Women: from an orderly queue at the bar or take a seat and grab a passing gerbil.

Men: turn left at the end of the road, keep walking until you find the Staunch Ally.

Bar gerbil a full fat coke please and a packet of Scampi Fries please.

Welcome to the Bluestocking women's pub. Men are directed to the Staunch Ally just down the road. Otherwise all are welcome. Pull up a chair, give you...

Now I'm really curious about which site it was @EdithStourton !

A harmless crochet one!

I've read the socks thread and I'm still confused about what I should be wearing. So I'll stick with men's normal socks (possibly now called crew socks) under full length trousers and jeans, men's trainer socks with trainers, cotton tights with skirts and dresses when it's cold enough and bare feet otherwise. I have big feet and haven't found a pair of women's socks that fit me in decades. Maybe that means my feet identify as male feet. 🤔

The socks at FatFace seem to have gone up a bit in size (maybe they now do two sizes). I'm a 7 and they're now a little large.

I'm a very wide 8 (and getting wider thanks to a hereditary osteophyte) so I suspect they won't fit, but thank you for the recommendation. Men's 6.5 to 8.5 fit perfectly, usually.

DeanElderberry · 03/04/2026 11:16

I've given up on women's socks, men's ones come in many nice colours and are wide enough as well as long enough for my feet.

AuntieMsDamsonCrumble · 03/04/2026 11:25

It isn't just socks. So many men's clothes are better tailored and more comfortable than the women's version. When I was working I tried in vain to find some tailored linen trousers for hot days in the city or for more formal occasions abroad. All the ones I found looked like a dishrag even before taking them off the hanger. And yet, it's perfectly possible to get men's tailored trousers in a linen mix.

It makes you wonder why some men want to wear women's clothes. Their own are so much more comfortable and better made.

Bowednotbroken · 03/04/2026 11:28

Cosy feet do socks in 3 (yes THREE!) sizes. I’ve just ordered some so I’ll report back if the medium size is actually big enough not to cause actual pain like many socks do !

I'm an hourglass (albeit a podgy one currently) so most men's clothes wouldn't fit me comfortably, but I certainly agree with better made and better quality. And they have pocketses!

EmpressaurusKitty · 03/04/2026 11:46

I’m 4’11 so I’d drown in men’s clothes, I have enough trouble finding women’s clothes with the right sleeve & leg lengths.

As for the men who want to wear women’s clothes, I think the motivation is all too obvious for a lot of them.

PastaAllaNorma · 03/04/2026 12:34

I have baked MANY things in my new oven and the Uni student and her pals are here. It's lovely, although a bit crowded. Dark chocolate and orange cookies have made the kitchen smell lovely.

Pockets are brilliant, I love clothes with pockets in. DD always wears her brother's old PJ bottoms because they have pockets in. God knows why M7S don't routinely add pockets to women's PJ bottoms like they do to the men's. It can't all be the seditious leaflets.

I have to wear compression socks where they measure the calf and the ankle and then the volume of compression. I have been called by the lymphoedema team who will take many months to see me, but they did send me some new socks!

And my previous socks wer in two parts which looked quite medical. I have been sent some black single socks which just look like socks.

I can recommend crocheting socks to fit. It's my latest addiction! Plus it's a small and very portable project so I can pop it in my bag and whip it out when I meet a friend for coffee or in the sermon at church.

I had a very polite shitting fit in an outdoor shop a few years ago. I wanted to know why the womens version, which used less fabric (smaller) and involved less sewing (no pocketses) were MORE expensive.

And why no pockets? Did they think we'd be taking handbags up bloody mountains or out into the woods?

I was really quite cross.

And, even though lots of gundogs are handled by women, the choice of mud-coloured clothing for women is much smaller than that for men. But I did find myself a very warm and multi-pocketed waterproof coat which didn't cost a complete fortune and has done me about 5 years now.

Here you go - although I used 74% dark chocolate chips instead of white chocolate, and a pinch more salt. (salt sweetens bitter things)

The vintage chocolate chip cookies they link to as an alternative is also a very good recipe - A big favourite in PastaLand because they are gooey.

Chocolate orange cookies

Chocolate and orange - the perfect combination.

My small projects are usually either crochet blocks, or knitted socks/hats.

I've just given myself an idea... I been looking for an excuse to buy some more yarn from John Arbon, and I could rustle myself up a tasteful shawl to wear to a party we've been asked to in May. It's bound to be breezy and chilly...

Britinme · 03/04/2026 14:14

I am in awe that you can expect to start crocheting a shawl in April and expect to wear it in May!

AuntieMsDamsonCrumble · 03/04/2026 14:14

The gerbils have decided not to go to the moon today after all. Someone told them how long it would take to get there and back and they realised they would miss the Easter Egg Hunt.

Also, they discovered that Glenda had drunk most of the rocket fuel (aka Granny Grapeseed's blackberry wine). She is still sleeping it off in the rocket. The capybaras are keeping an eye on her.

ErrolTheDragon · 02/04/2026 22:58

Ah well most of that was incomprehensible crochet talk. I tried it when I was young and couldn’t make sense of the pictures so never got beyond making a chain either.

My daughter, already a demon knitter, taught herself to crochet when they banned knitting needles in cabin luggage in the UK. She isn't fond of flying, so needs something to do while in the air. She tried to teach me, but I was all fingers and thumbs and useless at it, though I really did want to learn. Now my arthritic thumbs and one index finger make it just an unachievable dream.

It's a very quick pattern to work up - I've made 3 of them before, one for me and two for friends. The most tiresome bit is blocking it and waiting for it to dry.

I've just had a look at the John Arbon website and could bankrupt myself there, no problem. I mean, look at this one:

Phew, they're all wool. I'm allergic to wool, so I will have no trouble whatsoever resisting that website! Grin
