Cornell University gang rape scandal

I found this horrifying. A woman was gang raped for multiple hours, drugged and terrorised by eight men. Men who invited more than 50 others to come and rape her too. 50 other men who could have stopped it but didn't. More men raped this one woman than trans athletes exist in American universities. But the latter has provoked a major outcry and has seen hundreds of millions of dollars spent to ban them. Why isn't the focus on these rapists? And the men who knew it was happening and did nothing? Also interesting to note that this is the first mention of Cornell University and its vile handling of this on Mumsnet. They had to write essays for crying out loud. www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c5wyzrm0n74ro

Accusing women of not caring about rape will do that.

Now I think about it, how many times have you posted here to highlight and raise action against the global rape of women vs how many times have you posted here defending Genderist men.

By your own logic I accuse you of not caring enough about rape. Shameful indeed.

You’re not being attacked. You are the shameful one here because you’ve no interest in the topic you posted about, you just wanted a reason to further your hateful agenda towards women that disagree men can be women.

nutmeg7 · 29/09/2026 16:48

alcovecupboards · 29/09/2026 16:04

You haven't bothered to even mention it - other than as an attack on me. That's how I know.

I believe you started the thread to have a go at posters on this forum rather than the other way around. It’s in the original post - some weird reference to trans identified men in female sports.
What has that got to do with this appalling case from the US?

iwishitwouldstartraining · 29/09/2026 16:50

Is the logic that because women are the victims of rape, they shouldn't also have rights?

I'm really not following the argument.

nutmeg7 · 29/09/2026 16:51

alcovecupboards · 29/09/2026 16:15

Why? The issue here is that all these posters who claim to care about women's rights - care far more about attacking trans people than they do about women being gang raped. And rapists getting away with it. That's the issue.

So this thread wasn’t started to discuss this case from America, it was started in order to use a gang rape case to make attacks on women here.

Never seen anything done in quite such bad faith.

CassOle · 29/09/2026 16:52

alcovecupboards · 29/09/2026 16:32

You're posting on mumsnet. But sure, you have no spare time.

Obviously, I have some time now, or I wouldn't have been able to see your thread.

mysticbob · 29/09/2026 16:18

YANBU to raise this awful story on here OP. And I think that the point about the minuscule number of trans athletes does add important context. You can’t move on this board for people savaging trans people for existing, but when a genuinely horrific crime against a woman is reported worldwide - crickets. You’ll be called thick and a handmaiden and all sorts though.

There has been very little coverage in the UK.

It is, however, being discussed on twitter and other platforms today, which I suspect is what drew it to the attention of the OP.

I'm not sure what you want the focus of discussion to be.

It highlights male violence against women, (and why some women feel that they need single sex spaces).

Imdunfer · 29/09/2026 16:58

alcovecupboards · 29/09/2026 15:59

It isn't one or the other - but no-one here has even bothered to mention this huge scandal - but you can't move for threads on trans people.

And you've just started another!

MrsTerryPratchett · 29/09/2026 16:28

Why am I bothering? Playing chess with pigeons.

The OP is using this horrific story as a distraction from other threads. I don’t believe there is a genuine concern for the young woman involved. It’s just an excuse to screech at and scold women who won’t conform to their world view.

Arran2024 · 29/09/2026 17:01

It is a fast moving story with a lot of accusations and counter accusations and denials. I would be wary posting anything about it atm til the dust settles and we understand more.

nutmeg7 · 29/09/2026 17:01

alcovecupboards · 29/09/2026 16:26

I've posted the search results showing no other posts or threads. But do keep your gaslighting up.

Not sure you understand what gaslighting means.

Mapletree1985 · 29/09/2026 17:03

Posting how angry I feel about a crime which happened a while ago, in a country that is not my own, over which I have zero influence, and which isn't even a surprising crime because we all know already exactly what men are capable of, is the very definition of futile performative outrage.

