Anyone else have this awful virus?

Day 3 and I'm fucked! I have never experienced a sore throat like this. It's agony.

Dr prescribed naproxen and co-codimol. Can't take the naproxen yet as it's bid and I have already taken ibruprofen.

Not slept at all for 48 hours as my throat is too painful. Had to write a note for the Dr as I couldn't talk to explain symptoms.

He said there is a particular nasty virus that is poleaxing people for up to two weeks . I can't afford to take that time off work.

What I'm really after is self help for my throat - it is AGONY and I am besides myself. If I cough it feels like layers of skin being ripped from my throat. Strangely I don't think my tonsils are affected as it's more central roof of mouth.

The most impressive nasal drop you've ever seen.

He didn't say the f word though - just rest and fluids. Pain relief etc.

Anyone want to join my pity party?

From all the poorly threads on MN lately, I wonder if viruses are becoming stronger, more agressive? Hmm

Tequilamockinbird · 11/01/2018 20:49

I had this last week and it is HORRIFIC! You all have my sympathy.

I'm still not 100% but feel so much better now. I'm convinced that taking 2000mg of Vit C a day helped me. Nothing else was helping at all!

Hope you all feel better very soon.

LEMtheoriginal · 11/01/2018 20:50

Yes welcome to the club. Hopefully it will be short lived. I have truly had enough now - been in bed for two days and don't feel any better tbh. Sore throat is my absolute nemesis. The codeine is making me nauseous but if I don't take it I'm in agony still. Instead of just bad pain Hmm

Ryder that is exactly what the Dr said. Whereas they often seen waves of viruses that are in the community for a few weeks this one has been around for ages and it's making people really ill. I can't remember being this unwell for such a long time . I'm usually done within 24-48 hours and able to stay in work. This is just awful.

Dd actually cried today and asked "you Are going to get better aren't you "

We're in the club too. Started with DS who picked it up at nursery I think, it got me yesterday and now DH has it. I only went back to work last week so my boss is not super impressed but at least it's visibly obvious that I'm sick so she knows I'm not faking!

LEMtheoriginal · 11/01/2018 22:02

It's awful isn't it - I got sent home from work because I was visibly unwell. Am paranoid about taking time off as it is very much frowned upon.

Unfortunately I have not been able to go to work but feeling too ill to feel guilty or bad - so I must be dying!

Yes, vit c, Good tip tequila. Think I have some tablets somewhere, they may be best before 2007 though!

How many codeine are you taking lem?? I’ve added an upset stomach into the mix this afternoon so your nausea might not be your OD Confused

LEMtheoriginal · 12/01/2018 08:11

Taken a lot of codeine but now going without. Am hoping to get out of bed today. Not in the least because dp is now laying next to me making dying noises Hmm

I think i have got this too...not sure if it's this awful virus or Aussie flu?!

Hit me like a truck on Sunday eve after a weekend of feeling totally well, literally within an hour I was in bed with fever shivering and feeling achey. Monday was fever, achey and chesty cough and then It's just got worse....fever of 39/40 every day (despite paracetamol), really achey, exhausted, mostly in bed but sometimes feel up to getting up and wandering / watching TV / Mumsnetting now.

Throat is agony. Day 2-4 worst, now is less painful but the cough is horrendous, feels like is ripping my throat lining out every cough. Also no voice at all for 2 days Also when I sneeze...OUCH. Started with no congestion (all in chest) but now have blocked nose and mild headache too.

Feel shit, DH away for weekend so I am dreading the next 48hrs when DCs get home.

Anyone found anything that helps? Can anyone tell me how long it lasts? I feel marginally less bad today BUT my temperature is still 40!

UrsulaPandress · 12/01/2018 09:18

I'm on my 12th day. The chest rattling and popping has eased, but I still have no appetite or energy, a cough that racks my whole body, the squits which prevent me from coughing too hard. I haven't cooked this year.

Leanin15yearsmaybe · 12/01/2018 09:20

Hospitals regularly px 60mg codeine 4x a day so unless you have gone over that I personally wouldn’t worry. I’m allergic to it and can’t take Ibruprofen due to asthma so am just struggling on. Going to have some hot toddy later. Throat is less like knives this morning, fingers crossed this virus is on the way out

35goingon90 · 12/01/2018 10:22

Day 4 update - throat less painful but snot rolling out of my nose every time I move my head. Kept waking me up.

Feels like a bunged up cold now but I have no appetite at all. Ate a bit last night but then it hurt my throat loads.

I did have a shower just now tho which is progress!

Last week I had a really weird leaking, wet ear and jaw pain. Couldn't work out what it was but I think it could have been this manifesting.

