Cornell University gang rape scandal

I found this horrifying. A woman was gang raped for multiple hours, drugged and terrorised by eight men. Men who invited more than 50 others to come and rape her too. 50 other men who could have stopped it but didn't. More men raped this one woman than trans athletes exist in American universities. But the latter has provoked a major outcry and has seen hundreds of millions of dollars spent to ban them. Why isn't the focus on these rapists? And the men who knew it was happening and did nothing? Also interesting to note that this is the first mention of Cornell University and its vile handling of this on Mumsnet. They had to write essays for crying out loud. www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c5wyzrm0n74ro

Very true @GreyskySexRealistsky some of the threads, especially those involving the horrific plight of the women and girls in Afghanistan leave me incapable of stringing together anything more than an expression of sympathy.

Reading in other places than the BBC link I am left wondering how the DA and authorities didn’t consider this young woman’s ability to consent. It also brings back memories of some high profile rape cases in this country involving footballers and also the case from the US where a student raped an unconscious girl and left her beside a dumpster and the Judge appeared to be more concerned about the rapists life and didn’t want this one incident to adversely impact his future - Brock Turner was sentenced to 6 months in jail and only served 3 months.

Oh, I get it, you don’t want us looking at Sandy Peggie’s tribunal live tweets.

But, posted the thread far too late even for that! Today's tribunal sessions were nearly finished by then. Nope, think OP was just bored. There's been a lot of that lately.

@alcovecupboards Are you making use of this woman's ordeal to make a point about trans issues?

This.

BrickBuilt · 29/09/2026 17:24

Why haven’t you posted about it before OP?

It’s unusual for the pro-trans lobby to take so long to tell us feminists what we should be thinking and why we are wrong tbh

I must have missed that, but I wouldn't be surprised if it were true. Their aim clearly is not to win hearts and minds over to their cause.

If I were a trans person I'd be bloody raging that the OP thought they could speak for me or "defend" me in such a way

Picoloangel · 29/09/2026 17:27

Well this has taken a turn. A turn away from the woman.

So to clarify - OP is scolding women here for not starting threads about a horrific story that is months old. She hadn’t started any threads about it either, but that’s ok. For some reason.

She further scolds women for threads where they discuss horrific stories and include comparisons to trans issues. While starting a thread doing just that, again apparently if she does the same that’s ok.

Finally she expects MN to be quicker than the BBC at posting horrific stories from other parts of the world. While not being able to poster any earlier herself - again that’s ok apparently.

Fair summary?

Yes, just one big scold. And then disappeared, no doubt to reappear later with some completely believable story about "the children" or "the job" or simply "you're all just beyond reasoning with and I had better things to do." As if we haven't seen it hundreds of times before.

RobinEllacotStrike · 29/09/2026 17:29

Using this violent sickening attack on a woman to bleat on about trans identified men is truly a new low.

fridaynightzzz · 29/09/2026 17:31

Woman was gang raped so it’s fine to allow men to cheat in women’s sport. What has one got to do with the other?

ThatGoldScroller · 29/09/2026 17:32

What about the other rapes you have not posted about OP, do you not care about the less public suffering women have endured?

DrBlackbird · 29/09/2026 17:33

Myalternate · 29/09/2026 16:30

What the fuck has Elliot Page got to do with this? Let’s discuss the brutality this young woman was subjected to and the consequences the perpetrators faced.

Agree.

Plus, wtf does gender ideology have to do with this horrific case? Utterly bizarre to attempt to link the case to not being mentioned before on "Feminism: Sex and Gender Discussions". Remonstrate with Feminism: chat by all means, but here? That’s just plain nuts.

However, I also note that BBC has no earlier linked articles on that page, which they do when they’ve reported before on the matter. Ergo, this is the first time it’s been reported by them.

Now, I will say that it’s appalling and that university’s, US and UK, are dreadful in responding to sexual assaults of young women on campus. The fact that anal tears are/were the most common reason for young American women to seek medical care on US campuses tells us about how young university men think about women.

