Who's signed up? I've done these every year since 2016 and I can't wait! Although my health has been poor this year I've managed to practice at home almost every day. I love the kickstart these give my year

My dd told me to stop being so calm 😆

I think I do find these yoga sessions calming. Even though I can’t do a lot of it. I like the moments of stillness. I also liked it when she says whisper ‘I am strong’ and does it herself!

AHobbyaweek · 07/01/2022 07:28

Enjoyed day 5 yesterday but already dreading today as I have had next to zero sleep with 4 month old and struggling to have the energy to lift my coffee. Will try and nap later.

mumsiedarlingrevolta · 07/01/2022 07:51

@poorbuthappy

Just did 4 and 5. Aim to be caught up by the weekend. I can't believe how painful sitting cross legged is for me. The outside of the outside foot if you get me rubs on the mat and gets very sore after literally seconds. Totally distracts me.
@poorbuthappy last time I did the 30 day challenge a million years ago it inspired me to take a yoga class. One of the things the instructor said was that if a position is uncomfortable then you make adjustments. Sit on your knees or straight legged-I have a bad knee and there are some positions that make it feel like it is going to pop out so I now just switch it up. And I'm also trying to be caught up by the weekend-currently one day behind
Sooverthemill · 07/01/2022 08:46

@poorbuthappy definitely make adjustments so you aren't in pain. Pad your outer knee or hip to raise it so pressure off your foot maybe?
@AHobbyaweek I totally get that! I've also had four hours sleep and forced myself to get on the mat this morning and I do feel better for it. I know how tough it is ( my bad nights are because my now aged 22 year old has a chronic illness and is bedbound and she's having a rough time with pain so often I just sit with her or get hot packs and chamomile tea etc). Do what you can, even getting on the mat for 5 minutes is a win!

I loved day 5 despite being very reluctant. I love love love lizard and all the pigeon poses. But does anyone in actual real life who isn't an a yoga teacher get their forearms down for lizard or even forward seated fold? No way for me!

OP posts:
UnaOfStormhold · 07/01/2022 09:05

I can eventually get my forearms down in seated forward fold on one side but not the other. I can't do it either side in lizard, though it's nice to put forearms down on a block or blanket. I think there are quite a few moves where getting into the full pose requires flexibility in several different areas (hips as well as back for example) and if you have one stiff area it's much harder. Wide legged forward fold really demonstrates this for me - I really struggle to get my legs wide and so there isn't space for me to bend forward fully, whereas someone who can open their hips more will find the forward bend much easier.

I loved day 5, always happy to do some lizard and pigeon. I wonder what day 6 has in store for our abs!

Redcrayons · 07/01/2022 09:12

I can in the seated fold, though it’s not that comfortable, but I’m nowhere near in the lizard. I can even bend my elbows a little.

I like to think it’s because I’m tall so my legs are too long Wink

Sooverthemill · 07/01/2022 09:15

@Redcrayons it's because I'm so short my arms don't reach!

OP posts:
itssquidstella · 07/01/2022 09:54

@Redcrayons same! I’m really flexible in forward folds but I can barely get one elbow to the floor in lizard. I’m 5'11" so I think I’m just too tall 😂

guinnessguzzler · 07/01/2022 10:39

Day 6 done. My poor abs! Definitely tough but still somehow went fairly quickly and a good sense of satisfaction for having got through it even though I didn't manage it all. Good luck everyone!

Gufo · 07/01/2022 10:47

Oh my goodness - I think my abs are crying Grin.

Nice to be able to do it live today. Got distracted wondering what Benji was looking at out of the window!

KipG · 07/01/2022 10:50

Joining thread late but I've been following and I'm up to day 5 - saving "6 pack abs" for an after-work treat! Really enjoying so far and I like that it's a bit more intermediate than previous challenges.

I can sometimes get onto my forearms in lizard but I can almost never get them down in seared forward fold and if it's a wide-legged one I'm miles away. This is despite years of very frequent practice! Does anyone know if this is likely due to tight hips or back? Probably both!

gubbinsy · 07/01/2022 11:54

Ouch my stomach!

itssquidstella · 07/01/2022 11:58

Those who've done day 6, does it involve a lot of lying on your back? I’m 20 weeks pregnant and not supposed to lie flat for too long anymore!

mumsiedarlingrevolta · 07/01/2022 12:33

What was I thinking???

In a mad attempt to finally catch up I did 5 & 6 today-
Admit to sagging a bit whilst threading the needle- which is a bit discouraging but will use it as a motivator...

Did enjoy them both-also like that they are all under 30 mins-when I last did it some were much longer.
This just seems more achievable...

@itssquidstella it is on back lots but you can customise to suit...

cungryhow · 07/01/2022 12:46

Feeling day 6! I guess that’s a good thing. Never feel great in puppy posture, don’t know why but it feels really awkward.

Weepingwillows12 · 07/01/2022 12:47

Yesterday I could do forearms in the seated fold and am close on lizard (one arm down other slightly up). Other times I can't. No idea why. I find the stretchy stuff ok so think maybe I am naturally flexible but I am terrible at anything needing arm strength. Haven't done day 6 yet but looking forward to it (because after today it's done and I don't need to worry anymore 😁).

This year I am finding it easier to give myself permission to make adjustments more and the breathing is coming easier. I remember struggling loads with that last year.

CeeCeeDeeBee · 07/01/2022 13:06

Day 6...ouch! I had to take a couple of short breaks, it was a toughie.

I can get to my forearms in lizard but I am hyper mobile and have always had good flexibility. It's strength that I'm lacking!

CeibaTree · 07/01/2022 13:16

I would skip this one for sure if you are pregnant, lots of abdominal crunch type moves, and not so much on your back, but lots of reclining positions too.

I was glad this was a short one, but surprisingly my abs weren't the problem, the first half of the class killed my shoulders!

guinnessguzzler · 07/01/2022 13:54

Agree with @CeibaTree, free pass for you today @itssquidstella

itssquidstella · 07/01/2022 13:56

Thanks @CeibaTree and @guinnessguzzler - I'll find a pregnancy yoga video to do instead, as I want to keep up my daily practice this month!

Snowiscold · 07/01/2022 14:20

Day 6 was one of the better ones for me. I could do virtually all of it, no doubt inelegantly, and could more or less keep up, unlike some other days. If I get to the end of the 30 days, I’m going to start off again at beginner level, as this is my first time trying yoga.

Shinyandnew2022 · 07/01/2022 14:41

Day 6 done here too !
The positives = it was short
The negatives = my abs are clearly useless as I really couldn't do lots of it at all.
Will just tell myself Adriene will be proud of me just for showing up and this is just day six of a long journey ahead !
I have pretty much done no exercise for 8 years so will try to be kind to myself..

Shinyandnew2022 · 07/01/2022 14:51

Oh also inspired by another thread about treats to get through the Jan/Feb gloom I have also decided I am going to reward myself once I get to day 30 by something lovely to wear for future yoga from Sweaty Betty !
Am open to any recommendations as it's been years since I bought new kit.

Redcrayons · 07/01/2022 16:08

Not Sweaty Betty, though I love my Power leggings.

I would recommend taking a look at the shop for merchandise for YWA 30 day merchandise. I got a lovely hoodie last year for Breath. It’s one of those print to order places based in the Uk and the quality and design are lovely. I haven’t seen a link yet, but worth a look if they do it again.

guinnessguzzler · 07/01/2022 16:24

You mean we could all be doing this in matching YWA hoodies this time next year?! I'm in! Grin
