Anyone else have this awful virus?

Day 3 and I'm fucked! I have never experienced a sore throat like this. It's agony.

Dr prescribed naproxen and co-codimol. Can't take the naproxen yet as it's bid and I have already taken ibruprofen.

Not slept at all for 48 hours as my throat is too painful. Had to write a note for the Dr as I couldn't talk to explain symptoms.

He said there is a particular nasty virus that is poleaxing people for up to two weeks . I can't afford to take that time off work.

What I'm really after is self help for my throat - it is AGONY and I am besides myself. If I cough it feels like layers of skin being ripped from my throat. Strangely I don't think my tonsils are affected as it's more central roof of mouth.

The most impressive nasal drop you've ever seen.

He didn't say the f word though - just rest and fluids. Pain relief etc.

Anyone want to join my pity party?

Sympathies to all sufferers. I’ll just raise a weak and feeble hand here and croak ‘me too’ came on Sunday afternoon, dragged myself to work yesterday but that was a mistake. Unfortunately I’ve just started a new job so I’m no impressed at being off sick so soon. Whole body aches, throat and chest are agony, can barely speak or move.

Flev · 16/01/2018 21:47

Cracked lips here too

35goingon90 · 16/01/2018 22:15

Yup I've had such dry lips, keep coating them in vaseline but they crack. Horrid bug!

MaggieMay23 · 17/01/2018 09:03

Day 9. I'm starting to dry out, at last. . Cracked lips and cracked scabby bits up my nose, ugh!!
Yesterday I wondered what had hit me - sinus headaches and fuzzy head nose and ears. Lots of soup hot lemon.
Most people I know have got this bug

ClinkyMonkey · 17/01/2018 09:34

Sore throat almost gone, but oh the headache. It's like a balloon expanding in my skull and ears. Hoping that paracetamol will take the edge off and allow me to look after the children, who now have this virus too. Still struggling with energy levels and don't feel like eating. It's like karma for all that Christmas indulgence!

My sympathy to everyone who has this. It's a bastard.

Eunamechange · 17/01/2018 10:27

Went to GP this morning and he looked at me funny and said 'duh, it's flu' and signed me off. (Paraphrasing.)

I've had the jab but there are other viruses circulating which aren't covered by this year's jab. Also I've had flu before and it was even worse, so maybe the jab gave me some immunity this time.

Just found this thread it took about 8 days before the burning fires of hell feeling in my throat subsided a bit, painkillers, lozenges, throat spray the lot was used to little effect. Just as my throat pain was subsiding I broke out in clusters of mouth ulcers and also bizarrely started to get nose bleeds every time I blew my nose. My DH started with it 4 days after me.

Adarajames · 17/01/2018 10:55

Citricidal is your friend! Antibacterial, antiseptic, kills all bugs and viruses, add to hot ginger, lemon and honey to mask the otherwise bitter taste (not suitable if on any meds that day to avoid grapefruit however) add big dose vit c and zinc (body needs it to process vit c effectively) and echinacea; so far has protected me from all bugs going round, even though volunteer at homeless shelter where all sorts of germs go round. Add selenium suppliment to avoid catching things too.

Cat2014 · 17/01/2018 13:26

Ive got this. It’s horrendous. Day 4 here, worst day yet

MisstoMrs · 17/01/2018 13:32

Covonia throat spray - only thing that helped me. Had the sore grout for 2.5 weeks before I tried it. Strepsils didn’t touch it. After the covonia it was gone in 2 days.

Whatthefoxgoingon · 17/01/2018 13:38

My lips are bleeding too, mainly because I’ve been mouth breathing for four days now. Lots of nuxe lip balm helps. Thank god DH hasn’t caught it yet or I think the kids would have died of starvation by now. I can barely struggle to the bathroom and back. I feel like I’ve been hit by a truck.

Brighteyes27 · 17/01/2018 13:45

I’m on day 6 I have underlying health conditions so was given antiootics on day 4 as knew I was getting a chest infection. The blooming chills and shivering, headaches, cough, sore throat, weakness, water eyes etc has all been horrendous coupled with nearly every time I cough very hard and uncontrollably I wet myself. I feel slightly better than I did but this dry cough is something else entirely. Take care all keep on with your fluids. Also off my food which is bonus as could do with loosing a shed load of food.

