Comedy event cancelled at the Fringe because of Glinner?

I hadn't seen anything about this on X/Twitter previously, but apparently some activists have been putting pressure on the venue and they've cancelled an upcoming event called Comedy Unleashed because one of the comedians is Graham Linehan. How utterly pathetic. https://twitter.com/UnleashedComedy/status/1691476377793409024?s=20 Seems to be organised by/associated with Andrew Doyle, aka Titania McGrath.

Apparently the venue regularly holds drag events.

So it's OK to host sexualised caricatures of women, but it's beyond the pale to host a comedy legend who stands up for women.

And they call that inclusive.

What a time to be alive.

Some great comments on their fb page reviews. I hope they get sued to hell and back.

Andrew and Graham held the door open and they walked straight through it didn't they?

There's a Leith Arches employee boasting about why it was cancelled and abusing everyone that mentions the law and discrimination.

I can't help but admire how arrogantly dim they are even for social justice warriors.

There's been so much sneering and minimising of Maya's case amongst TRAs that they have no idea just how powerful it is.

Until it bites them in the arse.

Leith Arches, Glinner AND Graham Lineham currently trending on Twitter (I'm not calling it X - inane bullshite of a name).

I'm looking forward to the inevitable grovelling apology from the Arches once the lawyers take a look🍿

Aw! Mary Bourke is one of the cancelees! Pretty sure she’s a Mumsnetter.

That Comedy Guide article seemed actually.....sane.

That really lulled me into a false sense of security, that did... It's all so flipping tiresome.

I see Elliot Steel, Mark's son, has come out saying just don't go and see anyone you don't like... was getting stick for it even though he didn't mention any names.

Ooh! " Gender critical writer", not TRANSPHOBE, Interesting.

Incidentally, does anyone else get the final scene of the Donald Sutherland version of Invasion of the Body Snatchers in their head when they hear accusations of bigot, transphobe etc?

X is its name now, Twitter is history. Women can now post without the toxic cancellation, why cling on to the old name?

Presumably Elon won’t ban us for deadnaming his app? 😂

'We are an inclusive venue and will not allow such views to violate our space'

Crikey.

One word: Irony.🤣🤣🤯🤣

I doubt he would but why the hesitation with the new name?

Is this the same people who insist it’s a marathon not snickers type thing?

Goodviibrations · 16/08/2023 00:56

X is a daft name. It's just a letter so looks out of place mid-sentence. The url is still Twitter so it makes sense to call it after its actual link.

twelly · 16/08/2023 03:27

so much for free speech

twelly · 16/08/2023 03:28

The views of an individual have nothing to do with the comedy - this is a dangerous precedent.

Agreed. A random word - fine. A letter is wanky.

Transparent2 · 16/08/2023 09:30

What are we going to call the Xerati now?

ArabeIIaScott · 16/08/2023 09:37

Except here is Graham Linehan on TalkTV:

Like almost everything in this sorry saga, if this wasn't so fucking tragic it would be hilarious.
