Anyone else have this awful virus?

Day 3 and I'm fucked! I have never experienced a sore throat like this. It's agony.

Dr prescribed naproxen and co-codimol. Can't take the naproxen yet as it's bid and I have already taken ibruprofen.

Not slept at all for 48 hours as my throat is too painful. Had to write a note for the Dr as I couldn't talk to explain symptoms.

He said there is a particular nasty virus that is poleaxing people for up to two weeks . I can't afford to take that time off work.

What I'm really after is self help for my throat - it is AGONY and I am besides myself. If I cough it feels like layers of skin being ripped from my throat. Strangely I don't think my tonsils are affected as it's more central roof of mouth.

The most impressive nasal drop you've ever seen.

He didn't say the f word though - just rest and fluids. Pain relief etc.

Anyone want to join my pity party?

Can everyone eat properly?

Is this actually flu then and not a cold?

I get confused with all the different types Confused

Brighteyes27 · 17/01/2018 17:34

I am really off my food I just feel sick all the time and thought of most foods make me feel sick.

Also having plenty of weird dreams/hallucinations.

My throat is sore and tablets seem to get stuck in it.

MyGuideJools · 17/01/2018 17:35

I've still got an appetite but have just had toast and marmalade today, don't fancy much else. I'm pretty sure mine isn't flu but a bad cold (touches wood)

BulletFox · 17/01/2018 17:42

Brighteyes yes yes yes I've had the hallucinations thing!

Brighteyes27 · 17/01/2018 18:08

It’s awful just been weeping to DH have completely had enough now. The mucus is coming out out of me so fast and furiously with the antibiotics it’s making me gag and wretch and I feel like I could drown in it when I lie down, try to sleep, swallow or try to relax and ignore it. I am coughing so hard I am keeping Tena in business. My tongue and throat feel red raw and I have the most awful taste in my mouth. Only eaten a crumpet with jam on all day as DH went to work and fridge cupboards bare. DD got me some Carmex lip salve stuff today which feels nice.

BestIsWest · 17/01/2018 18:09

Horrible metallic taste is putting me off food and drink. It’s just like the morning sickness metallic taste. DH has the metallic taste too.

Plus it feels like something is compressing my chest.

I have to go in to work tomorrow.

MrsWineasaurus · 17/01/2018 18:14

Know exactly how your feeling. I have never felt so ill. I'm on day 3 too and have been off work since Monday. Really want to go back and get back into normality but I just about have the energy to do the school run and that's only because I have no one else to do it.

Hope we're all feeling better soon Thanks

Brighteyes27 · 17/01/2018 18:20

MrsWineasaurus That’s me exactly. I am doing morning school run as it’s very dark but that takes it out of me and the only time I am out of house kids early secondary school ages. I had to go to doctors this morning which is close by and wait for my prescription that was all a bit much I felt so weak. I know my breathing is bad and I am certainly not well enough to work so have taken this week off to try and get right.
I just want to shake this and be well enough to go back to work and get back to normality.

BellMcEnd · 17/01/2018 18:36

Yes, I feel sick as well although I think it’s partly hunger as well. I have to really really concentrate on not throwing up when I take the antibiotics / co codomol. I can’t even swallow water at the mo Sad.

I’m not sure what it it tbh: we all sound quite similar. Could it be this Aussie Flu? Apart from feeling weak and wobbly I’m not particularly achy - I thought that was one of the symptoms? My temp is staying above 38 despite the drugs.

Oh, woe is me!!!

Flowers for you all

Eunamechange · 17/01/2018 18:39

Don't try to swallow pills, take the DCs calpol and calprofen and adjust the dose. Adult dose of 6+ calpol is 2-4 5ml spoons which is same as 500mg - 1000mg, or 1-2 tablets.

I've had no cough until now (day 8) but now one has started, and I've just coughed up green gunk streaked with blood.

More worryingly, DS has a temp of 39.4 and a sore throat, but is classed as 'at risk'. Even colds result in A&E, O2 etc. I'm hoping that as we all had the flu jab/spray we might have some immunity which will lead to a lighter infection.

EUnamechange · 17/01/2018 18:40

Bell I assumed just a bug thing, as I've had flu before and it was even worse, but the GP seemed pretty convinced it was flu.

Brighteyes27 · 17/01/2018 18:49

EUnamechange - my GP said I have this flu virus. I have had proper flu before about 7 years ago and that was actually worse I think I couldn’t get out of bed for about 4 5 days. On Saturday my temperature was 39 plus by ear and at one stage 49 in one ear.