Brighteyes27 · 17/01/2018 13:45

Weight not food it’s addled my brain.

35goingon90 · 17/01/2018 14:20

I thought I was getting better but had a massive headache last night, just around my left eye that woke me up and make me vomit. Feel so out of it today. No cough although my chest feels heavy. I just feel really sick. Day 8 of the grimmest bug ever.

BulletFox · 17/01/2018 14:43

Day 3 here.

I tried to go out for lunch earlier, the cafe owner happened to glance my way as I got up to go then snapped his whole body round in horror as I'd gone noticably wibbly wobbly.

I think he thought he had a fainter on his hands.

Hope work goes ok LEM and speedy recovery to everyone x

Pannalash · 17/01/2018 15:22

Really sorry that everyone’s been feeling so I’ll. Our whole family has come down with it. The aching all over has been terrible. I’ve been too weak to get out of bed for three days. I had a real scare last night as I was sitting up in bed of all of a sudden I went boiling hot felt violently sick and was overcome with a feeling of terror. My head felt all sparkly and I felt like there was a space where my chest should have been and I felt I was disappearing. I was sure I was about to collapse but I managed to lie flat and the feeling passed. Rang my GP today who said it sounded like low blood pressure due to dehydration. It’s really scared me and I wondered if anyone else has experienced this with this virus?

BulletFox · 17/01/2018 15:27

Panna I got all wobbly earlier.

Sparkly head...mine feels like my brain has overheated and when I lie down and shut my eyes I dream something which isnt true, wake up puzzled, go back to sleep it happens again and I wake up, repeat repeat repeat.

By sparkly do you mean tingly?

Whatthefoxgoingon · 17/01/2018 15:31

We all need to keep up our fluids or blood pressure will drop and we will faint. We are losing a lot of fluid through sweating, breathing through our mouths etc.

Lots of water, juices etc. everyone!

Pannalash · 17/01/2018 15:40

Bullet by sparkly I meant that even though it was dark in the bedroom my head seemed to be full of flashing lights. I was really scared I was going to conk out. Sorry to hear that you’re feeling rough too. I must admit it has left me feeling really scared that it’ll happen again. The feeling in my chest almost like there was a space where my chest should be is like nothing I have ever experienced before.

BulletFox · 17/01/2018 15:48

Oh dear, there'll be MNers conking out everywhere!

I know what you mean about flashing lights, can't quite visialise the chest thing. Hopefully someone else has had it.

You have quite a lyrical turn of phase, I like sparkly :)

Are you getting more fluids now?

Pannalash · 17/01/2018 15:55

Thanks Bullet ‘sparkly’ is the kind of word my dc would have used when they were little. Drinking plenty of fluids definitely didn’t drink enough yesterday. Hope you’re feeling better soon.

BulletFox · 17/01/2018 15:58

And you. We'll get through this!

ClinkyMonkey · 17/01/2018 16:09

Gah, thought I was doing ok. Headache not so bad as earlier. Ate a small cereal. Now nausea has kicked in. Someone just put me out of my misery!

BellMcEnd · 17/01/2018 16:10

God, I’ve got this, it’s fucking horrific. I don’t think I’ve ever felt so ill. I actually went to the walk in centre near me as can’t even swallow my own saliva . I feel like there’s a golf ball in my throat that every once in a while does this horrid spasmy thing. My tonsils are red but not manky like tonsillitis. This is further down. The lovely dr gave me amoxicillin - the rank paediatric banana suspension as there’s no way on God’s green earth I can swallow tablets, co codomol and liquid ibuprofen. My neck’s swollen, my ears hurt and I have a high temp.

I’m a HCP and I was actually seriously considering going into work and demanding IV paracetamol and a litre of Hartmanns Blush. I rarely get bugs, the last time I was off sick was in 2015 and that was a twisted ankle.

Get well soon everyone! Horrid that you’re all ill too but it’s nice to know I’m not alone.

MyGuideJools · 17/01/2018 17:10

I've succumbed to the lurgy!
I went into work yesterday (nhs) which was a mistake, just had a sore throat and muggy head. But omg by the end of the 12 hour shift I was bad, had a job to walk.
Today I've only left my bed to wee, my throat, ears and head hurt. Even my eyes hurt! I've not felt this bad in years, and I've had a flu jab.
Brew and Flowers for everyone feeling the same! it's not fun
