Coworker snapped at the dress I'm wearing

I’m wearing a three-quarter length thin white crepe fabric sleeved dress with black ric rac at the bottom. It’s quite sheer, but it’s lined and I’m fine wearing it. It’s boho and vintage. I have thick black tights on with it and black ankle boots. My coworker, who works next door, came in and said, “Aren’t you cold in that”? I said, “No, I’m fine”. She said, “No you’re not”.
Well, I am! I wouldn’t have worn it if I wasn’t OK in it.
The dress is a bit like this:

What I’m really asking is why has what I’m wearing got anything to do with anyone?

Expertly designed with a split neck and tiered silhouette, the Kickoff Ecru Plus Ric Rac Dress effortlessly combines comfort and style. The short sleeves and black ric rac trim add a touch of elegance to this versatile dress, making it perfect for any...

Thing is, the OP hasn’t answered about what everyone else wears, just repeated that she’s very boho and unique and talked about her personal style. That of suggests that everyone else is pretty smart and she’s standing out.

I’ve worked places a beach dress would be fine and places it wouldn’t be. So if it’s appropriate or not really depends on what everyone else is wearing/the company policy. (Eg if it says “business casual” this dress isn’t appropriate, if it says “casual” it’s fine)

Mtlso · 04/10/2024 21:29

I worked somewhere several years ago and the employee in question was sent home for arriving at work like that. It’s not suitable for an office environment. I get you have tastes and what not but workplaces don’t care about your taste. They care about your professionalism and how seriously you take your job.

I am thinking of Bubbles in Absolutely Fabulous

She did say they are old-fashioned. So I would guess not in quirky boho beachwear.

LastNight1Dreamt1WentToManderleyAgain · 04/10/2024 21:52

I am so tired of seeing this dress described as beachwear. And continuing to browse smocks and tunics.

Iceboy80 · 04/10/2024 22:01

Ofcourse it's not a sort of dress appropriate for an office, I'd argue you a already know that.

Depends on the office. And is it polyester crepe or silk crepe or some other fabric...matte or shiny?

T1Dmama · 05/10/2024 00:03

I don’t see the issue, it’s really non of her business either!
if a man colleague commented on what a woman was wearing they’d be accused of sexual harassment these days… why does a woman feel it appropriate to comment on what her colleagues are wearing? It’s just rude unless she’s a manager and your job needs to dress in a suit!

tensmum1964 · 05/10/2024 00:39

I imagine that you probably look really beautiful and that might be her problem. I think I might be old enough to be your mother too but I.was once beautiful and I have beautiful daughters. We woken should celebrate beautiful women amongst us. It's a shame that many don't. Ignore her and keep shining your light. Infact, go out of your way to look exceptionally beautiful everyday at work. That will really piss her off 🤣

So you aren't expecting any promotions?

The dress may be promoted from bell tent to circus big top

Theextraordinaryisintheordinary · 05/10/2024 06:26

Looks pretty mainstream to me. Nothing worth commenting on. Don’t worry about it.

Theextraordinaryisintheordinary · 05/10/2024 06:27

It’s a lovely dress. The way I’ve written that doesn’t come across positively but was meant to.

Ihopeithinkiknow · 05/10/2024 06:33

Wear what you want and lol at all the posters taking the piss out of the way you describe your style because they obviously live their life depending on whatever society thinks of them, before anyone says "but it's not appropriate for the workplace" who gives a shit really" if we were all blind this world would be a less judgemental place and the real cunts would only have their personality to depend on and I reckon many posters would be lonely. Life is 2 short for this bullshit and i now kindly invite the pile on lol. I'm a 43 year old woman who doesn't even have a style because that's not for me and I don't give a shit about what I look like before anyone says "oh you are one of those like the OP" I'm not but I do have an awful habit of calling out cunts that are trying to belittle someone.

Brokeandold · 05/10/2024 06:45

Your co-worker is probably a lot older than you? Maybe a different dress size? Probably jealous, bit bitter , wants to be young again ( sorry life ain’t like that!)
bit of the ole green eyed monster!
Or she’s just miserable , likes to suck the joy out of everything!
Enjoy your style, flaunt it in fact! Life is so short.

Sugargliderwombat · 05/10/2024 06:50

What a horrible thread. The OP didn't ask if we like her dress, she clearly said 'What I’m really asking is why has what I’m wearing got anything to do with anyone?'.

It hasn't got anything to do with anyone unless they are management.

nakedscientistfreewoman · 05/10/2024 06:51

Exactly what I thought. Eventually to get on you have to look like the bosses. Unless you are Vivian Westwood.

Most of the others are old fashioned except one who looks like she's going to a nightclub each day. She wears skimpy clingy mini dresses. A male coworker once told her that her outfits are too skimpy 😱, but she's ignored him.

You mean most of the others wear traditional office clothing? 🤣🤣

That doesn't make them old fashioned

Just like you wearing your particular type of frock doesn't make you weird and woo woo

Justmeee22 · 05/10/2024 06:56

She sounds like your typical nosey, gossiping work bitch (there's always one) just ignore the old bag.

You might want to include OP in your comments as she’s been pretty judgey and rude about what the other women in her office wear.

I couldn’t give a fuck what anyone wears and I’m pretty boho myself. I don’t really appreciate OP’s double standards though.

Do people use the word frock IRL?

Thfrog · 05/10/2024 07:48

That is beach/ summer wear

And? Focus on yourself

Yea I know, that's why I didn't ask "I've only ever heard the word frock used by my Nan, what does it mean?"

Maybe your Nan and I have a lot in common? 🙂
