Cornell University gang rape scandal

I found this horrifying. A woman was gang raped for multiple hours, drugged and terrorised by eight men. Men who invited more than 50 others to come and rape her too. 50 other men who could have stopped it but didn't. More men raped this one woman than trans athletes exist in American universities. But the latter has provoked a major outcry and has seen hundreds of millions of dollars spent to ban them. Why isn't the focus on these rapists? And the men who knew it was happening and did nothing? Also interesting to note that this is the first mention of Cornell University and its vile handling of this on Mumsnet. They had to write essays for crying out loud. www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c5wyzrm0n74ro

You said no one mentioned it. You said there was a search function. You didn't start a good faith thread yourself.

Don't pretend. You don't give a shit about that woman.

I've posted the search results showing no other posts or threads. But do keep your gaslighting up.

I mentioned it. Just this morning. I can find the post but you don't give a shit.

But you didn't think it worthy of a thread of its own? The only people who should be ashamed of themselves are those who ignore this because they're too busy attacking innocent trans people. They don't care about women's rights - they just want to be hateful.

You need to have a lie down before you do yourself an injury.

Dont get all fucking preachy just because this is the first most of us have heard about this case! Have you missed the threads about Gisele Pelicot and other similar sexual exploitation on FWR? Or does that not suit your agenda?

BirdLandedonmyHead · 29/09/2026 16:27

A 20yo student was raped, now her story is being used as a political powerplay.

Fantastic support for women there by a certain demographic.

Ive been following the story for a few days. Its horrific. Men did it. Men knew about iy as it happened. Then men ans women tried to cover it up.
Now men are defending it. And other men and women are using it for their own means.

MrsTerryPratchett · 29/09/2026 16:28

Why am I bothering? Playing chess with pigeons.

alcovecupboards · 29/09/2026 16:03

Not at all. I'm pointing out that the posters here don't care at all about it compared to trans issues. It's staggering frankly.

If you want to argue that this horrendous rape was a good thing I am sure you'd very quickly have a 40 page thread of angry women disagreeing very strongly.

SnowflakeSmasher86 · 29/09/2026 16:28

This is a feminist board - we already know how we all feel about rape and specifically gang rape of a drugged young woman. Posting about it here wouldn’t exactly bring anything new to the discussion. There is a problem with men. We all know this. We aren’t the cause or the solution. This is a men’s problem that they need to fix asap. Feminists can’t help young men to see that raping or standing by while their friends rape is unacceptable. What do you want us to say?

If there were for example, a huge cohort of people pushing for the inclusion of male people into women’s spaces we might have something to say about that, precisely because we KNOW shit like Cornell happens all the fucking time. Yes it’s horrific, yes it’s newsworthy, but as a piece of relevant feminist reality it is one in a million rapes that happen all day every day

Starting a thread to say “that poor young woman, what an absolutely horrific ordeal to go through at the hands of someone she thought was her friend”, what responses could anyone possibly give that aren’t just trite platitudes? What do you want a thread about to say? How would that help anyone?

Whereas keeping males out of female spaces is instrumental in trying to prevent exactly this type of violence.

What the fuck has Elliot Page got to do with this? Let’s discuss the brutality this young woman was subjected to and the consequences the perpetrators faced.

FancyLilacHare · 29/09/2026 16:30

I agree this is horrifying.

I literally had not heard of it until this thread.

Are you American by any chance?

Maybe that's why you think it's been posted on for months, perhaps it has in the American media but I don't think it has here because surely some of us would have come across it?

I don't think there's any doubt that if people had known about it, it would have appeared on a mumsnet thread before now.

If you are using this horrifying case to attack women for not accepting that men are women if they say they are, that is disgusting.

Being in the UK and having had no spare time to access news sites or watch news on TV, this is the first time I have read of this horrific story.

I am utterly horrified that this poor lady's ordeal has been used by the OP to make a political point.

You're posting on mumsnet. But sure, you have no spare time.

