Which is the tastiest Protestant traybake?

1000 replies

FiddleFaddleDingDong · 08/03/2019 17:35

NI Protestants are famed for their tray bakes but which is the best traybake of all?

I’m thinking something crunchy and chocolatey, a tiffin like thing. But are there unchocolatey traybakes that I just haven’t been exposed to? Are they keeping all the best recipes to themselves, strictly to be eaten behind closed doors?

And does it get a bit competitive? Does Annie cast aspersions on Doris’ traybaking abilities?

I’m a NI Catholic and love to bake, but, do you know, I have NEVER made a tray bake. What a revelation. #taigsfortraybakes

P.S. is it true that Protestants love garden centres as well?

watsmyname · 08/03/2019 19:55

As a Presbyterian I have made many traybakes in my time. The old favourites are the best - caramel squares and fifteens. I often substitute the cherries with jelly babies. 15 digestive biscuits, 15 marshmallows, 15 jelly babies, 1 tin of condensed milk and coconut to cost the outside with.

There was non-chocolate one made from cornflakes, peanuts and cherries but I haven't seen it in a while.

I often wonder if the mars bar and apple sandwich or chicken and grape sandwich is also a Protestant tradition of whether it was common in other circles?

ElevenOhFive · 08/03/2019 19:56

PierreBezukov yes to the Presbyterian salad sandwiches 🤣

Can we have your snowball recipe please. I love it when your hands get caked in the mix while rolling them and you basically have to eat it off your palms (or is that just me?)

SurgeHopper · 08/03/2019 19:56

I'm just kidding Enid!

Sorry my sarcasm was lost online

watsmyname · 08/03/2019 19:57

@Firstbornunicorn 😂 at the mars bar and apple sandwich

LuluJakey1 · 08/03/2019 19:58

I hate Tophats. Pointless things.
Give me a caramel rice crispie bake.

sheepsheep · 08/03/2019 19:58

@PierreBezukov I also would love that recipe....I think it is the same as what my granny used to make.

Wonder how much a small tin of condensed milk is? I only ever see one size of tin in the shops

I think though I am happy to be corrected, that old tins of condensed milk were labelled 14oz and 7oz. Now there is just one that is 397g which is 14 oz, so 1 small tin is now just half a tin.

mazylou · 08/03/2019 20:00

This lapsed one sure loves a garden centre. I have just remembered Gur Cake. Any takers?

FiddleFaddleDingDong · 08/03/2019 20:01

I'm getting the sense that a yummy traybake filled funeral is the ying to grief's yang!

Wow! Thanks flavia

FiddleFaddleDingDong · 08/03/2019 20:02

What 'in the name of the wee man' is an apple and mars bar sandwich?!

I'm an atheist and I make fucking amazing Mary Berry traybakes. I can recommend Mary Berry's Ultimate Cake Book.

Her recipes work. Especially the crunchy topped lemon loaf which can easily be turned into a traybake.

youllhavehadyourtea · 08/03/2019 20:03

I have even come across a recipe using cold mashed potato in a traybake.

Coconut macaroons made with potato.....(I'm from Scottish Presbyterian stock)

Sundaybakes · 08/03/2019 20:04

Had to register to say I still make marshmallow pom-poms (snowballs?) usually only at Christmas as they are such a fad

youllhavehadyourtea · 08/03/2019 20:05

sorry, bold fail

Sundaybakes · 08/03/2019 20:05

faff not fad - first post & typo fail thanks autocorrect

caffeinebuzz · 08/03/2019 20:05

@Piglet89 I'm a former-NI Protestant and can confirm that on visits home I like to stop off at the garden center cafe for a coffee and a tray bake never realised I was such a cliche.

FiddleFaddleDingDong · 08/03/2019 20:06

Oh chester bread! I'm familiar with that one, although never heard it referred to as Gur Cake before.

I can't believe this is actually a thing, I clicked on the thread thinking it was a funny spelling mistake! off to ask NI protestant dp where all the tray bakes are and why I haven't tried any yet!

watsmyname · 08/03/2019 20:09

@Piglet89 oh you can't beat a visit to the garden centre especially when you can get a tray bake in the cafe.

@FiddleFaddleDingDong soft white pan loaf, buttered, with thin slices of apple (preferably Granny Smith) and mars bar layered onto of each other (1 layer of each) 😋

FlaviaAlbia · 08/03/2019 20:09

My mum made Philadelphia and grape sandwiches Envy I think it's the dark side of the traybake ability.

Piglet89 now you mention it, my Catholic SIL has never been in a garden centre Shock my mum is going to bring her to the one in Donaghadee apparently, they do the best apple tart ..

Doilooklikeatourist · 08/03/2019 20:10

OMG ( hope to not offend anyone )
I bake for a cafe , and fifteens are so going on the menu next week
Ummmm , Maltese traybakes sound good too

FlaviaAlbia · 08/03/2019 20:11

Sundaybakes welcome, we lured you out of lurking with traybakes Grin

Ivegotthree · 08/03/2019 20:12

Placemarking for recipes.

(I am Catholic and like everyone else only clicked to see what the typo was)
