Comedy event cancelled at the Fringe because of Glinner?

I hadn't seen anything about this on X/Twitter previously, but apparently some activists have been putting pressure on the venue and they've cancelled an upcoming event called Comedy Unleashed because one of the comedians is Graham Linehan. How utterly pathetic. https://twitter.com/UnleashedComedy/status/1691476377793409024?s=20 Seems to be organised by/associated with Andrew Doyle, aka Titania McGrath.

Wallace is a vile, gaslighting creep, who like many TRAs such as Montgomerie are fed by well meaning people responding to their trolling and incessant attention seeking. All attention is good for a narcissist.

IwantToRetire · 20/08/2023 15:59

Seeing the name Freda Wallace has reminded me (and there is a thread about this but cant find it) that he has created a fundraiser called Sarah's Bop which inlcude the words that SJB was arrested for, and a facebook post trying to sell tee shirts with the same hate speech got deleted.

The link to the song is here https://soundcloud.com/search?q=Sarah%27s%20Bop but I couldn't find any contact details for the music streaming platform to make a complaint / report to the police. Can anyone work out how to contact them. And is it true the FW is in Manchester to relevant police force would be Manchester Police.

Worth remember that SJB is faces 2 charges in relation to what he said.

'It's a bit mad , Ted!'

There's a really poignant interview with Glinner on an Irish news web site, which I read as it seems he is rarely referred to by Irish media.

So I checked out the web site and sadly, yet again, it is said to be rigth wing.

But if you want to read it, includes comments about gender identity and Irish government https://gript.ie/father-ted-creator-blasts-irish-governments-hate-speech-bill/

I dont know if other news outlets in Ireland and having this discussion.

sorry have now worked out that posts re "Sarah's Bop" are on the SJB 2n thread (obviously) and someone has worked out that you can report an offensive upload via a ticket - see https://help.soundcloud.com/hc/en-us/articles/115003445827-Reporting-extremism-and-illegal-content

I watched this clip on YouTube, but some of the jokes have been edited out such as the Margot Robbie bit. Does anyone know if there is a complete version of the routine available online?

NicCageisnotNickCave · 20/08/2023 18:51

No idea, but as this is only GL’s 5/6th (?) stand up gig it’s somewhat understandable that he wouldn’t want all his material online.

The internet has been a massive pain in the arse for comics who are trying to hash out new material (stand up is one of the few art/entertainment forms that needs to be presented to an audience while still a work in progress).

Abhannmor · 20/08/2023 19:24

Gript is probably right wing in the Spiked.com sense. Too bad nobody else in Ireland runs with this kind of story.

Of course the media couldn't ignore Barbie Kardashian and there was a phone in show on that subject on RTE radio 1. Virtually all the callers supported single sex prisons , as you would expect . So RTE battened down the hatches again after this chastening experience.

There have been one or two GC friendly articles in the Irish Independent and Irish Times. Irish Twitter and FB is majority GC from what I can see in comments. TRAs here still act like they are the vanguard of some revolution , or at least affect this attitude. But it's amazing what you can tell your head , isn't it?

IcakethereforeIam · 20/08/2023 19:38

The Guardian has had a couple of articles on the EF. One mentioned Glinner and Jo Cherry. It was about if the Fringe was losing it's outsider reputation becoming tame and corporate. Reminded me of a slightly desperate 'we're mad, we are'. It was fairly neutral, although it mentioned Ada H Dee by his real rather than stage name. Which most people wouldn't recognise and I can't now remember, Seb Samuels? Can no longer find it to link.

The other I looked at because it had allowed comments. Jo Cherry got a mention. The author claimed no comedians were doing much on culture war because it was stale. Yeah, right. Totally not because they were scared of offending someone and getting cancelled.

Anyway, there were a fair number of "cancelled" comments. But, to me, one stood out. Bless you Flumpasaurus

Perhaps because of the Sunday papers there seem to be a number of articles out today that I've not seen before. There's an archive link below to a Susan Dalgety article in the Scotsman. Contains the only mention of the magnificent Shaunyboy I can recall seeing outside of MN FWR.

Apparently he's trying to crowdfund a Sturgeon mockumentary.

Good article by Simon Evans: https://x.com/spikedonline/status/1693231405075931273?s=61&t=Og74NL350OdVbEJ3Se9_Iw

I’ve got a lot of time for Evans, he’s very funny and he always comes across as a decent sort.

The Crowdfunder for the documentary got 122% of its target in just over 24 hours. There seems to be a bit of an appetite for it!

IcakethereforeIam · 20/08/2023 23:07

Brilliant, he's obviously more famous than I realised, which is no less than he deserves.

STASI-LITE? I DISPUTE THAT DESCRIPTION VEHEEMENTLY

Boiledbeetle · 21/08/2023 01:29

Just in case they never unhide my previous post it was a link to rumble to the whole glinner v RL interview. Rather than a clipped version.

You can access it via tweet below.

SinnerBoy · 21/08/2023 02:35

Thanks for that, Boiled. Blimey, Rosanna Lockwood comes across as an ideological idiot, with little understanding of the subject. She repeatedly refused to name any prominent trans activist, who's condemned various rapists, paedophiles and other abusers.

It just show's that they really have nothing. Grace Blakely had absolutely nothing to contribute apart from, "He's not cancelled! He's dangerous! You shouldn't have had him on the programme!" (ie you should have cancelled him, not that cancelling actually exists...)

Hepwo · 21/08/2023 07:11

They are in an alternative reality where they think they are knowledgeable and Graham is a bad person.

Its shocking to watch especially when they are doing it for sex offenders with creepy Tatchel egging them on.

Simpletons. Silly posh women.

Sab, I think.

I am a bit annoyed, Comedy Unleashed said if the gig was cancelled we'd get refunds. something did happen but it wasn't what I'd paid for, the sets were short, missing an act, acts were tense, audience was looking out for TRAs, the press were there and I did NOT want my face on camera and spent the time hiding in my hood, we were looking out for activists, no seat, no loo, no bar. The last email said if you want a refund to let them know because they had to hire a stage. It's not fair, I'm skint, the gig was cancelled and what I went to was a protest, not a comedy unleashed event. Am I being mean by wanting a refund?

NicCageisnotNickCave · 21/08/2023 18:00

I don’t think you are mean and equally I don’t think they are wrong for not automatically issuing refunds to all (because the change in circumstances was outside of their control and a lot of their costs eg publicity/getting to Edinburgh/staying in Edinburgh/paying a cut to the ticket sales website were still incurred).

Have you contacted to ask for a refund? If you do that and they say no then my judgement of them would definitely be clouded.

Some people will be content to pay for what they got, others would prefer a refund. Hopefully Comedy Unleashed will refund those who ask.
