The Bluestocking is reopening

It's time we reopened the Bluestocking, I think.

This is the FWR pub, situated in the charming village of Badley Fuckitt near the Shady Pines rest home. It has a cannon (for reasons lost in the mists of time), goats in the paddock next to the beer garden and a menu including many soups and cakes. It's open all hours, serving breakfast and tea to all weary women, in addition to being the ideal location to metaphorically drown your sorrows.

Naice coffee ...

Just in time for a nightcap, glad the pub has been functioning as it should as a place of comfort, easy companionship and fun.

I also love the word 'scuttle' but mainly in conjunction with 'coal'. How on earth does this word mean (a)solid fuel container (b)how insects move and (c)deliberately sinking a ship? And then there's 'scuttlebutt' meaning rumour...I think that's the original 'water cooler gossip'.

'A guzzle of cakes'?

As for the gorilla: 'Wild? I was LIVID!'

I have decided to wait a couple of weeks before I visit the Bluestocking. I feel that I will get more enjoyment once all the excitement has died down.

Yes! I had a look at the etymology (unless that's insects) once. The different definitions were all arrived at independently, iirc.

Shout out to 'cleave', that simultaneously means split apart and cling together. And 'fast', quick and immovable. I think there are one or two other words like that but I can't think of them off the top of my head.

So you are sending this by the sheer power of thought are you?

Give over I can see you at the bar hiding behind Glenda.

Boiledbeetle · 28/07/2024 23:01

So I googled and there is no collective noun for cake.

Which means we have to make one up!

I'm going for an excitement of cake? or a glory of cake? hmmm. How about a basket of cake?

quantumbutterfly · 28/07/2024 23:01

A necessity of cake.

Boiledbeetle · 28/07/2024 23:06

Right after an exciting day of lifeboats and goats and pirates I'm going to enjoy a nice scotch (not on the rocks) and a bloody good book in one of the plentiful quiet corners of this fine establishment.. If I can get enough of the original posters we could do a poetry reading evening....

Why has everyone suddenly run for the door?

NewNameIRL · 28/07/2024 23:07

An expansion of cake
(quantity and waistlines)?

Boiledbeetle · 28/07/2024 23:11

Have you seen what's going on in the car park?

Who left the gate open?

Émilie? Émilie du Châtelet ? Ça fait une éternité ! Comment vas-tu vielle branche?

Sorry, I've just spotted an old pal, we were at school together...well I was a few years ahead, but who's counting... What's that Em? 141 years 2 months and 11days ahead? Yes of course, you became a famous mathemician as well as a philosopher, didn't you?

Wasn't it lovely to see Olympe de Gouges at the Olympic opening ceremony? I didn't know her personally, did you? She was a few years below you in school, wasn't she? 41years 4 months and 20 days? was it really, Em...

Anyway.. lovely to catch up, see you at Les Femmes Savantes for un petit coup de rosé one of these daysSmile

😁 I think your French is much better than mine. I was impressed that Emilie's translation of Principia Mathematica has stood the test of time: atta girl! Sadly maths is Not My Subject, but she makes for a fab username.
Would love to join you in a glass of pink sometime at The Bluestocking.

lcakethereforeIam · 28/07/2024 23:35

A leaven of cake. Ahem!

a pervasive influence that modifies something or transforms it for the better. Blush

Not too sure about 'pervasive' though.

Pink gin, a good book, toasted crumpets and butter.

FuzzyPuffling · 29/07/2024 07:03

A "Big Slice" of cake, surely?

highame · 29/07/2024 07:08

A stodge of cake

highame · 29/07/2024 07:09

A sunk of cakes

Boiledbeetle · 29/07/2024 07:15

A coma of cakes.

RainbowZebraWarrior · 29/07/2024 07:18

I like the sound of a cornucopia of cakes. Cornucopia relating to 'horn of plenty' in Latin.

Cream Horns a plenty sounds good to me!

FuzzyPuffling · 29/07/2024 07:37

A "yes" of cakes.

MrsOvertonsWindow · 29/07/2024 07:57

Cake sounds ideal for breakfast 😊
Might rest on a chair watching BB herd the various animals that have been unleashed.

BIWI · 29/07/2024 09:32

A battenburg of cake, surely?

It is surprisingly difficult to corral a herd of goat's being ridden by Quokkas who think it's the grand national.

Although I'd put a tenner on number 9 Blue Stocking ridden by Quentin Quokka in the 3.30 steeplechase if I were you.

Boiledbeetle · 29/07/2024 12:22

Or if you fancy a chance of some decent money if it wins. No 13 Cakes flip flops ridden by Queenie Quokka has goods odds as an outside chance

Boiledbeetle · 29/07/2024 12:23

Not actually Cakes flip flops, just the name of the goat who ate them

lcakethereforeIam · 29/07/2024 12:24

I bloody knew it!
