Comedy event cancelled at the Fringe because of Glinner?

I hadn't seen anything about this on X/Twitter previously, but apparently some activists have been putting pressure on the venue and they've cancelled an upcoming event called Comedy Unleashed because one of the comedians is Graham Linehan. How utterly pathetic. https://twitter.com/UnleashedComedy/status/1691476377793409024?s=20 Seems to be organised by/associated with Andrew Doyle, aka Titania McGrath.

I’m guessing Graham will also be on Andrew Doyle’s show again on GB News this Sunday?

napody · 16/08/2023 09:45

Oh my God.... could this be the tipping point that gets Father Ted: The Musical made???!! 🤞

IcakethereforeIam · 16/08/2023 09:46

I hope so, it's giving him a little more leverage.

Apparently the venue regularly holds drag events.

So it's OK to host sexualised caricatures of women, but it's beyond the pale to host a comedy legend who stands up for women.

And they call that inclusive.

What a time to be alive.

And someone who says he works there is on Twitter calling women Karen all over his feed. Seems there might be just a smidgeon of misogyny in the atmosphere there.

TLDRfuckers · 16/08/2023 00:06

I doubt he would but why the hesitation with the new name?

Is this the same people who insist it’s a marathon not snickers type thing?

Who cares? It’s just a habit.
I call my kids each others names and the dog sometimes gets called the late cat’s name.

Elon likes calling stuff X, he tried to call one of his son’s X, one of his other businesses is called Space X.

Doesn’t mean we are also forced to call everything X.

Considering this thread is about a comedy show that was cancelled because a bloke refused to use the deferential new language others demanded of him it’s a weird one to choose to start trying to compel speech on.

I don’t care for Snickers but I can never recall what they renamed Opal
Fruits as…
I just buy Fruitella instead.

*There's been so much sneering and minimising of Maya's case amongst TRAs that they have no idea just how powerful it is.

Until it bites them in the arse*

'We're on the right side of history, the law doesn't apply to us.'

Until it does.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 16/08/2023 10:16

I think they don't understand that Maya's case doesn't just relate to employment law.

NicCageisnotNickCave · 16/08/2023 10:27

The activist spin has been that The Forstater Ruling means that GC people are allowed to think ‘transphobic’ thoughts ie ‘Men aren’t women’ but we aren’t allowed to say it out loud, at least not anywhere where anyone who identifies as trans
might hear us.

Obviously this is bollox but it’s not really a surprise if some normies have fallen for TRA fibs.

The Solicitor’s letter the venue are about to receive should clear any confusion up!

IcakethereforeIam · 16/08/2023 10:30

Presumably, the activists believe without Forstater we wouldn't even be allowed to think these thoughts. And they call us fascists!

ArabeIIaScott · 16/08/2023 10:35

These views cannot 'violate' their space.

How will the ensure that anyone entering their spaces doesn't have unacceptable views? Brain scan? Questionnaire? Lie detector? What if someone accidentaly has a wrongthink, but then changes their mind?

RealityFan · 16/08/2023 10:40

There was a writer being interviewed on Hard Talk on the BBC who was wittering on about cancel culture not really being a thing, and even if there was pressure to conform, that if you were funny, like, really really funny, you could transcend the pressure of the mob, but also you don't really have to write about these things if you feel pressurised.

I wonder what she'd have replied when the perfect example of Glinner's cancellation here, has been put to her.

Glinner would rise above if he was really really funny about trans?

He shouldn't get involved if he fears cancellation?

Too bad the interviewer couldn't keep her on the subject, to see just how complicit she is in this culture chill moment in time.

Pixiedust1234 · 16/08/2023 10:46

I can probably stop, now.

You could ...but I'm thoroughly enjoying seeing all those links Grin

Fascinating seeing this play out on Twitter - it's really blown the doors off.

Plenty of comics seeing the issue for what it really is - they could be next, and it's their livelihoods on the line. They're not vocally supporting Andrew Doyle or Glinner personally but after Sadowitz last year this seems to have people very concerned at the way the wind is blowing.

Jo Caulfield has supported the cancellation and been roundly slapped down. The only one I've seen going for Glinner is Robin Ince and it's not a good look for him.

Even Jeremy Vine has retweeted Andrew Doyle, asking "what the hell is going on here?"

This really shines major sunlight on everything Glinner has fought for and it's so nice to see some vindication for him at last.

If political comedy doesn't challenge orthodoxy, what is its point?

This was my thought. Since when does comedy not offend? Lenny Bruce is turning in his grave.

RealityFan · 16/08/2023 11:02

Imagine the adolescent lack of critical thinking. That Glinner is so toxic, language being actual violence and all, that you cave in the whole gig. You apply the nuclear option.

And those others booked damaged by the mass cancellation. Some must be anti Glinner as well. Do they approve of this action, happy to fall on their swords in sympathy with having the toxic Glinner cancelled?

Or do they grow up and think independently for a change, and realise that this gross overaction is just bad all around? It's not just a bad isolated incident, but now symptomatic of the whole woke McCarthy instincts that have infected impolite society?

Is anyone in public life beyond JKR and the brave GCs gonna ever say anything?

Or is the culture now so sour, that these positions are hardening from the artists' community, a rancid mix of exceptionalism and fear, that these total overreactions can only ramp up?

RoyalCorgi · 16/08/2023 11:10

The Fringe hosts dozens of extremely offensive comedians every year. But they choose to cancel the one who talks about women's rights.

I'm a bit surprised that the Joanna Cherry case seems to have passed the venue by. Do they pay any attention at all to what's happening in the news?

HereForTheFreeLunch · 16/08/2023 11:13

Maybe they are actually closet GC! They have certainly spread the word like we could never do😂

Slothtoes · 16/08/2023 11:14

Oh what absolute pathetic idiots. The answer to not liking the sound of a completely optional comedy show is: maybe don’t buy yourself a fucking ticket then

Nothing so unfunny and unappealing as authoritarian misogynists who need to not allow anyone else to hear clever, humane but ultimately gentle and tolerant humour that could burst their completely made up validation bubble. Embarrassing

RealityFan · 16/08/2023 11:17

Is this how it's gonna be? One friggin' court case after another? To be ignored by the next BeKind venue/employer, civic society on a constant "transgression/sue/GC victim wins/another transgression/sue/win"
Wash/rinse/repeat.

I mean, when does case law become universally applied?

We don't have burglars thumbing their nose to their victims and saying "sue me". One after the other.

Is this the uncivil war ad infinitum? The Forstater and Bailey victories ignored over and over again, the Bindel and Cherry wins trashed over and over again?

Is this the future, scorched Earth as lawyers pockets are lined, forever and a day?

A tweet from James Esses today proves your point quite succinctly:

So much has changed since Glinner’s original cancellation (GIDs closure, detransitioners speaking out, ISLA BRYSON’S LEGGINGS, Lia Thomas etc etc) that 🤞more people Will be able to see that actually, he’s right, and he’s been right all along.

Too bad it doesn't keep them off the streets.
The internet has so much to not recommend it, lol.

MavisMcMinty · 16/08/2023 11:47

Thanks for all the clips! From the JHB interview Glinner points out they’re cancelling shows “because of the people selling ice creams in there”.

Laughter is an involuntary thing. Perhaps these people are scared they or others may involuntarily laugh at jokes they should really frown upon (“Down with that sort of thing!”). I LOVE to be shocked into laughter, even if that makes me feel uncomfortable. Like the film Jojo Rabbit - was I really laughing at Nazi propaganda? Why, yes I was, involuntarily but heartily.
