Anyone else have this awful virus?

Day 3 and I'm fucked! I have never experienced a sore throat like this. It's agony.

Dr prescribed naproxen and co-codimol. Can't take the naproxen yet as it's bid and I have already taken ibruprofen.

Not slept at all for 48 hours as my throat is too painful. Had to write a note for the Dr as I couldn't talk to explain symptoms.

He said there is a particular nasty virus that is poleaxing people for up to two weeks . I can't afford to take that time off work.

What I'm really after is self help for my throat - it is AGONY and I am besides myself. If I cough it feels like layers of skin being ripped from my throat. Strangely I don't think my tonsils are affected as it's more central roof of mouth.

The most impressive nasal drop you've ever seen.

He didn't say the f word though - just rest and fluids. Pain relief etc.

Anyone want to join my pity party?

My dd was like this before Christmas, she seemed so much worse than just a sore throat I insisted the doctor did a throat swab. It came back showing she had severe strep a throat and needed 10 days of very strong antibiotics.

Just putting it out there as I believe strep throat is doing the rounds and can be quite serious if left untreated.

LEMtheoriginal · 14/01/2018 11:15

Has anyone felt really depressed with it? Not just down about being so unwell but just utterly hopeless?

I did Lem, more so around day 4/5 I’m on day 7 now and feel terrible still. I felt much better yesterday and made the mistake of going out, walked a bit (not far!) but just to the shops to get some essentials and ended up chatting to neighbour etc. Today I am really paying for it. My legs ache so so much and I’m just utterly exhausted. Didn’t sleep well as still coughing and I am totally fed up now.

Can’t find any medicine at all that helps. The only positive is that my throat hurts less, my voice is back and I’m less snotty and dizzy but I can hardly walk and feel so weak it’s horrid.

Thought I was better but oh how wrong I was.

35goingon90 · 14/01/2018 12:43

Day 6 here (I think). I made the mistake of going out to work yesterday morning. Oh my god I feel terrible now. Throat is sore again, snotty, headache and I feel so weak.

Bored of this now.

I've eaten one meal today but now feel really sick.

windowboxes · 14/01/2018 12:48

35goingon90 I am the same, totally up and down and just can not shake this. I am generally really healthy so it’s a total shock. Having now read up on this flu bug going around I actually think I’ve had that as it came on so fast and symptoms match. I’ve resigned myself to another few days (at least) of rest. Just need to get well again. Can’t believe how much work I will have missed!

35goingon90 · 14/01/2018 13:16

I'm getting a huge cold sore now just to add to the fun.

I really need to go to work tomorrow but it ain't gonna be easy.

So much woe!

Whatthefoxgoingon · 14/01/2018 13:52

I’ve been struck down with this too. I found a good throat spray though, literally the only way I eat. It’s called chlorasept and DH got it from boots I think. Makes the awful sore throat just about bearable. Tyrozets didn’t really work for me Sad

LEMtheoriginal · 14/01/2018 14:34

I found that the throat sweets just made things worse tbh. Thankfully my throat just feels like sandpaper now rather than like a nuclear meltdown.

The dizziness is confusing

Feeling slightly better so tried to get out of bed today - somehow got my toe twisted in the sheets, fell back and hit my head really hard on the door. Did anyone come running with a wet flannel and a cup of tea? No and I feel really sorry for myself. Posting here for a bit of sympathy.

GetTaeBed · 14/01/2018 16:54

I got it from dc1 on boxing day- really sore throat then it all settled in my chest Sad

koalab · 14/01/2018 17:04

I had this in December but I'm breastfeeding so could hardly take anything for it. Watch out for a second burst. Mine started beginning of the month, then settled down after a week, then hit again and moved to my chest by Xmas. I thought my pelvic floor had done well surviving child birth but that cough pushed it to its limits.

BestIsWest · 14/01/2018 17:23

Day 1 here. DH on day 4. Neither of us has moved from the sofa other than to get painkillers and drinks.
I’m in a new job or would stay home tomorrow. If I can stay upright long enough.

LucheroTena · 14/01/2018 18:17

Can I join you? Came down with this Thursday (terrible pain in throat, ears, headache, cough that feels like broken glass). Not hot or off food so don’t think it’s flu. Happened on my days off, went into work today and was all I could do to sit there and not cry. Just doesn’t seem to be improving. The pain! Paracetamol and ibuprofen barely touches it.

LEMtheoriginal · 14/01/2018 18:40

Just texted my line manager and said I'm not going in tomorrow. I have a days annual leave to use so I'm going to use the time to do some studying for impending exams that I was supposed to be revising for.

I do think I'm turning a corner but honestly can't believe I still feel like this

Yes, girl came into work last Tuesday and told me she had it..... then Wednesday morning I felt awful- been dosing myself up each day and mango g to get into work. I’ve had a day and a half in the last year but will be a trigger if I’m off again now 😪 feel rotten though

mimiasovitch · 14/01/2018 18:48

I thought today was a turning point for me. I washed my hair for the first time since last Monday (eww) and walked the dog! Admittedly, a much shorter walk than normal, but still. This has resulted in me sleeping the day away again. Fuck my life. Work may need to cope without me a bit longer.

BestIsWest · 14/01/2018 18:52

Thanks Lem

DDogs have gone unwalked today much to the eldest dog’s disgust. Junior dog has spent the day on his back in an armchair.

avuncularis · 15/01/2018 06:24

Twistofanxiety, I totally sympathise and I just hope you're not feeling traumatised by the head banging - knocks to our heads can be underestimated in terms of the anxiety they leave us with. Hope you got that cuppa by now! Brew

I've posted on the Aussie flu thread about my own dance with the devil, so I won't repeat it all here, but wanted to add my observation that there's a hideous virus on the loose, and whether it's technically 'flu' or not is an avoidant issue of mere semantics. Whatever it is, it's felling people, and that's no medical quiz! Wink

Day 7 today, woke up to no sore throat and can breathe again. Still productive cough and feel like I’ve been punched in the head but it’s the lethargy that is really getting to me. Any tips on getting a miracle boost of energy would be gratefully received. Can’t believe I’ve spent 7 days in bed!

LEMtheoriginal · 15/01/2018 10:44

Day 7 here too - sore throat mostly gone. Cough subsiding. Aches and pains not too bad. Able to get out of bed? Nip!!! No energy.

Had it over Christmas and am just beginning to feel right again.

LucheroTena · 15/01/2018 12:19

Day 4, GP gave me a big slug of painkiller. Last night was in terrible pain just 2 hours after maxing out (800mg ibuprofen plus 2 sudafeds) the over the counter stuff. All viral. Just want to rip me head off.

Youcanstayundermyumbrella · 15/01/2018 12:32

You poor things. DH had this over Christmas and I caught a mild version of it that made me feel quite shit for five days.

Just wanted to offer a throat solution which worked for me. Gargle with salt water. It sounds gross and please don't swallow but it makes a big difference. If that fails, and this is truly disgusting but definitely worth a shot, gargle with TCP. Again, don't swallow!

weekfour · 15/01/2018 14:12

I’ve had it. And so has DC’s 2 and 3. DC3 is only 5 months and has ended up in hospital. She’s so brave but it’s had me a gibbering wreck not being able to make her better.
