Comedy event cancelled at the Fringe because of Glinner?

I hadn't seen anything about this on X/Twitter previously, but apparently some activists have been putting pressure on the venue and they've cancelled an upcoming event called Comedy Unleashed because one of the comedians is Graham Linehan. How utterly pathetic. https://twitter.com/UnleashedComedy/status/1691476377793409024?s=20 Seems to be organised by/associated with Andrew Doyle, aka Titania McGrath.

They are dumb as a box of rocks for pulling this shit. I hope Graham sues the absolute shit out of them for this. They deserve it just for not paying attention to what happened before with Joanna.

PonyPatter44 · 15/08/2023 19:53

And yet if he'd appeared under his stage name of Rainbow Butt Dildo Monkey, they would probably have given him the entire venue, never mind the best dressing room.

Snowypeaks · 15/08/2023 19:53

Every act could sue them, I would have thought. They've all been cancelled, not just Glinner.

Goodviibrations · 15/08/2023 19:54

slow clap

Way to prove the point that there's a need for alternative comedy and that cancellation is a thing.

They only announced him yesterday, too. Ridiculous.

ArabeIIaScott · 15/08/2023 19:57

Anyway, this is really terrible and will definitely set the cause back. Thank God there's nothing called the Streisand Effect that will ensure this show, venue and comedian will be catapulted straight into the news, thereby releasing more sunlight onto the authoritarian and censorious orthodoxy that holds UK culture in a death grip, supplemented by truly grotty people on Twitter crowing about Glinner's cancellation, thereby exposing their own shortcomings to the world. If that were the case, Leith Arches might have been in danger of helping women's rights, rather than heroically silencing a man they disagree with!

Dymaxion · 15/08/2023 19:59

The Leith Arses statement is comedy gold.

FigRollsAlly · 15/08/2023 20:28

That original statement is very badly written. Not only are they sanctimonious fools who are not fit to lick Glinner’s boots but they can’t even communicate properly. The other statement is fantastic.

BlackForestCake · 15/08/2023 20:30

Leith is full of absolute wankers so it's only to be expected.

nettie434 · 15/08/2023 20:54

Looking at the way this was advertised, Leith Arches are either very bad at understanding their audience because they couldn't work out what sort of humour would involve 'freethinking comedy' and a 'previously cancelled comedian' or they did realise what sort of show it would be but they didn't predict the backlash. Either way, it doesn't reflect very well on their competence.

'We are an inclusive venue and will not allow such views to violate our space'

Crikey.

How has "inclusive" come to mean the exact opposite?

How has "inclusive" come to mean the exact opposite?

Actually, what I wrote isn't accurate is it. What "inclusive" actually means is "we include certain people (always the same ones) and exclude others (again, always the same ones)".

Woman2023 · 15/08/2023 21:12

Actually, what I wrote isn't accurate is it.

Love that you apply critical thinking to your own statements, and correct them. We wouldn't be in this mess if everyone did that.

'In a statement released today the venue said “please sue us and for the avoidance of any doubt on this matter we formally declare that we have completely breached the equality act and invite you to use JCKC’s publicly available silk’s opinion against us lol”'

Yes they are a little bit stupid to try and cancel Andrew Doyle, who has covered every cancellation in this area on his show for the past couple of years. I’m sure he’ll meekly put up with it.

JanesLittleGirl · 15/08/2023 21:56

If political comedy doesn't challenge orthodoxy, what is its point?

ArabeIIaScott · 15/08/2023 21:57

'Ms Cherry, who is also a top lawyer, later posted that the Linehan case "looks like a pretty clear case of belief discrimination"'

Oh, my.

Leith is full of absolute wankers so it's only to be expected.

It's a strange place - the extensive gentrification has meant that there's loads of navel gazing TRA's, drinking 'eco cocktails' (whatever the fuck those are) in revamped spit and sawdust places/hanging the 'progressive' flag out the windows all along Great Junction Street and Constitution Street and then there's the actual Leithers who roll their eyes at the nonsense and have bigger shit to deal with frankly.

The writer has been been an outspoken critic of transgender self-identification.

I had to keep checking the url as I couldn't quite believe the BBC would phrase it like that 😮
