Scottish Parliament final debate on Gender Recognition Reform today

At some point after 2pm, in the Big Room (the Chamber).

www.parliament.scot/chamber-and-committees/whats-on-and-watch-live/whats-on#wm

Will be interesting to see how the Amendments go down, if they are all struck down as the ScotGov wishes - www.holyrood.com/news/view,gender-recognition-reform-crunch-vote-after-shona-robison-warns-msps-over-amendments

'the Scottish Conservatives have warned that the debate could lead to a "travesty of democracy" because a 15 minute time limit for each proposal will "shut down" discussion.'

'trans children know who they are from 6 or 7'? Is she seriously suggesting GRCs for 6 year old kids?

I honestly think she maybe needs a wee break and a long rest.

Maggie chapman has absolutely no expertise about gender or child development.

Which is of course, why she can make
such stupid statements with such certainty.

Abccde · 20/12/2022 13:20

I can't comprehend Labour's position and I can't see how some questions / amendments would from Labour would deviate from UK Labour position. Keir Stammer has started to wake up a bit.

Support self id or not it is abundantly clear that thus is a bad law.

This will come back to bite them.

It surely doesn't require any expertise at all to understand that a 6 year old is not capable of making a decision like this.

I think we can expect MP's to understand laws they are proposing, and how they will interact with other laws.

While this makes sense, as a strategy it is entirely undermined by the fact that two-thirds of Scottish people don't support the GRR, and will no doubt breathe a sigh of relief if Westminster intervenes.

The SNP really are scoring a massive own goal with this one.

They’re kind of hoisted by their own petard at this point though. It seemed a great strategy (and was very popular with their extremist ‘friends’ in the greens) back when it was easy up paint everyone who might object as right wing bigots.

They arrogantly thought the Scottish public wouldn’t look to closely beneath the sparkly, progressive rainbow veneer, and would just accept that dissent was narrow-minded bigotry. That all seemed safe enough.

As things shifted, they were caught in their own extremist rhetoric with no easy way back. How exactly do they manage to hold their hands up and admit how badly they’ve misjudged it all? Especially when they need the greens to prop up their government.

You’d think.

What it would require is some actual connection to reality though. And chapman clearly lacks that. She’s got a pile of bullshit ideology in place of a grip on reality.

I’d like to be able to think this.

Sadly, it doesn’t always seem to play out that way.

greenhousegal · 20/12/2022 13:30

Are disability and other equality issues legislation up to date and functioning?

ResisterRex · 20/12/2022 13:33

GRCs for 6year-olds. Yeah sure. I mean they still believe in Father Christmas and have a lot of their milk teeth, and you couldn't leave them alone in the house at that age but why not?!?!

Good interview on R4 news just now my one of the SMPs who is tabling an amendment - I didn't catch her name properly, Michelle something I think.

TheYummyPatler · 20/12/2022 13:42

The guardian’s ‘explainer’ is making use of BBC survey data from February to assert ‘the Scottish public were generally sympathetic towards the need for reform’.

Interesting that they’ve chosen that survey, rather than any of the more recent ones. Can’t think why that would be?

Smurhee · 20/12/2022 13:43

Maggie Chapman says the Scottish Government are reforming the Gender Recognition Act 2004. Are they allowed to change an Act of Parliament unilaterally? It's not their Act, it's the UK's, surely?

Preference falsification and repeated attempts to pretend that the general public feels differently only work so far.

They then tend to collapse spectacularly, because they're bullshit edifices built on empty lies.

There's been a timetable published:

www.parliament.scot/chamber-and-committees/votes-and-motions/S6M-07321

That the Parliament agrees that, during stage 3 of the Gender Recognition Reform (Scotland) Bill, debate on groups of amendments shall, subject to Rule 9.8.4A, be brought to a conclusion by the time limits indicated, those time limits being calculated from when the stage begins and excluding any periods when other business is under consideration or when a meeting of the Parliament is suspended (other than a suspension following the first division in the stage being called) or otherwise not in progress:

Groups 1 to 3: 1 hour 45 minutes

Groups 4 to 6: 2 hours 30 minutes

Groups 7 to 9: 3 hours 50 minutes

Groups 10 to 12: 5 hours 30 minutes

Groups 13 and 14: 6 hours 30 minutes

Groups 15 and 16: 8 hours

Groups 17 to 19: 9 hours 15 minutes.

I think they're setting it up to be taken down by WM.

Yes

Maggie Chapman, unless she's a stunning actor, appears to be in your first category. Doesn't go far enough?

Watching this again from Maggie Chapman and it’s mind blowing.

She wants 6 and 7 year olds to able to get a GRC? Does Patrick Harvie come out with these statements too or does even he realise how creepy it makes the Scottish Greens sound?

Is it part of the Scottish Green plans to reduce population growth by sterilising as many kids as possible? Puberty blockers for anyone and everyone!

MichaelFabricantWig · 20/12/2022 13:55

TheYummyPatler · 20/12/2022 12:02

What is going on in the SNP is more difficult to figure out.

It’s an opportunity to pass laws that will
force the UK government to intervene in some way (because they are undermining UK law and policy in important ways) so they can scream ‘we need independence’ louder and louder. While polishing their ‘right side of history’/‘more progressive than England’ haloes at the same time.

This!

BernardBlacksMolluscs · 20/12/2022 13:58

They’re going to debate 19 amendments in 9 hours 15 minutes? Speedy!

Forth · 20/12/2022 14:01

Is filibustering allowed in the Scottish parliament? (I'm clearly very ignorant of processes)

ArabellaScott · 20/12/2022 14:15

I don't know, Forth. I don't remember anyone really overtly filibustering in the past.
