Standing for women - Portland rally cancelled over violent threats

Not quite sure what's happened - seems there were credible threats to women's lives over these protests.

Now it seems a few women went ahead and met up and were attacked. (Nobody seriously hurt as far as I can tell)

Hoping everyone is safe and well.

Brave, brave women standing their ground even after being assaulted.

Wish a single mainstream news outlet would cover it.

ArabellaScott · 26/10/2022 14:39

Indeed. And wish the police would be there to protect them.

In the circumstances, I think cancelling is the only sensible thing to do, sadly.

Does that first account belong to Kelly Jay Keen? Hasn't she been permanently banned from Twitter before? Twitter doesn't permit banned users to make new accounts.

Graham Linehan is back on Twitter too after being perma-banned and posts a lot of diatribes about transpeople, but noone is taking his posts seriously. He used to write jokes but now he is the joke.

Circumferences · 26/10/2022 16:15

MargaritaPie

As if you didn't already know, there are loads of fake Graham Linehan accounts that post things like "transwomen have small dicks haha" or whatever. None of them are actually Graham Linehan.

Likewise, Standing For Women is a collective. It's not just KJKM. So the Twitter handle won't be KJKM herself.

ArabellaScott · 26/10/2022 16:18

An 'antifa' twitter account posted pictures of bowie knives and called for people to bring pepper spray and other gear that suggested violence was on their minds.

Neither of those people are on twitter.
The standing for women account is a collective effort from Standing for Women members and every Graham Linehan account on there is a fake account. There are many of them.

GrinitchSpinach · 26/10/2022 16:34

Thanks for your concern for the women assaulted on camera, though, Margarita.

If you had clicked through the link, you would know.

Look, not run by Kellie-Jay Keen.

Is the theory here that they deserve death threats because they disobeyed the Twitter gods?

Holy heck.

ApocalipstickNow · 26/10/2022 17:06

I know your think the important thing here is that banned people aren’t back on Twitter, Margy, but actually
the

important

matter

is

women’s

safety

just ask if any of that needs explaining in more simple terms.

TheHarpySings · 26/10/2022 17:18

Oh look it’s Marg completely failing to engage with the issue at hand because once again the behaviour is indefensible.

Plasmodesmata · 26/10/2022 17:31

Squirrel!

Predictable though, isn’t it.

The first reaction is probably the best indication. And it was to tell us KJK and Graham were being naughty and defying a twitter ban!!!

Not that women were actively harmed.

No. They don’t count as we well know.

PurgatoryOfPotholes · 26/10/2022 18:06

At the risk of following the squirrel into the depths of the forest, what sort of violent fate does Marg think should be the lot of trans activists who have repeatedly reregistered on mumsnet? You know, Previously Banned Posters?

Or is it just violence against some sorts of women that can be waved away like that?

MargaritaPie · 26/10/2022 18:09

Being banned from Twitter also means the banned person can't have a new account at all, even if a different person is posting on the banned person's behalf.

And what is your view on the content though? I'm agog with anticipation

christinarossetti39 · 26/10/2022 18:16

I am also very relieved that no-one was seriously hurt and think KJK was right to pull out.

Hope that the women who were there are okay.

Hilarious! Do you not think the account has been mass reported before and yet, it is still there!!

Maybe, just maybe, Twitter already knows the account and has deemed it to be all good to stay. But obviously, Marg, you know best!!

FOJN · 26/10/2022 18:22

Portland seems to be held hostage by the violence of Antifa. Nobody in authority there seems to have the will or power to deal with them. I think KJK made the right choice, although I think it's only a matter of time before either a deranged TRA or Antifa member kills a woman standing up for her rights.

It's hard to believe I'm typing that with such a sense of resignation to the inevitability of that outcome in 2022.

But we should focus on the important stuff like who has been permanently banned from Twitter. I usually view Marge's comments with affectionate indulgence of the absolute batshittery but this evening I find them distasteful. Credible threats of violence against women standing up for their rights are not fucking funny.

nilsmousehammer · 26/10/2022 18:23

Bloody hell.

'violent threats and fear for women'

TRA - squirrel squirrel squirrel!

Can't you scrape up ONE normal conscience anywhere between the lot of you?

Delphinium20 · 26/10/2022 18:37

KJK doesn't deserve death threats. It's disgusting and I'm very sorry that all that work she put in didn't come to fruition.

I'm an American in a large US city and while I guess I have always accepted there may be gun violence here (or in rural areas where there are even more guns), the violence in general has risen across the country (not just Portland). Women in the US who care about women's rights were bold to march in the original Women's March but not all of them had police protection (there were permits in some cities, but not all), but we also know that smaller protests in large cities are rarely protected by police (police are overwhelmed, understaffed and violence is increasing). KJK won't be arrested for speaking her mind, so that's a plus in the US, but I hope she finds some other areas of the country to speak because there are places that would be safer, and she wouldn't need to release the location to the public until they were live. That might be her best strategy, IMO. I don't know if she applied ahead of time for a permit, but that can often trigger police to determine if they have the resources to show up.

Delphinium20 · 26/10/2022 18:39

Also, the police do kill civilians and reporters...so it's not like they are always trustworthy, but I highly doubt that KJK and her group seem dangerous to the police (most of them are white and middle aged and female)...so I'm sure a lot of the lack of police protection is they have bigger fish to worry about, like murders and carjackings w/ babies inside vehicles.

Delphinium20 · 26/10/2022 18:39

*harm reporters (sorry, meant to say 'kill civilians' and 'harm reporters').

PurgatoryOfPotholes · 26/10/2022 18:53

So, efiance of all rational thought, Marg has declared that KJK's organisation's official twitter, which is operated by a totally different woman, amounts to a circumvention of twitter rules.

As punishment for breaking twitter rules in your eyes, her physical safety is now legally forfeit. Is that right? She is no longer entitled to move freely in public without fear of violence and she deserves to be killed because... you... think... she's... breaking twitter rules.

Gosh. What do you think should happen to you if you get a parking fine?