Cornell University said that while it supported the case being brought before a grand jury, "any suggestion that the university did not impose consequential punishments for those involved is false".

WTF were ‘consequential punishments’ that didn’t involve a custodial sentence? That these men were not subjected to a police investigation is appalling. But then women there and here are treated abysmally by men. Including on campuses, so being hesitant to pursue the case is completely understandable.

Well this has taken a turn. A turn away from the woman.

This thread was started by the OP purely to tell the posters of this forum off. It was not started to discuss the case in the BBC article.

Here is the thread to discuss the case: https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/_chat/5583293-cornell

So I’m just wondering has anyone read anything about this case. I did a deep dive this AM when at Drs (cos Christ knows I was there long enough!) it seems the statement the victim gave in 2024 was quite different to what she is alleging now. I read her first statement and thought ok when is she going to tell us about the rape, because she says she gave consent and doesn’t mention then forcing her to take drugs. Now, the important question will
be when did she withdraw consent and I think that is the hazy area. I agree her memory may be sharpening now with time but this is by far not a cut and dried
case.

Picoloangel · 29/09/2026 17:27

Well this has taken a turn. A turn away from the woman.

Huge surprise 🙄

NumberTheory · 29/09/2026 17:43

There was also the gang rape of a 17 year old girls in India last week. The gang rape of another 17 year old in Sydney in August. The gang rape of a 20 year old in Lahore last week. The Scottish Police officer who attacked at least 14 women. The Iranian nurses gang raped by security services for treating protestors. Martin Hall's rapes of two children which he was only sentenced for last week despite being arrested on the day of the rapes over % years ago.

I could go on. The fact is, rape is common. Avoiding taking complaints seriously and holding men to account by authorities is common. The Cornell case is horrific, but it's almost a cliche that frats get away with that sort of thing in the US. Being a British forum we have been more focused on the grooming gangs in the UK.

Many of us have experienced rape and many of us are involved in organizations that support women when they've gone through this or work on policy to try and turn rape culture around and protect women. But we haven't had to use MN as a meeting point to discuss that because we weren't systematically closed out of policy discussion on other forums the way we were with women's rights to classify ourselves and fight for policy on the basis of our sex. The organizations women set up to support each other didn't entirely turn their back on the issue. (Though there have been some worrying silencing of discussions of Male VAWG in recent years piggy backing off the silencing of women who raised sex based concerns about trans women. Along with a, now seemingly waning, push in some women's organizations to feel bad for men being jailed for rape).

No no, the next post will be accusing us all of being bullies.

alcovecupboards · 29/09/2026 16:03

Not at all. I'm pointing out that the posters here don't care at all about it compared to trans issues. It's staggering frankly.

It's "staggering" that British women aren't keeping on top of the US news page on the BBC website? Really?

Are British women supposed to be constantly fawning over American news like it's the most important thing on the planet?

The article was posted yesterday but you've only just shared it. Why weren't you doing more yesterday? Why don't you care? Why didn't you find out before now? Is it because you care more about trashing women on MN than about ending male violence against women?

FRANKLY, it appears that you personally have only just discovered this awful incident. And your first response has been to (a) use it to score political points, and (b) bash some women who won't behave and think like you want them to.

Accusing women in another country of not caring about an incident they knew nothing about is, FRANKLY, ludicrous.

Will the women here be appalled about this? Yes. Obviously.

Are we evil harridans for not knowing about it and not hanging off every word about goings-on in the US? No.

Instead of living on the internet and being overly concerned with the news updates about another country, British women have been doing our jobs, cleaning our homes, spending time with our families, sleeping, enjoying our hobbies, exercising and getting some fresh air.

I suggest you do the same.

Yes I was thinking about Brock Turner as well in relation to this case.

Does that argument hold any truck any more, about rape allegations ruining lives I mean, given the president of the US doesn't seem to have been much affected?

faithfultoGeorgeMichael · 29/09/2026 17:50

Stop using a gang rape victim to attack women who are defending their rights.

@NumberTheory thank you so much for your excellent post 👏👏
