Vogue magazine has published a piece by Emily Bridges:

I Was Banned From Competitive Cycling Because I’m Trans. That Won’t Stop Me Fighting For My Rights.

Full of the usual hogwash and inaccuracies, and the discredited CCES report is doing some heavy lifting.

And apparently they will be trying to take British Cycling to court. We shall see.

I Was Banned From Competitive Cycling Because I’m Trans. That Won’t Stop Me Fighting For My Rights

Cyclist Emily Bridges has been competitively racing since she was 10 years old, but now, due to new policies introduced by British Cycling, she’s been banned from competing in the women’s category.

Sport is what peaked my partner, who's currently tutting his way through Sharron Davies' book, which he bought off his own bat after being a fan of hers in the 80s when he swam as a teenager at club level. So thanks Emily!

If India had a brain they’d be dangerous

of course different sex classes were brought in so men wouldn’t be be upset at always losing….

sorry, but honestly how fucking stupid would you have to be to believe this?

Like all of the prominent names, past and present, remarkably effective and disproportionately influential through media, invitations to speak to govt. committees, sit on panels, appointed to senior positions with the CPS and free to direct policy…

Thanks Iggy. As always your sharing makes great reading.

Doc Stock nailed it.

Igneococcus · 27/08/2023 07:15

I sometimes wonder if some UofSussex students look at her writing and think "I could have been taught by her, sigh".
Commenting has ended after 11 comments but maybe they open it up again when the moderators are at work. Every single one is supportive.

Doc Stock's analysis is excellent

borntobequiet · 27/08/2023 10:08

That’s a very good piece. I particularly like her characterisation of such publications:

Their raison d’être is to induce in readers a degree of panicky self-consciousness bordering on insanity.

RealityFan · 27/08/2023 10:14

Girls have always had their sense of worth badly failed by trash like Vogue. Now they're going for the Big Kahuna, even getting them to doubt their very intrinsic identity.

The line that made me laugh was the one about male puberty giving “access to the best doping programme in the world”.

I know that isn’t in EB’s playlist, but it’s going into mine.

Gothambutnotahamster · 27/08/2023 12:24

That's a great article, thanks for sharing!

Magazines should stop with all the photoshopping even more generally.

Is that Emily's mum?

I believe it's the editor of the magazine Diva. The picture appeared online when Emily was portrayed in that mag.

Linda Riley.

Sarah Vine may be in the right ballpark for this but she swing and a miss on the unwanted kiss for Jenni Hermoso.

I believe XTwitter got a community note put on Vogue? Vogue tweeted (Xed?) that Em was barred from cycling, the correction is that Em can still compete in male/open.

Heh, excellent!

2Rebecca · 27/08/2023 23:11

I've not seen many people standing up for Vogue. I know no-one who buys it now though.

MavisMcMinty · 28/08/2023 00:11

The only people I knew who ever bought/read/collected Vogue were fashion students in the 1980s.

Baldieheid · 28/08/2023 10:13

Yep, that was me.

I once counted the pages and how many were adverts and worked it out as a percentage - it was over 70%.

Then the Internet happened and Dobby was free.

Floisme · 28/08/2023 10:30

I used to read it all the time. I never viewed it as a shopping guide but I liked the features - and sometimes the adverts too - that presented clothes as 'wearable art' - sorry for the wanky phrase but I can't think of another one. I always enjoyed the bonkers photo shots (still do). The whole thing was like a glimpse into another world.

I weaned myself off it after their women's suffrage 'celebration' although it's taken some time and I might well have given in and bought this September's edition (because it's the biggest one of the year) but now I'll just be taking a peek in the supermarket instead.

shuddupayaface · 29/08/2023 08:41

Wow, didn’t realise how backwards mumsnetters could be. Regardless of whether you agree with this sort of thing or not, the people insulting her appearance are incredibly small and pathetic human beings and I hope they address your own low self esteem in therapy.

Baldieheid · 29/08/2023 08:49

Ooh, a drive- by scolding.

How quaint.

Bridges is male.

MavisMcMinty · 29/08/2023 10:43

I’m irritated that they used Bridges - a male, however “kind” you want to be - instead of one of the thousands of actual female athletes. That’s a reasonable gripe, surely? Vogue is a women’s magazine.