What am I going to achieve? Shut down Cornell? Cancel men?

The campaign to keep trans-identified men out of women's spaces, on the other hand, has the potential to bring about real change.

Don't make the mistake of assuming that because people don't post about something, they don't care about it either.

Diamondsgreen · 29/09/2026 17:04

I saw the meme that inspired your post too OP. It's nonsense.

For me the argument against men in women's sport is about equity and fair competition, not becuase I think those men are a risk to female athletes (although some may well be).

The two issues are just not related, except in the way men manipulate a situation to harm or disadvantage women for their own enjoyment and advantage.

Ah so it’s not even an original thought from the OP?

utterly shameful that you needed a FB meme in order to think about bringing attention to hhis young woman’s story.

And MNHQ, in their infinite wisdom, has allowed this thread to stand...

On the one hand, good. What the OP has posted will be shown, along with the reasoning and arguments of most of the rest of the posters, and intelligent people will draw their own conclusions as to the thread's "original purpose."

On the other hand, really, MNHQ? Is this really how low discourse has now sunk, that clicks and advertisers mean more than someone using a horrific rape as an excuse to wedge a "trans women are women" slimy faux-argument onto FWR?

GreyskySexRealistsky · 29/09/2026 17:09

Just pointing out - to no one in particular - that sometimes people don't post on a topic because it would be too triggering for them to engage on that topic.

It doesn't mean they don't care.
It means they don't want to revisit or relive a whole host of emotions that would be overwhelmingly traumatic for them.

Worth bearing in mind.

CassOle · 29/09/2026 17:13

Why do I feel that even if I posted a minute-by-minute account of my time, that finding any time at all to post on MN is evidence of my bad-doing? Despite the fact that the OP has time to post on MN too.

titchy · 29/09/2026 17:14

So to clarify - OP is scolding women here for not starting threads about a horrific story that is months old. She hadn’t started any threads about it either, but that’s ok. For some reason.

She further scolds women for threads where they discuss horrific stories and include comparisons to trans issues. While starting a thread doing just that, again apparently if she does the same that’s ok.

Finally she expects MN to be quicker than the BBC at posting horrific stories from other parts of the world. While not being able to poster any earlier herself - again that’s ok apparently.

Fair summary?

This news story, distressing as it is, is really only on social media, not on the big news outlets. Even the guardian has Andy Burnhams speech and the Man City financial story front and centre, rather than the Cornell story. I think it’s because it’s a US story and on social media, so it’s hard to get the veracity of it on first read.

Quick work though @alcovecupboards getting on here to bollock everyone for not reacting as quickly as you! Bravo! You win most virtuous person of the week!

It was updated 44 minutes ago. It has been live for 21 hours. It is a story that has been reported for months. But you're all too busy pretending that Sandie Pegg is more important than stuff like this.

Oh, I get it, you don’t want us looking at Sandy Peggie’s tribunal live tweets.

Arran2024 · 29/09/2026 17:19

I tell you what else there isn't a thread on - the NYT executive who was gunned down, allegedly by his parents-in-law, who allegedly took it in turn to shoot him. He was allegedly accused of domestic violence involving their daughter ie his wife and their children. Oh but then it turns out "he" is a trans man.

But it's another country, another shocking case, another case of a trans offender. We can't keep up with all the interesting stories from around the world.

You didn't search very hard, this thread was started yesterday.

Unfairness in women's sports isn't remotely comparable to gang rape. But since you are in fact comparing them, here's a handy website keeping track of things: https://hecheated.org

When a man competes in a women's competition, he's not just taking one woman's place. every single woman who comes after him has been bumped down a place, and one woman will be denied the chance to compete at all.

However there is one parallel I think you've missed. In both cases, we see clear evidence of men's feelings being valued over women's rights. So I guess there is a comparison to be drawn after all, just not the one you thought.

How dare you hijack such an abominable crime to try and turn it into a pity party for trans people. What a grotesque thing to do.
