Coworker snapped at the dress I'm wearing

I’m wearing a three-quarter length thin white crepe fabric sleeved dress with black ric rac at the bottom. It’s quite sheer, but it’s lined and I’m fine wearing it. It’s boho and vintage. I have thick black tights on with it and black ankle boots. My coworker, who works next door, came in and said, “Aren’t you cold in that”? I said, “No, I’m fine”. She said, “No you’re not”.
Well, I am! I wouldn’t have worn it if I wasn’t OK in it.
The dress is a bit like this:

What I’m really asking is why has what I’m wearing got anything to do with anyone?

Kickoff Ecru Plus Ric Rac Dress

Expertly designed with a split neck and tiered silhouette, the Kickoff Ecru Plus Ric Rac Dress effortlessly combines comfort and style. The short sleeves and black ric rac trim add a touch of elegance to this versatile dress, making it perfect for any...

@SpidersAreShitheads this is a fair comment and I haven't read all of the comments but if they are also judging what people wear then I guess they can fuck off 2 lol. Not all spiders are shitheads btw lol I love the little fellas so send them my way

Do you not think you're being a bit dramatic? They didn't "snap". It was a fairly innocuous comment.

And honestly, it is a moderately ridiculous thing to be wearing in an office, unless you work in an art school.

Yeh it’s a bit melodramatic

The dress doesn’t look that great for an office unless a very casual place

Maybe your Nan and I have a lot in common? 🙂

I'd hope not. She's dead.

Sorry you walked into that one. I couldn't resist 😂

I’m afraid I do agree that unless it’s very much a wear what you want vibe and people take comfort very seriously with that then this isn’t really an office dress. But I will say that my previous 10 years have been spent in investments firms and then a solicitors office so I’m speaking from a place where we always had to be super presentable and quite ‘city slick’. If we’re talking about a little industrial estate style office in a little village in Yorkshire then we’re obviously on slightly different pages!

Sithee, we can do reet posh in Yorkshire too, tha knows.

Do people use the word frock IRL?

Yes.
And I've spent time Googling Mary Quant and Courtney Love last night because of this thread.
I conclude that a Mary Quant dress could be workwear, a Courtney Love frock not.
I also Googled the dresses I used to wear to work in my early 20s and now see that they were essentially club wear 🫠

It’s not suitable office wear. If you like cutesy minidresses, by all means wear them for leisure. It must ride up when you sit down.
Longer length and ensuring no cleavage, you could get away with it.

Yea ' no cleavage '. God forbid if anyone finds out women have tits!!

Dontshootthemessengers · 05/10/2024 16:38

What a bitchy, judgmental bunch!

LastNight1Dreamt1WentToManderleyAgain · 05/10/2024 17:01

So prurient! All these people bodyshaming women in the name of modesty or professionalism. And imagining types and levels of exposure. Gross. Control yourselves. I'd hate to think how you'd be if you were on a jury.

I need to know important details like fabric type and neatness and weight of seams to judge if this is workwear.

mm81736 · 05/10/2024 18:04

They are telling you it's inappropriate.

LastNight1Dreamt1WentToManderleyAgain · 05/10/2024 18:55

Maybe the colleague is negging you and wants a D/S romance

Donsyb · 05/10/2024 22:50

She sounds like my DPs mother. She’ll say to my DP or his dad “you’re cold, put a jumper on”. They haven’t said or done anything to indicate they’re cold, but she’s decided they’re cold. Then when they say they’re fine, we get “I know you better than you know yourself, you’ll be cold, put a jumper on”. Partly because she always have to fuss over them, partly because she feels the cold herself (and partly because she’s just bloody annoying 😂).

StardusttheMimikyu · 06/10/2024 02:48

I don't understand what your coworker is thinking, that dress looks nice! And anyways, I don't know how others might think but I've grown up to learn that you don't worry about others when you haven't worried about yourself yet. It's your choice to wear it, if your manager allows it, then your coworker should do nothing to stop you wearing the dress.

Really? Why start a thread inviting the opinions of other people, then?

Could it be because I've found the right opinion and I'm grateful? Jus sayin. 😉

I don't see any problem with it at all. It's really stylish and individual and if there is no dress code then perfectly acceptable. It's not a beach dress, not see-through, the neckline isn't revealing anything and I think it would look great with black tights and boots. I have more of a problem with women wearing tight leggings in the workplace, leaving nothing to the imagination.

LastNight1Dreamt1WentToManderleyAgain · 07/10/2024 13:52

I've caved and ordered an elaborate grown-up tunic for work.

AutumnalCosiness · 07/10/2024 16:00

Your being boho and folksy isn't related to the dress code for your office us it?

The question is whether your outfit appropriate really.

Not nice to snap through.

Couldn't have worded that myself any better ❤. She's old enough to be my mother.

Hah, perhaps that's it? It was morning, she's just seen her teenagers off to school with the usual admonitions about taking a jacket even if you don't want to wear it, for god's sake put some tights on, and have you got your gym kit?

Turns up at work, sees Young Person In Flimsy Attire, and mother mode kicks in. I bet it's got nothing to do with jealousy of your uniquely kooky, creatively free-spirited dress sense, and everything to do with residual parenting reflex!

I mean, nobody tells another adult they're feeling cold, do they? Kids, though - we shouldn't, but we do.

lilacmamacat · 08/10/2024 11:05

I haven't read all the replies, but my answer to the original question is the co-worker should mind their own business, and frankly, I'd be asking her what it's got to do with her. Just polietly tell her to eff off.

Silvers11 · 08/10/2024 11:09

AmeliaEarache · 03/10/2024 08:27

Not to be weird or anything but if it’s a very thin fabric could she mean that - I’m phrasing this to try to not sound like a perv - a common physical reaction to being cold was kind of visible?

And therefore she felt it a bit much for an office?

This would be my thought too! If it is a very thin fabric and even if it is lined. Nipples could be showing through it.

It is a lovely dress, but not suitable office wear!

whatareyousayingtome · 08/10/2024 11:31

It’s a nice dress but not sure I’d wear it in the office nor would I wear a white summer dress with thick black tights but that’s just me.

we have no dress code in our office but someone came in the summer in denim hot pants, attracted a lot of stares and wasn’t very professional looking but there is no dress code so what could anyone say