BellMcEnd · 17/01/2018 18:58

Euname your poor DS, I really hope he’s ok. I’m not taking tablets, noooooo way could I swallow them! The lovely dr gave me the rank amoxicillin suspension and I’ve liquid ibuprofen as well. The co codomol is a capsule which I just open and mix the contents with warm water like we do for tube fed patients. It’s still taking me ages to get them down though .

I’ve had the flu vacc too, it’s practically mandatory at work. I’m not convinced it’s the flu either as although I feel shite I don’t thing it’s a bad as the flu - I’ve never had it though so can’t compare

Mozartinmyfanjo · 17/01/2018 19:09

I had a throat bit from Christmas Day up till NY. Could not eat, drink, talk, swallow, high fever, muscle akes. It was awful. What helped was co-dydramol GP prescribed and covonia throat spray. I was fine for a week and now round 2 Sad Since Friday hacking cough, cold so bad l went through 400 tissues in a space of day and a half, fever over 39 since Monday and absolutely horrific headache. I feel so bad. Anyone has any suggestions for the cough? I have tried honey/ lemon mixture, vicks, covonia and benyline which made me vomit, steaming in the bathroom. Don’t know what else is left Sad

LEMtheoriginal · 17/01/2018 19:25

Made it to college today and had a set to with the principal - she most definitely bore the brunt of my misery. I'll say the flu had addled my mind! I still feel very ropey and coughy. People said they know folks who have been laid up for three weeks Hmm

When I try to clear my throat now I sound like a walrus trying to sing

Whatthefoxgoingon · 17/01/2018 21:18

Mozart, have you done steam inhalation with vicks dissolved into a bowl of water plus a towel over your head?

Whatthefoxgoingon · 17/01/2018 21:21

I’m absolutely sure I’ve got flu. Temp does go down for an hour or two after paracetamol but then back up to 40, I have diarrhoea, my ears are killing me, my nose is permanently streaming. I couldn’t eat when throat was really bad but now it’s better I’m getting some food down finally. GP took one look at me and pronounced flu. Awful awful flu virus.

keepmoving · 17/01/2018 22:37

Does anyone else find it too painful to yawn? Feel it stretching the back of my mouth and is so sore!

Day 7, still can't talk properly, very sore throat, exhausted although at least the headache has finally subsided and stopped with running to the loo every 10 mins. Not coughing anything up but feel like I have a mucus plug in my throat which means I feel like I'm choking when I lie down!

BulletFox · 17/01/2018 23:28

I just test drove a yawn, no.

My throat is really sore and swollen but not liquidy.

Day 7, ouch Flowers

IDismyname · 17/01/2018 23:46

I've had a variation of this since mid Dec. Lost voice, v v sore throat, then better for about 4 days over Chris, then back down with it again by 1st Jan.
Battled through it to start with, then gave up and went to bed.

Eventually made it to GP having had no sleep, couldn't lie down, couldn't swallow, and he's upped my asthma meds which has helped a lot. So those of you with asthma, maybe get yourselves to the doctor.

I found the Corvonia spray a real godsend, but also found gargling with soluble aspirin a massive help, too. Also helps with mouth ulcers. Worth adding to your arsenal of pain killers, if you can take aspirin.

WickedLazy · 18/01/2018 08:03

Me too. I haven't been well since Christmas week. It started with a sore head, awful cough, sore throat, and diarrhea. Symptoms have eased, mainly the cough, but I'm still bunged up, the streaks of blood when I blow my nose are getting bigger, and I have no energy. Still haven't done a proper crap. I feel like shit.

TheTurnOfTheScrew · 18/01/2018 08:12

I am weirdly relieved to find out that others are experiencing the same awful symptoms, although obviously I feel huge sympathy.
I had to come home from work last Thur with a fever, cough and sore throat. Dragged myself in on Fri, as I had some really critical stuff to cover. That was a mistake. All weekend in bed. I came back into work on Tues but I still feel pretty grim - sore throat, hacking cough, a bit short of breath. It's rotten.

BulletFox · 18/01/2018 09:40

Screw yes it's like having cold companionship!

Leanin15yearsmaybe · 18/01/2018 10:01

Day 10 now, can breathe totally fine but when I cough I bring up loads of mucous, no rattle in my chest though??? Still struggling with diarrhoea every time I eat, headaches and aches/tiredness. Lips are so chapped the skin is literally peeling off, nose is scabby and bleeding, mouth ulcers and I’m spotty! I’ve only had about 4 spots as an adult, usually when I’m run down but I have 6 all at once, the big under the skin painful blind spot ones. Have only washed my hair once since this illness started. I look rank
