Comedy event cancelled at the Fringe because of Glinner?

I hadn't seen anything about this on X/Twitter previously, but apparently some activists have been putting pressure on the venue and they've cancelled an upcoming event called Comedy Unleashed because one of the comedians is Graham Linehan. How utterly pathetic. https://twitter.com/UnleashedComedy/status/1691476377793409024?s=20 Seems to be organised by/associated with Andrew Doyle, aka Titania McGrath.

Original and amended cancellation notices.

Bigots will bigot. Anyone who cancels someone because they won't pretend a man is a woman is a bigot.

IcakethereforeIam · 15/08/2023 18:01

Won't they fall foul of the same legislation that caused the reverse of the Joanna Cherry cancellation?

NicCageisnotNickCave · 15/08/2023 18:03

I like the amended version.

Is it just me or does this cry-bully cancellation nonsense suddenly seem really dated and unfashionable?

The blue haired zeitgeist has left the building…

AccidentallyWesAnderson · 15/08/2023 18:06

Has anyone sent this amended image to Leith Arches? I'm tempted! Of course they have disabled the comments section!

When will this madness end? I've just had a TRA mention free speech (the irony!) to me on the Herald's Facebook page on the satire piece on Joanna Cherry, (not a lot however got that it was satire).

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 15/08/2023 18:10

I'm very much hoping that this is all a last gasp. Streisand effect, of course. If they'd just let it happen, how many people would have known anything about it?

I've private messaged them as I go there sometimes. It's ridiculous.

It's collective punishment to make it harder for someone they hate to get work in the future.
They are on the wrong side of the law and normal people would look at previous cases and explain to the gender zealots that they couldn't leave themselves vulnerable to legal action. But I suspect that many of these venues will refuse to learn the lesson because they see themselves as righteous. So every single time, the cancelled GC person will have to at least threaten legal action if not actually take it. And the comedy night will have been and gone by the time the venues are brought to see sense and much expense and time will have been wasted. And that's without mentioning the stress for everyone.
Every single act on the bill should threaten to sue. Cancelling a gig for no good reason two days beforehand is detrimental to them.

Yes. They're not very smart.

*meant to quote @IcakethereforeIam, not the OP. Sorry.

This is slightly different, Graham wasn't billed in the original line up when the booking was made by Comedy Unleashed, it has just been revealed today that he is a 'surprise guest'.

BeBraveLittlePenguin · 15/08/2023 18:36

How though? I mean, if they feel strongly, they can refund anyone aggrieved (& offer the tickets to more sensible people), but pulling the whole thing because Glinner has views they don't like seems on all fours with Forstater, Cherry et al.

NecessaryScene · 15/08/2023 18:40

"No unexpected X" is just as illegal under discrimination law as "No X".

The Equality Act applies to people whether or not they pre-book or turn up on the day...

Mochudubh · 15/08/2023 18:50

Article in Scottish Daily Express. I haven't read it yet, it popped up on my news feed.

Snowypeaks · 15/08/2023 19:08

@Horticulturer
I think the issue is that the reason for the cancellation would not be lawful. It appears from their statement that they have pulled the booking because they disapprove of Glinner's protected beliefs. That is unlawful discrimination.

I liked this bit from the article:
There are no details on the specific views they find offensive but the controversial writer has been a vocal critic of transgender ideology and its impact on the lives of women and girls.
It's a lot more accurate than most press descriptions of Glinner, KJK, etc.

PaleBlueMoonlight · 15/08/2023 19:27

This is just ridiculous - what is wrong with these venues

BlackForestCake · 15/08/2023 19:28

Woop.

Looks like they have had a word with their lawyers.

The original statement has been replaced with a vague, woolly one that says blah blah this event is not in line with our values blah blah (if you don't say what exactly you object to, nobody can claim discrimination).

IcakethereforeIam · 15/08/2023 19:30

I don't think that'll save them.

BlackForestCake · 15/08/2023 19:34

No...

ArabeIIaScott · 15/08/2023 19:41

'We are an inclusive venue and will not allow such views to violate our space'

Crikey.

Igmum · 15/08/2023 19:42

Fingers crossed they can find another venue, but I'm not optimistic. Edinburgh in Fringe season is rammed. I guess we just have to look forward to them being sued senseless.

IcakethereforeIam · 15/08/2023 19:44

That Comedy Guide article seemed actually.....sane.

ArabeIIaScott · 15/08/2023 19:44

Well, I look forward to hearing what the lawyers say about this.

Had Leith Arches not heard what happened with the Stand and Joanna Cherry? Sure she could probably just Tippex out the names and reuse the letter.
