Welcome to the Bluestocking women's pub. Men are directed to the Staunch Ally just down the road. Otherwise all are welcome. Pull up a chair, give your order to the Wait Gerbil or the Gerbil behind the bar.

Don't forget to name change if you wish to.

Hello @lcakethereforeIam - what a lovely new Fred.

Please may I have a pint of your strongest coffee, bar gerbil?

lcakethereforeIam · 20/03/2026 12:28

Apologies for the lowercase w in the thread title. I think it's the revenge of the AI name generator.

Could I have something celebratory, please? I'm fine with a decent prosecco or cava, thanks. dd's dissertation has been submitted, several hours clear of the deadline and it is a fine piece of work (though I would say that as her mother of course and it's really not an area I knew anything about until I offered my proofreading skills).

Gillian is installed in a new gym and dance studio down the corridor. It is soundproofed, owing to her love of loud and thumpy music. I think we might have found Gillian a niche where she can be useful and happy.

Glenda has been shuffled sideways, by agreement, off the bar and into the tea-room end of things.

Gosie had a late start today. Apparently the bottle and a half of Margaux was a bit much, and she will take today's drive slowly. I think she's somewhere near Lyon.

PastaAllaNorma · 20/03/2026 13:06

O good, back to my usual name.

{unties Mr Pasta from Crow's basement and sets him about making a coffee for ME}

Cheers, Igne! We have a bottle of Cremant in the fridge for this evening so I'll include your DD's dissertation in our Toast To Excellent Things.

Chersfrozenface · 20/03/2026 13:13

Good news, @Igneococcus. I'll drink to that.

JanesLittleGirl · 20/03/2026 14:03

Just dropping in for a glass of the house claret and to make sure that I use the right username.

Thanks for the new thread @lcakethereforeIam

Gosie is giving zero fucks about everything today.

Bugger. I didn't hide quickly enough.

Well, if I'm doing this I'm doing it my way.

No Gillian I'm not putting the cigarette out.

May I have a large glass of rum please? I'm feeling a bit sad. A colleague died today due to cancer. We got on well, had a laugh at work, but weren't friends outside work, yet the news has left me feeling quite tearful. Bloody cancer. So in real life and here, I am raising a glass to Neil. Be at peace.

Magpiecomplex · 20/03/2026 17:12

Blimey, you started a new thread without me!

I've spent most of today thinking about soil. And discovering that the average beef cow produces over 15,000 kg of manure every year. Co-Pilot is giving me side-eye for asking that.

NotAtMyAge · 20/03/2026 17:14

Staggers in to the new thread gratefully after one of those days, in dire need of tea and crumpets and a long sit-down. Yesterday evening at bedtime, we were alerted by my bedside light apparently not working to the fact that our trusty old (21 years) Samsung American fridge-freezer had suddenly developed a fault which had tripped the socket ring main. Cue much consternation and the best part of a day spent tracking down and ordering a suitable replacement which won't be delivered until Tuesday - because of the weekend and living in deepest rural Wales. 😬I've spent the rest of the afternoon shoehorning the freezer contents into our small reserve chest freezer and packing the fresh food into cold boxes with ice packs to keep it edible and I'm knackered. It's at times like these that I know I will turn eighty next month...

PastaAllaNorma · 20/03/2026 17:20

I opened the wrong door and had to beat a hasty retreat. I am not prepared for this sort of energetic nonsense this late in the week.

Or at all.
I did take the Faithful Steed to visit some lovely gardens today, which I haven't been able to get to for ages. I like this freedom lark.

AuntieMsDamsonCrumble · 20/03/2026 17:23

That seemed to be a rather fraught move from the old thread (and thank you Cake for this shiny new one).

The problem with having several days of sunshine in a row, is that you start to think you must do everything that needs doing outside, all at once before it rains again. Then you wonder why you feel so knackered.

I'm just going to sit in this corner with pot of tea and inspect my eyelids (from the inside).

I thought of you this afternoon, Maggers, as I walked B&B to the tune of a vast John Deere tractor - I think it was one of those illustrated below. Now that the land has dried out a little, every tractor in the district is out there, spraying, doing the odd spot of deep ploughing, cultivating, drilling - I drove home the other evening at 9.15 and someone was still at it, lights on. Today's John Deere monster was being followed by literally hundreds of seagulls (somewhere between 3 and 500), and it caused a lovely tailback on the main road when it headed home (or, more likely, off to the next job).

My discovery du jour (though it might have been yesterday...) was that deer eat 10% of their bodyweight each day.

It's properly spring here now - hawthorn leafing, blackthorn coming into flower, the odd woodpecker nail-gunning away in the woods, pigeons shagging in the trees, cock pheasants strutting and squawking in full 'Look at ME!' mode, and still primroses everywhere.

@PastaAllaNorma, I'm so pleased you're getting out and about and have such lovely weather for it. It sounds as if you're channelling Gosie's spirit of adventure.

Woley, I meant to say on the last thread that I love fox red labs. B&B have had various lab friends over the years, but not a fox red.

And I'm sorry about your colleague, Rum. I'll make sure a bar gerbil keeps replenishing your drink.

Boiledbeetle · 20/03/2026 17:47

OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG

OMG

I've just looked at the photo of me in Gillian's torture chamber gym. I cant believe I was next to The Golympic 5 times gold medal winner in the 10cm sprint.

Golightly Goswift is my all time favourite Golympian.

I'm so annoyed I didn't get her autograph. I asked Gillian if I could go back in but was told Golightly had already left.

Maybe next time. Finger's crossed.

Middle kid is on holiday is Seoul at the moment. He says the BTS mania is super intense, posters all over the city and a concert tomorrow - they are expecting 250,000 people at it.
I wonder if there are Korean themed cocktails I could have. Can the gerbils rustle up some soju, do we think?
