Women's rights general conversations - Thread 4

Continuation of Thread 3.

There is so much excellent information and so many active discussions on FWR that I wondered if it would be useful to have a thread to sort of "cross-fertilise" between them - airing little thoughts or vignettes that wouldn't themselves merit their own thread, to highlight other posts/threads of particular interest or to point to notable developments on fast-moving threads so that casual observers know where to look.

(For example, "the X thread has meandered onto a fascinating discussion of Y" or "Poster P's amazing analysis on thread Z might have relevance to the scenario in thread W" or "Has anybody noticed this recurring theme that keeps coming up??" or even "Random bloke asked me to smile while I was choosing onions, grr"- that sort of thing).

I'm left-handed, but I don't feel like checking.

Winterborne74 · 09/03/2023 18:35

That's not very public spirited of you.

Maybe later, eh? MrG is also left-handed - will ask him when the Arsenal match is over.

duc748 · 09/03/2023 19:00

"Things you thought you'd never say on Mumsnet..." 😀

Gonners · 09/03/2023 19:26

It's still 2-all in Lisbon, but - having given it some thought - I think left/right handedness is somehow related to the brain, whereas all the evidence suggest that bollocks surely aren't.

SinnerBoy · 09/03/2023 19:55

This is from the Jess Philips Femicide thread:

Evening, everyone. We're afraid we're going to take this down now. As you know, we do allow discussion of biological facts here and we know that these discussions are important. However, this thread feels a bit personal and, let's not forget, concerns the murder of a child whose family and friends have been devastated by this loss. We just don't think this particular discussion will come to any good. We hope you understand.

Be fair, he's posting from his motorbike and needs ONE hand on the bars...

Kucinghitam · 09/03/2023 20:33

I don't know about size, but isn't it usually the left one that hangs a bit lower?

OP posts:
Gonners · 09/03/2023 22:04

We have data from a left-hander who is happy for me to share this. Right sac hangs very visibly lower, but left testicle seems to be bigger. MrG points out that this may, of course, be because it's more "compacted" into a smaller sac. In the absence of scales and calipers, this is the best we can do.

MrG says he very much hopes this helps, though he's not quite sure with what.

BinturongsSmellOfPopcorn · 09/03/2023 22:31

Please thank MrG for his contribution to the body of knowledge.

On a completely different subject, Lady Rhondda - founder of the Six Point Group and of Time and Tide - will be getting a statue (if they can raise the funds).

duc748 · 09/03/2023 22:46

Reminded me of bertillonage, which I learnt about from Paris Police 1900 😀

NotDrowningJustCrowing · 09/03/2023 23:42

Wow, this thread has been on fire today. Love the Dostoyevsky! Adore the testicles of objectivity!

It's funny - not funny at all - that the TRA thing is seen as so left wing and indeed most of those who are a part of TRSOH would think of themselves as left-wing but the whole thing couldn't be more capitalistic if it tried. It's all about the self, it's all about selfishness, it's all about entitlement and what you want you get and fuck everyone else. It's also when we get to the TW side of the whole issue it's about taking away hard fought for rights from others just because they can. Margaret Thatcher is their grandmother and we are all their handmaidens.

Re my deleted thread on the previous thread. I wondered too but I think that I indirectly misgendered the columnist. Not directly. I didn't use the wrong pronouns, at least I think I didn't, but I did complain about the Indie in a way that misgendered the author if any of that makes sense. I need to remember where I am and what I'm saying because I certainly don't want to get banned and neither do I actively want to upset anyone.

duc748 · 09/03/2023 23:44

Nailed it, Crows.

DeanVolecapeAKAelderberry · 10/03/2023 06:23

Directly capitalistic also in that it is providing a nice new income stream for a pharmaceuticals industry that has taken a big hit in the fallout from the opiates scandal. I have wondered if this as one of the things that has led to the capture of the Irish establishment - pharma is one of the country's main industries and has plenty of opportunity for soft lobbying.

funnelfan · 10/03/2023 09:36

I’ma bit sceptical of the “big pharma” aspect to this. Big pharma companies chase the next billion dollar blockbuster drug. The people making money from generic hormonal treatments are the generic manufacturers. They’re a nice reliable income stream but really not enough to be campaigning behind the scenes for policy changes in government.

VicSynix · 10/03/2023 09:36

I'm pleased and surprised to report that the Guardian has finally noticed the existence of Hannah Barnes' Time to Think www.theguardian.com/books/2023/mar/10/time-to-think-by-hannah-barnes-review-inside-britains-only-clinic-for-trans-children

BinturongsSmellOfPopcorn · 10/03/2023 09:58

The Graun is clearly so stunned by the Barnes book that they completely forgot to include the middle part of this: www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2023/mar/08/what-fresh-misogynist-hell-new-maid-cafe-causing-ruckus?

Introduction, [no details, commentary or analysis whatsoever], conclusion.

(I note that the concluding 'It's nuanced' does not apply to Linehan.)

dolorsit · 10/03/2023 10:05

Introduction, [no details, commentary or analysis whatsoever], conclusion

To be fair, that seems to be the type of article the writer produces which are very feminist lite.

SinnerBoy · 10/03/2023 11:01

Some slightly more cheering news here:

www.theguardian.com/law/2023/mar/09/mother-unlawfully-denied-legal-aid-in-case-against-abusive-ex-uk-court-rules

My wife's friend is in a very similar situation, as she's been isolated from her son, who has been taught to hate her. The father is very weird, I only met him once.

He's taught the boy not to play with our daughter and a friend's daughter and that hitting them was no problem. (Neither of us were there, the mum told my wife). He's taught the son to be rude and disparaging to his mother and to hit and kick hers, if she wants him to do something.

She's been told she can't have legal aid, so this may change things for her.

There's other stuff, far worse, but I don't want to out her.

MavisMcMinty · 10/03/2023 11:18

I spent a couple of days working in a council-run nursery during the paediatric module of my nurse training, and there was one little boy (toddler really) who liked punching all the women who worked there in the face, because that’s what he saw his father doing to his mother every day. 40-odd years ago and I still feel chills at the memory. Monkey see, monkey do.

beastlyslumber · 10/03/2023 11:34

Just checking in before the thread gets away from me!

Currently in hospital on a women only ward. Quite a few women have come and gone this week and literally every single one of them has said how glad they are they don't have to be on a ward with men.

I just hope I'm out of here before I have to find out their policies on TW.

MavisMcMinty · 10/03/2023 11:52

Oh, hope all’s well and that you’re out of there soon, @beastlyslumber .

Hands you the calipers the special weighing of small things scales.

Waits.

Clears out crap under fingernails.

Rumages around for snacks in pocket.

Blgh, catnip flavoured dreamies.
