Cornell University gang rape scandal

I found this horrifying. A woman was gang raped for multiple hours, drugged and terrorised by eight men. Men who invited more than 50 others to come and rape her too. 50 other men who could have stopped it but didn't. More men raped this one woman than trans athletes exist in American universities. But the latter has provoked a major outcry and has seen hundreds of millions of dollars spent to ban them. Why isn't the focus on these rapists? And the men who knew it was happening and did nothing? Also interesting to note that this is the first mention of Cornell University and its vile handling of this on Mumsnet. They had to write essays for crying out loud. www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c5wyzrm0n74ro

It’s literally all over my social media feeds so I'm
not sure why you think nobody is discussing it. They obviously are.

Huge surprise 🙄

Yep. How can a drugging and raping scandal possibly impact on her?

alwayslemons · 29/09/2026 17:53

I actually only heard about this case a couple of days ago, and have exclusively seen it discussed on social media.

Out of curiosity, I went to the websites of The Guardian, The Times, and BBC News. I checked the main headlines, then had a look at the US news page. It's possible that it's there somewhere and just buried a few pages deep, but I couldn't see it anywhere, and I was looking for it.

There are a number of threads across Mumsnet discussing high profile rape cases and rape culture, including on FWR. My search must be broken though, because it doesn’t seem to return the OP’s contributions to them.

Well, I still haven't located the thread that I'm sure the OP must have started "months ago" when the case was first mentioned.

I've looked everywhere. It's not even fallen down the back of the sofa.

Christ, that's actually quite sad.

So I’m just wondering has anyone read anything about this case. I did a deep dive this AM when at Drs (cos Christ knows I was there long enough!) it seems the statement the victim gave in 2024 was quite different to what she is alleging now. I read her first statement and thought ok when is she going to tell us about the rape, because she says she gave consent and doesn’t mention then forcing her to take drugs. Now, the important question will
be when did she withdraw consent and I think that is the hazy area. I agree her memory may be sharpening now with time but this is by far not a cut and dried
case.

I think the suggestion is that she wasn’t able to recognise what had actually happened when she was initially interviewed but that time (and possibly therapy) had given her the ability to recognise that she was in no fit state to enable her to give consent.

This is the person? Interesting.

edited to add that it would more sense that they didn’t think anything of using a young woman’s horrific rape as fodder to berate women who stand up for girls and women’s rights.

No. That was a rather bizarre claim from people desperate to discredit a woman who dares to disagree with them.

Really? I've posted in at least two in the short time I've been here. How strange. Perhaps it's the mass reporting because I dare to stand against the dogmatic approach to trans people while remaining firmly in favour of single sex spaces.

I wanted to start a post about the Cornell rapists and a chat about it I had with my adult son but I feel uneasy posting on Mumsnet currently because most threads are turning quite nasty. And I was quite pleased with the chat I had with him so I was expecting a dogpile of posters to say I’m using a horrific rape case to say how great my son/my parenting is and it’s not that at all, I just am interested in how other women (especially feminists) have raised their sons.
I for years have said that I don’t actually dislike how direct and honest posters are, mostly it’s intelligent women with no time for pussyfooting around topics their passionate about but I’d not want to spend the next few days returning to a thread which has turned into a flinging of insults and bad faith arguments. That’s the only reason I haven’t posted. I’m quite emotionally fragile at the moment with all the things happening to women the world over, I couldn’t cope starting a thread for it to be derailed into just cruelty.

There was a rape https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2009_Richmond_High_School_gang_rape that reminds me somewhat of the Cornell case and what truly devastates me is how unpunished rape is becoming. Very different rapes, but also similar, it is terrifying. But at least something was fucking done in the Richmond rape. Probably because the rapists weren’t mostly middle class white boys. I hate the injustice.
I fear for women, I fear for girls, I fear for tiny babies. The Cornell rape victim was 20. 20 year old young women are generally beautiful, vivacious, full of excitement for their future and not one of the 57 rat bastard men in that group or men who physically raped her cared about her future, who she’d become. She was nothing but “free pussy” and they didn’t care if they raped her, hurt her, they’d have not cared if they’d have killed her so long as they’d have gotten away with it. I hope every last one of those men have the experiences and lives they deserve going forward. I hope they are haunted by actions and lack of every single fucking day.

If I were a trans person I'd be bloody raging that the OP thought they could speak for me or "defend" me in such a way

I don't speak for another other than myself. Which is more than can be said for the posters on here insisting they speak for all women and girls.

I don't even know who that is. So far I've been accused of being a man, a TRA, a men's rights activists, not enough of a widow because I disagree with the term 'trans widows' and now I am 'AidaP'. Who next? Lord Lucan?

Are you someone who is sympathetic to a rape victim that you started a thread about it?

I am. Sadly others on here clearly are not. Including some questioning whether she's lying. I note you didn't criticise that post. But I suppose they share your hating trans people dogma.

I think you've misunderstood - people don't take issue with you "daring to disagree". They take issue with you baiting, attacking and detailing threads to centre yourself.

I did wonder about that. The mask was a little slippy at times.

Doesn't matter really other than it's breaking MN rules.

Wrong is wrong whether it's posted by 20 different people, 20 times by one person, in good faith or in bad faith.

The tragedy for these Genderists is that poor arguments that fail under one name won't magically become convincing ones under another. A lesson for life there I think.

I am happy to admit that I don't understand your suggestion that it's helpful to link this story to women's rights to fair competition.

It's all very Nigel Farage trying to make a point about two tier policing by linking the incident at Fairford to Daniel Thomas.

You are struggling, and not really making sense.
