Anyone else have this awful virus?

Day 3 and I'm fucked! I have never experienced a sore throat like this. It's agony.

Dr prescribed naproxen and co-codimol. Can't take the naproxen yet as it's bid and I have already taken ibruprofen.

Not slept at all for 48 hours as my throat is too painful. Had to write a note for the Dr as I couldn't talk to explain symptoms.

He said there is a particular nasty virus that is poleaxing people for up to two weeks . I can't afford to take that time off work.

What I'm really after is self help for my throat - it is AGONY and I am besides myself. If I cough it feels like layers of skin being ripped from my throat. Strangely I don't think my tonsils are affected as it's more central roof of mouth.

The most impressive nasal drop you've ever seen.

He didn't say the f word though - just rest and fluids. Pain relief etc.

Anyone want to join my pity party?

Try get some tyrozet throat lozenges - they're brilliant. Also difflam spray.

LEMtheoriginal · 10/01/2018 12:21

My poor dp went out at midnight last night to get me strepsils. Came back with exactly the same ones that weren't working Hmm I nearly cried I would have but it hurts too much.

Layers of skin being ripped off your throat when coughing is a perfect description as to how I feel too. Mine is accompanied by a blinding headache that has thankfully eased off but for the first 12 hours it was horrendous. Never experienced anything like it in my life.
Day 4 now and feeling somewhat better but sill as weak as s kitten. I've been sipping warm drinks for the throat and cocodamol for the pain.

I work in the NHS and feel so guilty taking time off knowing the pressure all staff are under but there's no way I could be there in this state. Hope you start to improve soon.

Bloomed · 10/01/2018 12:40

I second difflam!

LEMtheoriginal · 10/01/2018 12:44

Oh my god I love my Dp so much he literally has just walked in with tyro zets! Not a miracle cure but an improvement

Third day off work today. I pride myself on being really fit and healthy usually, so am REALLY pissed off that this has brought me down.
and even more cross with my 'I don't do sickdays' boss who staggered into work last week with this virus. Now a quarter of his staff team are off (and wait for the DCs to catch it next week, necessitating the taking of parental leave). Cheers, you pillock

shifts over to make room under the Blanket for everyone I worked in a house with poorly kids last Wednesday and by Friday I had a tickly cough, by Saturday it was cough cold aches and trying to sleep upright on the sofa. Which isn't going well. I checked the roof of my mouth at about 3am as it feels flayed. Got tyrozets and ibuprofen but will beg for difflam next thanks. Only thing that feels good is sipping milk. Feeling the need to apologise to the neighbours as I know cough noises go through.

harridan50 · 10/01/2018 13:06

You can get an over the counter throat spray from the chemist that will help

Ilovecrumpets · 10/01/2018 15:04

OP - Ive had this and I know what you what you mean, I’ve never ever had such a sore throat!

Only thing I can say is I am day 4 now and it has reduced to what I’d describe as just a regular sore throat.

Crossing everything the dc don’t get it!

user1471523870 · 10/01/2018 16:03

I had it too! You and the other people on the thread described it perfectly. I normally have mild sore throat for a short time and it affects my tonsils too, but this time was just an incredible painful sore throat with no other symptoms other than tiredness. I initially tried ginger sweets and liquorice pastilles, but neither were very effective.
I was in Italy at the time it was most painful and the pharmacist gave me Ibuprofen 600 mg. That took the pain away almost completely and it lasted a whole day. Not a cure, but after 4-5 days I started to see that the pain was less at the end of the 24 hours and I gradually waited more to take the next dose.
I think in the UK we can't find any Ibuprofen at more than 400mg, but that is close.
Now it's been 2 weeks since I stopped completely and it's no longer sore. Unfortunately (sorry for the TMI) I seem to produce mucus in the evening that sometimes gives me trouble sleeping, but I can see improvements....

35goingon90 · 10/01/2018 23:27

I have this too! Started yesterday and I can't swallow at all without yelping. I've barely eaten and can't sleep. Ibuprofen does help for maybe 30 mins so I try and get a load of water down me then. It's pure agony and it feels like it's in my ears too. Vile!

ElspethFlashman · 10/01/2018 23:30

:raises feeble hand:

I can't sleep, cough too bad.....I've been in bed since 9! Sad

35goingon90 · 10/01/2018 23:32

I haven't started coughing yet, I guess it's all gonna come out at some point tho. Yuck.

Leanin15yearsmaybe · 10/01/2018 23:37

I’m with you...Day 3, you describe it perfectly! I have the added joy of mucous and also Sneezing is horrendous, thought my throat had been ripped out. Kids are taking advantage of my lack of voice and tiredness Hmm

Pikmin · 11/01/2018 11:45

On night 5 I tried difflam spray and the night time capsules from day & night nurse cold & flu, and I actually stayed in bed 😱

mimiasovitch · 11/01/2018 12:26

Hello other sick people. I'm going to send sh out for tyrozets (which always make me think of my nanna) and a throat spray, and I'll try the large dose ibuprofen. The strepsils every 5 minutes clearly aren't working. I'm feeling very sorry for myself and just want to cry, aided by the fact that I feel too weak to pick up my knitting needles (yes I know I'm pathetic) and my head hurts to much to do much else. Plus I'm meant to be going to a wedding on Saturday. Yesterday it was a case of 'of course I'll be better'. Today it's more 'I'd like an oak casket'. Like I said. Pathetic.

LEMtheoriginal · 11/01/2018 12:59

Day 4 - no better Shock and now I feel sick as a parrot. I think the throat sweets are making it worse. My thoughts have turned to funeral arrangements also. I want horses......

Maybe a band, New Orleans style.

Leanin15yearsmaybe · 11/01/2018 13:24

I’m on night shifts now for next 4 nights. I want to cry 😩

LEMtheoriginal · 11/01/2018 13:47

Now I'm scared I've od'd on codeine Hmm I feel so sick. Do has it now. He's self employed and my employer won't pay sick pay as I'm on probation due to them being arseholes.

35goingon90 · 11/01/2018 13:56

Day 3 here - combo of cocodamol, ibuprofen, tyrozets and difflam are giving me a little window to eat and drink. My head feels like my brain is too big for it and I am very pathetic.

I miss food. Food is my joy. All those wasted meal opportunities!

I've not been in work since Monday, and I have w wedding to go to on Saturday. I get the feeling I won't be going, but is it better to cancel tomorrow so I'm sure I'll not be able to make it? Is there a chance that by tomorrow I'll be raring to go on an all day party with my heavy drinking workmates? Mind you, maybe alcohol will help with the painful face bones thing.

Twistofanxiety · 11/01/2018 20:42

Can I join? I also have the sore throat, agonising cough and fatigue. Also - and now I know I'm ill - I'm off chocolate. Sad
