Who would you like to see come out as GC?

There are a few outspoken women, who I secretly daydream they’re GC. Top of my list would be Oprah. I’d be thrilled if she was a closet GCer. She would shut up all those people who spout crap like “TWAW just like black women are women” and other guff. But in reality, I doubt this will happen.

Also on my list, in no particular order is
Jenner Lawrence, Sharon Horton (I know she’s friends with Aisling Bea so it’s unlikely), Meryl Streep. I’ll add a few more names when I remember.

I think Carrie Fisher would have been GC, she was very smart and understood the issues women face.

And Victoria Wood too, who had a good handle on how size and class issues impacted woman (I miss VW, so incredibly talented).

Who would you love to see talk out about this?

I think Pink is - her silence around the issue speaks volumes, plus as PPs have said she has spoken about her lovely daughter being GNC but the 'T' word has never been mentioned.

Same for Angelina - Shiloh was even being transed by the media at one point.

Basically I think anyone who hasn't spoken out in support of the T, which is the easy option to score the points, is probably GC on some level.

Smilelesstalkmore · 05/10/2022 21:12

Pretty sure Harry Styles has appeared with a trans flag etc at some point, but I love the fact that he has never claimed to be anything other than a bloke who likes flamboyant clothes.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 05/10/2022 21:12

Dawn O Porter - but sadly she has she/her on her insta profile so I'm holding out no hope.

Queuesarasarah · 05/10/2022 21:15

Any royal woman, Judy dench (basically royalty)

mellongoose · 05/10/2022 21:16

French and Saunders.

Agree with this. I try not to harangue these people as I recognise this. Hopefully they will speak up when they are ready.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 05/10/2022 21:21

I constantly read some of these stories in a Charlie Brooker Screenwipe end of days kind of style. I would love him to do something GC, it would just be awesome. I don't know his views but I can't see how he wouldn't be GC.

His wife's likes were policed by TRAs and they didn't approve of who she was following. There is no way he doesn't see through this shit. I'd like to hope he's keeping his powder dry.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 05/10/2022 21:22

Well NZR is speaking at FiLiA.

Oh wow, hadn't seen that. Fantastic!

rabbitwoman · 05/10/2022 21:27

I really want Angelina Jolie to speak out. I can imagine she's protecting shiloh though, like a good mother should.

Madonna. But although I would hope she wouldn't give a fuck about a TRA pile on, I think she really really does.

And I would really love some of my pals to speak up a bit more, they will agree with me in private but say nothing when I am getting a pasting on social media from mutuals.

Same with work colleagues. I work in a skool and know most teachers agree with me. But there are posters up everywhere celebrating Sam Smith and elliot page, a dozen non binary students, two trans staff and a poster up describing a lesbian as a non- woman attracted to a non- woman.

Jenni Murray def is: www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/article-11259659/JENNI-MURRAY-Sir-Keir-betraying-women-Labour-fought-for.html

I'd love Charlie Brooker to do a GC Black Mirror episode.

Be good too, to see a list in one place, of all the public people we know are GC (aside from the big names maybe) Comforting to have a sense of number. It is so dystopian feeling to see so many people I have held in esteem for intelligence, wit, creativity, being so incurious.

Oooh a Black Mirror episode would be so good!

NotBadConsidering · 05/10/2022 21:34

I second Billy Eilish. She’s pretty awesome, sensible head on her shoulders and when she spoke out about the harms of porn, young people listened. She has over 100 million followers on Instagram.

I’d say Taylor Swift would have the same impact on her 220 million Instagram followers, but she doesn’t seem to be intellectually equal to Eilish.

Yes, the silence is deafening. I don't criticise her for not being more direct, I'm too afraid to out myself just yet. Maybe one day she will but she's so vocal about other women's issues I'll let her off! 😉

AlpineSue · 05/10/2022 21:40

Another one for Caitlin Moran

lady69 · 05/10/2022 21:48

Grace Dent
Sue Perkins
Florence Pugh
Kemi Badenoch

DameMaud · 05/10/2022 21:59

Kemi Badenoch totally is! Haven't got the link but her interaction with Caroline Noakes in parliament is fantastic. Will try to find the link for you

JaneorEleven · 05/10/2022 21:59

I’m loving a lot of these suggestions. Yes, yes to gay men saying it as it is. Members of the royal family, including Judy Dench haha.

Oh, and Phoebe Waller-Bridge would be up there on my wish list. Totally would see her being GC. And Lena Dunham too, I know she’s not everyone’s cup of tea, but she makes laugh.

But are they too young (I’m in my mid 50s so anyone under 40 is young), and still wanna be down with the cool kids?

Yes to Millie Bobby Brown. My tween daughters entire year group would sit up and pay attention.

I think Su Perkins definitely is. I remember her mentioning on a podcast that she has wondered if she had born later whether as a not particularly girly girl she would have been encouraged to go down the trans route.

Brilliant!

GingerPushkin · 05/10/2022 22:06

Steve coogan and Emma Thompson will jump on any bandwagon for woke cookies- no chance there

Kathy Burke, maybe? hard to get a read on her- she's usually so straightforward, but disappointingly quiet on this I think (unlike lovely James Dreyfus)

Julian Clary (I know, not female!) is surely sharp enough to get it?

French and Saunders- two clever ladies

PS Can I add a dishonorable mention? Not a woman, so a complete derail, but Richard Herring- I happened to see him slyly chucking Glinner under the bus on twitter- just to earn a bit of credit with his followers- something like "there, I've done it, I've blocked him, feel so much better", to rounds of "well done", "brave man" etc. I just found that particular incident so utterly craven. He could have quietly blocked, but no, he had to let his followers know what a noble man he is. Ugh!! There's a special place in hell for these smug, middle-aged wokebros. In the meantime, we see you.

GingerPushkin · 05/10/2022 22:12

just remembered i saw or read something by Emma Thompson where she was gushing about the various gender identities- I honestly don't think she's much of a thinker!

IcakethereforeIam · 05/10/2022 22:23

Ugh! I didn't know that about Richard Herring. He stood up (I think) for Jerry Sadowitz. I'm astonished about the atheists who have swallowed the GI guff. I'd like to see the clownfish woman, Alice Roberts...?

It's weird, I'm reluctant to nominate women because of the crap that women who actually have done this (Macy Gray, Bette Midler) have endured. Even as a thought experiment, I don't want to put anyone through that.

That said, AOC and the woman in charge of New Zealand.

ThatCheeseIsMine · 05/10/2022 22:38

HorseInTheHouse
Weirdly, a significant number of the aggressive kind of atheist (you know the type) are all in on gender ideology. I used to think the same as you, but now I think some people just like feeling superior and haranguing people. It's not always a sign of scepticism and critical thinking, that's for sure.

Urgh you're right, the "trendy science"/skepticism types who tend to misogyny and bandwagon-leaping. But as you say I don't think Stephen Fry is quite like that, he seems a genuinely thinking person, if not exactly a feminist.

Brian Cox is in the middle of all that popular science trend stuff yet he must have conversations with Gia about it too, so I can't imagine he hasn't thought it through.

It's fascinating to see who will either stand up to question a baseless, misogynist and homophobic ideology, or more quietly not go along with it, and who just laps it up (or cynically co-opts it). With acquaintances, colleagues etc as well as public figures.
