Women: from an orderly queue at the bar or take a seat and grab a passing gerbil.

Men: turn left at the end of the road, keep walking until you find the Staunch Ally.

Bar gerbil a full fat coke please and a packet of Scampi Fries please.

Welcome to the Bluestocking women's pub. Men are directed to the Staunch Ally just down the road. Otherwise all are welcome. Pull up a chair, give you...

This is the crocheted blanket I made DD that she took to uni. Each of them have one, because my gran crochet my brother and I blankets and they went with me everywhere.

I'm a slow and inexpert crocheter, but I am a dreadful knitter.

I'm with @Boiledbeetle on this. I have read and re-read the posts by @EmpressaurusKittyand @ifIwerenotanandroid and my brain refuses to understand them. Next time I feel inspired, I will put on some YouTube videos and try to make sense of things.

I really need someone to sit with me and show me but I don't like going to group things. I get all shy and nervous (which you would never believe if you knew me IRL).

I CAN'T DO IT.

The relatives in the Balkans used to do beautiful crochet work.

Somewhere, I have a crocheted cup and saucer, stiffened with starch made of melted sugar.

I CAN'T DO IT.

Do the chain 4 and connect the ends. I always do it that way. I did manage a magic ring a few times but it's really not necessary!

My mother tried SO many times to teach me how to crochet (and sew and use a sewing machine) and I just couldn't get my hands coordinated enough to do it.

At least I'm consistent in my inability.

I don't know what that means

I tried learning to crochet from a magazine, then a book & finally went to a course at a yarn shop where I finally learned & have been doing it fanatically ever since - so be careful what you wish for.

Boily, you must be really good with your hands in other ways (construction etc).

Magpiecomplex · 02/04/2026 19:51

ifIwerenotanandroid · 02/04/2026 18:29

Boily (& anyone else struggling with crochet), my crochet teacher made us start with chunky yarn (Hayfield Bonus Chunky in a pale colour) & 6.5mm hooks. It's much easier to see what you're doing, although yellow will be fine for that.

You'll also find life easier if you have a very thin hook (e.g. 2.5mm) as well, because you'll need to put a hook into a chain or the top of a stitch at some point, & this can be tricky & is much easier with a thin hook which can then pull the yarn back through for you to tranfer onto the normal hook.

If you're trying to do a magic ring from text, it's v. difficult to describe it/read & understand it (I recently tried it & it was impossible from text). It's easier to watch a video & do the same thing. Alternatively, start by making 4 chain & joining that into a circle by putting the hook into the first chain, yarn round hook & pull through both loops on hook. But grab the resulting circle of chains firmly between your L thumb & forefinger & fidget the middle open before you try to put the hook into it to make real stitches. This can be the centre of your granny square. Then a few trebles & chains & you're away!

What Android said, @Boiledbeetle.

Make a chain of four stitches, then (keeping the yarn on the hook) stick the hook through the first chain, yarn round hook and draw it back through both loops. Hey presto, a ring. Much easier!

Hey guys I made it! <chugs slowly into view>

This new place is rather lovely isn't it? I like the snug. I may need to shrink in size a wee bit though..

I can only knit badly and I can't crochet at all. I should learn, sure I'd like it, but I'm another one who'd probably need a very patient person to show me, rather than figuring it out from a video or a book..

But, in a slightly similar vein, I bought myself some lego today as a treat to myself - never been remotely tempted by that before, but I fancied something to do with my hands and they had lego spring flowers! So nice! Feeling cheery just thinking about it. (Plus my lovely DH got me some real ones too, as it's my b'day 🌼)

EmpressaurusKitty · 02/04/2026 19:52

Bella Coco on YouTube is good for the basics, though there’s nothing like someone actually showing you.

All my foster cats took crocheted blankets with them to their new homes. I fostered Kitty’s son, too, so he took a blanket that smelled of his mum.

Happy birthday @ShinyBlueTractor!

@MyrtleLion , the "buy a goddamn vibrator" thread is in 'Mumsnet with Disabilities' and it's an American autistic woman with learning difficulties endlessly asking how to get men to date her. Well, to shag her on hook up sites. Her mother has medical guardianship and blocks her attempts to get her IUD removed

It's a disaster waiting to happen .

You don't have to do crafting. We will still love you.

And Maud might get a bit stroppy if you are preoccupied rather than managing her socials...

It's a very important role 💙

Oh god, those threads.

It’s not just that she wants sex. It’s that she wants to have babies & seems to want MNers to tell her she’ll be able to one day. But she comes across as a teenager despite being (I think) about 30.

FuzzyPuffling · 02/04/2026 19:57

I stand with Boily. I can neither knit nor crochet and have lived for a vast number of years being unable to do either.
It matters not.

Boily would you like to join me in the "Not at all Woolly" room?

She doesn't appear to have capacity to make good decisions.

Bella Coco

Granny Square for Absolute Beginners

4 minutes in = 4-chain loop

She's very good & very clear. If she can't sort you out then you need someone IRL.

These are a good place to start for beginner crocheting. I think being able to do roof trusses & replacement windows is bloody impressive.
