Women: from an orderly queue at the bar or take a seat and grab a passing gerbil.

Men: turn left at the end of the road, keep walking until you find the Staunch Ally.

Bar gerbil a full fat coke please and a packet of Scampi Fries please.

Welcome to the Bluestocking women's pub. Men are directed to the Staunch Ally just down the road. Otherwise all are welcome. Pull up a chair, give you...

From my earlier post:
How many second chances do you give to the unreliable so-and-sos?

From Pedants' Corner:
You can only give them one second chance. Any other chance would be first, third, fourth and so on..
😁

ifIwerenotanandroid · 09/04/2026 18:09

My favourite post today was on a thread where the OP said her husband's fantasy is that she's having s!x with someone else, & he's insistent that she WILL do it one day.

Answering post: Tell him he’s right, you probably will end up doing it one day - after you have divorced him for being a massive twat.

😂

Yes, I saw that one Android, and thought exactly the same thing!

There are some very witty women on MN. I loved Marie's 180 comment on the darts thread - 😂😂😂

Merlin is brilliant. Sometimes it mistakes things, but in general is vv accurate - so far as I can tell, anyway. Now and then it tells me it's heard a redwing or something, and I replay and think, Nah, that was me and the garden tools.

It doesn't ID our semi-feral local peacocks, or the nest of baby birds already shouting their heads off in next door's garden, but it picks up goldfinches and chaffinches and kestrels and so on.

And bloody autocarrot, yes, I meant kestrels plural, and nest not best, and redwing and not redoing.

I have thus far tricked Merlin into believing I'm a tawny owl and a collared dove.

Skills! 😂

I was listening to a podcast the other day where one of the hosts had been out with a birder and said at the end of the day, 'Mate, you missed one - my Merlin picked up a tawny owl!'

And the birder was astounded that he'd missed it... until the host fessed up.

I love the badger square, @lcakethereforeIam - I don’t have the nerve to try plotting my own designs, but I do have this book - Doodle Knits - one of these days I’ll use this to do a patchwork of different design squares.

I've a nascent plan to do a patchwork cardie for me or younger sprog. It'll be a while before I start, if I do. Currently keeping a eye out for a pattern. All the ones I've seen have got really baggy sleeves.

I’ve got a screenshot of his Bluesky post to deploy as required.

Have you tried stitch fiddle? It’s ace. You can upload a picture and it converts it to a crochet or knitting pattern and suggests which wool colours will match.

EdithStourton · 10/04/2026 09:20

Chilly here today. I have a lot of inside jobs to do (on hold due to gardening while it was warm).

I put some seed down for Waddling Woodie, who is so large it's a wonder he can get airborne, but the nesting sparrows seem to have got there first.

Which reminds that I need to net my peas before they show, or WW is likely to snaffle the lot.

And <jumps up> I have dozens of seedlings that are in the middle of being hardened off and must go outside NOW!

AuntieMsDamsonCrumble · 10/04/2026 09:48

Morning all.

@Wearenotborg Hello, <waves> not sure if you are new or name changed but welcome anyway.

Gerbils, I'd like a large hot chocolate and a croissant please. I've been gardening all week and need the energy (and a new back).

I'm singing at a wedding this morning so I've been doing some vocal exercises, much to the bemusement of next doors cat🎶

I am not convinced that the very persistent poster on that thread is human, or at least wholly human. The repetition, speed of response, mirroring.

Which may explain their failure to understand measurable physical differences and the effects of that. I am restricting the searchable words I'm using. And will not be feeding it further.

How does that work, @EdithStourton?

Somene gave Kitty catnip seeds for her birthday so I’ve been growing them by a sunny window (covered by a drainer to protect them from too close inspection!)

I thought I’d buy some potting compost this weekend & move them into small pots but that it was probably a bit soon to put them out. What’s hardening off & should I be doing it?

The annoying kid?

DeanElderberry · 10/04/2026 10:07

I think I have missed the kid. Someone denying reality. I realise that doesn't narrow the field much. Also that there are indeed some actual humans who would fight with a feather and have no interest in truth, just in 'capping' what others have said.

The trouble with the Bluestocking is it tricks one into imagining that all ones fellow posters are intelligent rational adults.