What an absolutely bizarre thread which seems to be entirely based on the premise that no one is capable of being concerned by more than one thing and thus we have to pick which is most serious.

I don’t think it’s quite the ‘gotcha!’ you think it is, OP, but it does tell us an awful lot about YOUR capacity for critical thinking 🤔

There are posts on this in AIBU and Chat.

Your search function isn't working. Maybe switch it off and on again?

Zimunya · 29/09/2026 16:33

OP, you are conflating two very separate issues here - and one has nothing to do the other. I do care very much about this Jane Doe, and the lack of apparent consequences for the men involved. But, very sadly, I also think that in a country where the president has been convicted of rape, and the Defence Secretary has been accused of rape, yet no consequences have accrued to them, there is very very little will or impetus for rapists to change. If it makes you feel any better, I, and many of the women I know, have e-mailed and called the adminstration at Cornell. I've also e-mailed Wells Fargo where one of the rapists works. Just because it isn't on Mumsnet, doesn't mean it didn't happen.

No we all flocked to a thread about the event in the title. Proving that we do give a shit about it surely?

It was updated 44 minutes ago. It has been live for 21 hours. It is a story that has been reported for months. But you're all too busy pretending that Sandie Pegg is more important than stuff like this.

All the men involved in that attack are abhorrent and I hope their futures are impacted every bit as much as the victims is.

And you are disgusting using this woman’s trauma as a way of having a go at mumsnet posters.

Diamondsgreen · 29/09/2026 16:35

I have been seeing this pop up on SM for a few days, but TBH didn't really expect it to feature on MN because it wasn't a UK story and because it hadn't been in the UK media until today - I checked because I wanted to fact check the SM content.

Before that, I really don't think it has been reported on "for months" in UK.

It's an awful story and the way in which the 50 men did nothing is definitely worthy of discussion, in view of the fact there have been similar, if not quite as disturbing group chats reported here, but you were never going to get that from the way you started your thread OP.

Pallisers · 29/09/2026 16:38

There is something incredibly distasteful - not even a strong enough word - to have someone take an absolute horror that happened to another woman and make it all about "and all you meanies to trans people are horrible". You should be ashamed of yourself OP.

This story really only broke in the US yesterday (I am in the US and it is only being reported widely here now) and yet you expect a bunch of mostly british women to be on top of it and condemn it so they can then argue about men in women's sports. What the fuck are you on? Do you think this forum needs a worldwide rape review function before we can comment on anything else. News for you honey - it would be a full time job for us.

The common factor in this horrible alleged rape and the furor of men in women's sports is that women's voices are ignored.

Shame on you OP.

FlirtsWithRhinos · 29/09/2026 16:38

Every day, all over the world, women are being raped, brutalised and murdered.

The reason Genderism makes women so fucking angry is it seeks to overwrite an understanding of what being female is in the world with some trite shit about "bodies don't define us" and "who are you to tell soneone who they are, I think.they know better than you!"

And we need an understanding of what being female is in the world to talk about rapes, and who rapes who, and how and why society can enable rape even while pretending to be aghast and shocked.

Now, what I want to understand from OP is why this rape? It's hardly the first ever rape. Why aren't you here posting about rapes 24/7?

This certainly demonstrates, again, why women are wary of men.

More men raped this one woman than trans athletes exist in American universities.

Did you copy this from twitter/bluesky? I would assume that that there are many more than eight trans identifying athletes in American universities - or are you using 'trans' to refer only to male athletes who want to compete as women?

I''m not following your logic - are you really trying to argue that because some men raped some women, some other men should be able to compete as women?

Or are you just expecting posters on this site to be particularly outraged at something that happened in America? Has this received much coverage in the UK? It's on the US news page of the BBC website, but not the news homepage.

if your question is about relative levels of outrage in America, you might be better off on a US based website.

Don’t be silly. You don’t know what people think.

You’re using this story to make some weirdly tangential and unfounded accusations about people who
post on this forum.
