmat mattress?

For me, besides the fact it’s handmade, the standout feature of this mattress is how great it is for children with allergies.

My eldest, like me, tends to suffer with dust and hayfever and so this mattress has been a perfect addition to his room. The mattress’ covers are finished with something called GREENFIRST, which according to Naturalmat, is a plant-based treatment made from eucalyptus, lavender and lemon extract. This combination makes it bed-bug and dust-mite resistant.

Second to that is how firm it is, closely followed by how comfortable it is for my DC.

What is the longevity like - can you see it lasting?

Yes, absolutely. Many companies offer a guarantee but little actually lasts. With Naturalmat, however, their mattresses have a 10 year guarantee and I actually believe this. Given it’s chemical-free and made with organic materials, there’s no reason why the quality will deteriorate over time.

When 10 years pass, though, Naturalmat’s Mattress for Life initiative helps make sure yours doesn’t end up in landfill offering you the choice to recycle, refurb or donate.

How easy is it to clean?

Very! Unfortunately I’ve needed to clean it a couple of times due to nighttime accidents with DC as we transition from nappy to no-nappy during his sleep. Thankfully with a little of my natural stain remover and some elbow grease, it was easy enough to get urine stains out of the mattress. Suffice to say, it didn’t take long for me to get a mattress protector.

Is it reversible?

Yes, it is, which I really appreciate with this mattress because others in our home aren’t and I’m dreading having to replace them when the time comes. By being able to flip and reverse this Naturalmat mattress, I love knowing that we’ll get a lot more longevity out of it.

What are your favourite things about this mattress?

  • The fact it’s handmade

  • It’s all natural, organic and allergy-friendly

  • I love how firm it is (and so does DC)

  • Easy to add bedding thanks to the handy straps

  • 10 year guarantee

I’ve been very pleased with this mattress during testing and I’m now on the hunt for one of the brand’s super king mattresses for our master bedroom.

Do you think it represents good value for money?

Yes. The single Naturalmat Teen mattress has an RRP of £740, which yes, is dearer than others you’d find from Simba or even IKEA, but you’re investing in a mattress that will be with you for 10 years or possibly longer.
