Scottish Parliament final debate on Gender Recognition Reform today

At some point after 2pm, in the Big Room (the Chamber).

www.parliament.scot/chamber-and-committees/whats-on-and-watch-live/whats-on#wm

Will be interesting to see how the Amendments go down, if they are all struck down as the ScotGov wishes - www.holyrood.com/news/view,gender-recognition-reform-crunch-vote-after-shona-robison-warns-msps-over-amendments

'the Scottish Conservatives have warned that the debate could lead to a "travesty of democracy" because a 15 minute time limit for each proposal will "shut down" discussion.'

'NUS Scotland acknowledges "all the misinformation and transphobic rhetoric" thrown at the bill, but says "the fight is not over".

President Ellie Gomersall says: "Non-binary people in Scotland are still not recognised in law, and more needs to be done to allow trans young people who are under 16 to change their legal gender.'

WTF?!

She was wearing a Merkin lovingly hand made by herself !!!! Labour were told their fortune as were SNP/ Greens!!! A banner was unveiled saying Privacy Dignity Safety in black paint on a white background & whistles were blown !!!

Theeyeballsinthesky · 22/12/2022 15:48

@fromdownwest its a very long story but wales is equally as captured as Scotland

the very short version is that this has been a long game played over many years starting out with the GRA in 2004 in the coalition government of 2010 with the Lib Dem’s championing it through women & equalities and then with stonewall working behind the scenes to influence law, finance, the nhs, the civil service & politicians

all of it messaged as “it’s only being kind/TW are the most oppressed people ever” coupled with the vast majority of people believing that TW are just a handful of genuinely dysphoric men who go through surgery to remove their cock rather than the 90% who retain a fully functioning penis

ArabellaScott · 22/12/2022 15:49

Ah, a protest, Rhannion! I see.

Section 35 incoming:

Has anyone posted this yet?

What article is this from please? I'd like to make a note of it for my next MP letter.

Whereareyourshoes · 22/12/2022 15:50

Oh stop the pretence that non binary people are anything other than male or female people who believe in sexist stereotypes for everyone apart from themselves.

And leave kids alone!

Apologies if it has already been posted, but does anyone have a link to the way each MSP voted?

I'd like to know exactly who to hold responsible.

thirdfiddle · 22/12/2022 15:53

I notice that a number of the politicians voting for it did so on the understanding that single sex exemptions still applied. Would that help put down any challenge made to JKR's Beira's Place? Or is the language they used sufficiently obscure to attempt to placate women without actually promising them a single useful thing?

bellinisurge · 22/12/2022 15:53

I think it’s just a statement, not sure where from though - it’s quite recent. it’s been posted on a few ticked accounts. twitter.com/mark_mclaughlin/status/1605948840195985408?s=21&t=64sSjuq7bhhK7_L5ZnRxow

New Sex Matters post:

"The Scottish Parliament is not free to redefine pounds and ounces, litres, grams or miles. Is it really free to redefine what a woman is?"

sex-matters.org/posts/updates/the-question-for-the-next-four-weeks/

An excellent piece by Sex Matters - thanks Resister.

Whereareyourshoes · 22/12/2022 15:57

I am sure there are some very dangerous characters working on this with links to many of our political parties. I hope Jo manages her article.

BlackForestCake · 22/12/2022 15:58

The SNP is having a big conference in March to come up with new excuses why they've made no progress towards independence. Target for protest?

I'd also be interested. I'll be writing to each of my MSP's who voted for this to state that I will never, ever give them my vote. I can't vote for anyone who cares so little for women and girl's safety and dignity.

ResisterRex · 22/12/2022 16:00

Thank you @Whatthechicken

Skyellaskerry · 22/12/2022 16:03

Sad and angry.

In catching up on some of the closing speeches, is the use of TxxF and CxS allowed in the Scottish Parliament?

Much conflation of gender with sex. I have made my own decision to call this out when I see it, in formal documents, etc.

Finally for Maggie Chapman there are no words. But not only for this issue, speeches like hers this afternoon damage the environmental cause I support, and, as the greens have sometimes had some of my vote under the Scottish PR system, never again.

Baldieheid · 22/12/2022 16:06

Pinched from twitter. Hope it's allowed but we'll see....

Fuck me, this is a great country, innit? I'm so deeply ashamed of it right now.

What can we do from England?

This terrible legislation affects us, too, and we should be making lives difficult

Rainbowshit · 22/12/2022 16:08

I'm beyond furious and upset. Shameful day in Scotland.
