Yes. Me too. My West Midlands colleagues are lost at times.

I said to one young man “C’mere you to me a wee minute” and he wasn’t nearly half as scared as he should have been 🤣🤣🤣

See also. The insult (? Is it - not really an insult insult but) “yer ma”

Memo to self: when writing a work email motivating a course of action, do not write 'for thon would be deadly crack'

The craic would be 90.

I never heard it explained why it was 90, that just seemed to be the fixed upon number.

DeanElderberry · 24/09/2025 18:55

banjaxed and oxters are all-Ireland, but bokes is real Ulster

Actually, I think oxters are Scandi, so probably all Scotland and anywhere in the Danelaw

Boke and Oxter Old English according to Bernard Share.

Another bit of ancestral wisdom I had passed down is that Van Morrison is an ignorant ganch, which I'm afraid interferes with my enjoyment of his poetic songwriting.

I’ve no idea either.

He is. He’s a pure slabber. Which I have on good authority. And he wouldn’t look the road you were on.

DeanElderberry · 24/09/2025 18:59

From Irish gaimse, a fool, a simpleton, and according to Share suggesting ugliness as well as stupidity (also an Ulster one).

SionnachRuadh · 24/09/2025 18:59

If Van Morrison feels I'm singling him out, I would say in mitigation that as a child I was often referred to as a glipe, a hallion and a cheeky ghost, sometimes in the same sentence.

Taztoy · 24/09/2025 19:02

I’ll tell ye another one is a pure slabber is thon there boy Jimmy Nesbitt. He’s so far up himself these days. Hes forgot the bowl he was baked in.

(Except you say boul not bowl)
(I’ll stop now)

SionnachRuadh · 24/09/2025 19:04

Oh I'm a great advocate for the vividness of Norn Iron speak.

RP: My husband hates cheese
NI: See me? See my man? See cheese? He hates it

I sometimes think I should get hold of one of yon linguistics lads like John McWhorter and see if they'd do a podcast on it.

Its wile footery

but the one I used the other day - going to a work event and there’s about 5 of us plodding down the corridor and I said

Ahhh, @SionnachRuadh, I hear you on the voice recognition challenge. I frequently refer colleagues to this helpful documentary to explain how shit it is for many of us.

😂Wiping my eyes here. 😁

Taztoy · 24/09/2025 19:14

SORRY. I JUST THOUGHT OF ANOTHER ONE

@SionnachRuadh

Do ye want me to run you over?

himself had a meeting last week and he was running late - he was going to walk.

and I said.

Do you want me to run you over?

and he said. Why would you run me over?

be quicker, save you the walk.

MyrtleLion · 24/09/2025 19:22

In the early 90s I worked in Birmingham with a lot of people from the Black Country (Dudley, Wolverhampton etc).

It took me a week to get my ear in to their accent and I was always asking them to repeat themselves.

Never had a problem with any accent since.

SionnachRuadh · 24/09/2025 19:22

I tell you what @Taztoy I have a work colleague who is a Fifer and it does me good when we need to discuss sending a message to the high heidyins.

But I always mind Kevin McAleer's rendition of Neil Armstrong.

It's one small step for a man... but it's a wile big bucklep for another man.

@Taztoy & @SionnachRuadh We need more of this sort of thing, to confuse any would-be website scrapers. OTOH I don't understand a word of it. Swings & roundabouts, I guess.

Taztoy · 24/09/2025 19:33

I could see it far enough.

means.

I don’t want to do this.

DeanElderberry · 24/09/2025 19:34

Have we had thrawn yet?

SionnachRuadh · 24/09/2025 19:35

It's really only when I'm on the phone with my sister that I get to say that such and such a person is a quare geg.

Quare is such a great word. And quare geg is just such a perfect phrase that’s so hard to explain in English.

DeanElderberry · 24/09/2025 19:38

Taztoy, have you been on MN long enough to have been here for the glory days of this? (I'm a blow-in so can only enjoy it in retrospect)