Hope everyone bounces back soon!!

mummmy2017 · 12/01/2018 10:31

Try get some tyrozet throat lozenges

We get these from Boots, £4 for 2 tubes.
Wait till you try them, you CAN:T feel your throat.
We smash one into 1/4, that way they last longer.

DomesticAnarchist · 12/01/2018 10:55

Hi sick people, can I join you?

I don't have the flu because I've been to work. I'm well into the second week of this virus and I've felt worse, but today was a good day for cover and DH is away next week so I'm under the duvet hoping to finally shake it off.

I've had the worst cough and sore throat for the last week or so (fever and snot before that). If I move, I cough, if I talk, I cough. My voice is nearly gone. But I haven't really been ill enough to be off (or at least, I'm too stubborn).

I'm worried that if I don't stop and rest it'll keep on going. (I had a sore throat from March - July last year)

Cold & flu capsules with guafenesin help, and alternating with ibuprofen. I'm scared of anything stronger!

LEMtheoriginal · 12/01/2018 12:40

Well I've made it into the bath which precipitated the mother of all panic attacks. Blush poor dp had to leave his sick bed because I thought there were monsters Hmm I don't think I'll be taking codeine again for a good long time. Wtf???

Dd (19) has the flu. Hospital missed spots on her X-ray - but gp picked it up 4 days later so she's a really nasty chest infection too and anti sickness meds to combat the super strong dose of antibiotics.

I don't know if you can if you feel your innards are being trailed out through your throat but we were advised to try and gargle with fizzy drinks. The bubbles help agitate and flush out the little fecker germs lurking around your throat area.

Dd's virtually drinking ibuprofen and calpol liquids as tabs are too sore to swallow so we have worked out an equivalent adult dose of kids liquid meds. And calpol melts too.

Chin up everyone. This too will pass. Her cloud has a silver lining - the downside - dark circles, greasy hair and skin that smells of cabbage
Silver lining - looser jeans! At least till she gets the energy to get back to the fridge and biscuit cupboard.

ElspethFlashman · 12/01/2018 13:46

Last night was horrific. Up all night with youngest and I was shivering violently the whole time. I've had to ring in sick to work and spent the whole morning in bed asleep. Now I'm up, but not able for either food or (badly needed) shower yet. Am slightly dreading this weekend with two kids wanting to go for walks and other hellish sounding things.....

Pikmin · 12/01/2018 19:04

My cough and sleep has been better but symptom of the day is cold sore type development on my lip and under nose, and it feeling fizzly inside my nose too where it's raw. So I'm guessing my face is going to disintegrate next.

LEMtheoriginal · 12/01/2018 22:58

So today I felt better - until I had a major panic attack (codeine withdrawal?) And now I feel so sick .

Morning - I hope everyone is starting to feel better. My fever has gone so Yay! I still feel like there's a mariachi band standing on my chest, but I'm not about to start sobbing whilst trying to claw my skin off, which quite distressed youngest dd yesterday. I'm quite sensibly missing my work colleague's wedding today, in favour of hot drinks and cuddles with my dog. Hopefully I'll be in work on Monday. Maybe I'll give Sunday night aquarobics a miss though.

35goingon90 · 13/01/2018 15:12

Day 5 for me. Sore throat has pretty much gone but I feel weak and grim. Tried to go to work but by 12:30 I was unable to do much. Definitely not well yet but no cough either. Just a blocked nose and dizzy feeling.

DomesticAnarchist · 13/01/2018 16:05

Glad to hear (some) people are feeling better!

I'm feeling positively brilliant after my day of rest yesterday (mentally, as well as physically). I hadn't realised how awful I've been feeling (but carrying on) for the last fortnight. A day off seems to have mostly shifted the cough, so I've just got a bit of a sore throat hanging on. As long as I keep looking after myself (I had neglected this, I realised) that'll go too.

But now DH is coughing too... (but it's easier for him to take sick days, he doesn't have to sort the kids out).

So this has been about 2 weeks, all told, though I can't remember when it started because I was adamant I wasn't having it. That strategy turned out well, didn't it?!

LEMtheoriginal · 13/01/2018 18:25

Day 6 ShockHmm throat is just a bit dry but I feel sick and dizzy. Weak as a kitten but was able to do some college work today. I can't believe it's still dragging on. I NEVER have time off work but I am not sure I'll be back on Monday even.

What the hell is wrong with me?

OP posts:
ElspethFlashman · 14/01/2018 10:30

I'm definitely not going to be able to go to work tomorrow. This is the worst flu I've ever had.

Gingernaut · 14/01/2018 10:32

So far, I'm not complaining.

Zero hours contract means I'm covering sick leave for 4 people!!

I've got full time hours this week!! 🤣
