“hoisted by their own petard” never seemed more apt, if true

Marg dear, I am getting quite fond of you and your willingness to defend the indefensible.

This is long overdue and became inevitable after the Cass report, the closure of the Tavistock and the suspension of Helen GenderGP Webberley. The action against the LGBA will have pushed them further into the spotlight.

Or maybe it is all JKRs fault….another reason to admire the woman.

BirdinaHedge · 29/09/2022 17:35

Fantastic news.

But it's so sad. Some young people are clearly finding the pressure on their identity formation to be painful & sometime unbearable..

Think what Mermaids could have been:
a respectful helpful charity, brokering discussions between gender-questioning young people, their parents, and therapists.
Funding and sponsoring properly peer-reviewed research, investigating the phenomena of social contagion & ROGD,

Subsidising proper talking therapies where co-morbidities could be properly explored (eg autism, depression) and deeper root causes of body dysphoria (eg sexual abuse, bullying) also dealt with

Generally helping young people via the safe & scientifically-recommended "watchful waiting"

Instead, they are extremist activists, masquerading as a charity.

Hallellujah!

ImherewithBoudica · 29/09/2022 17:37

Good, about time.

I'm amazed this is JKR's fault too, that woman just gets so much done. Respect. I can't even get my house cleaned. I'm still waiting to discover which of her tweets caused global warming.

Motnight · 29/09/2022 17:39

Fantastic news.

AmaryllisNightAndDay · 29/09/2022 17:41

Well that's a nice big step in the right direction! And better late than never.

I know. She's the queen of multitasking

Anyway this thread (with screenshots) - about a mother securing her 10 year old puberty blockers from genderGP by following advice on their online forum within 3 weeks of joining - is an appalling indictment of their lack of care for children.

For anyone who missed this at the time.

Not even sweets, but ""sweeties": sounds silly but that makes it feel even more blatant. Changing the subject entirely, I've remembered when my mum used to warn me about men at the park I didn't know offering puppies...and sweets🤔

PastMyBestBeforeDate · 29/09/2022 17:44

Oh Pie how consistently you've applied innocent until proven guilty. I mean Marion Miller, how vehemently you applied that principle then. Oh wait, no you didn't. You hung her out to dry long before and after the police gave up trying to find something that might be illegal.

Navypoppy · 29/09/2022 17:45

That bloody JKR. I found a courgette
rotten on the vine today - bet it was her.

In all seriousness, given the seriousness of the allegations of harm against vulnerable children (and the imploding Tory party meaning we’re surely heading for a Labour government) this investigation cannot come soon enough.

The more the neglect of safeguarding children and the misogynistic and homophonic abuse of adults from the “trans rights” movement is aired NOW, the better. The harm in this movement needs to be fully in the public consciousness before an election. It is not kind to lead children down a path of sterility and lifelong medication, even if you give them sweets, balloons and puppy cuddles as you do it.

I’m afraid I misread the ‘walking ‘ on that tweet to put a n in place of the l . Must ring the optician in the morning.

Ugh thats revolting.

I am so glad this is happening now, shame it took so long AND I really do hope there is reason for criminal charges to be brought

This is an excellent post. This is what is needed and what Mermaids should be/should have been.

Well said @BirdinaHedge

Useful link for anyone who can provide evidence of Mermaids providing medical advice, medical clothes (binders) as in the recent case with LGB Alliance they unequivocally said they do not provide medical guidance "not an expert"

TheKeatingFive · 29/09/2022 18:01

Generally helping young people via the safe & scientifically-recommended "watchful waiting"

It was never about that though. It about was one woman's need to normalise what she'd done.

MargaritaPie · 29/09/2022 16:38

The commission has a duty to investigate concerns raised, yes. I'm presuming most complaints came from JK Rowling's followers after one of her recent tweets?

As with everything else, innocent until proven guilty.

I bet most of the complaints came from people who care about children & young people. It’s that simple

I think it's probably about 5 times a week that I ponder how it is possible that Susie Green isn't serving 20 years inside for what she did. Is this more or less than the MN average I wonder?

Igneococcus · 29/09/2022 18:04

Even Radio 3 reported it just now.

catandcoffee · 29/09/2022 18:11

Oh dear ...never mind..😉

flingingmelon · 29/09/2022 18:18

You have to be making a real mess of things before the Charity Commission get involved, just look at Kids Company.

Wow

KatMcBundleFace · 29/09/2022 18:19

Mermaids started as a support group for parents whose gender dysphoric kids attended the NHS Tavistock Centre. Early mermaids advice echoed that of Ken Zucker,
e.g. watchful waiting. "...please never forget: a gender variant child or teenager will not necessarily grow up to be a transgendered adult."

web.archive.org/web/20090626134957/www.mermaidsuk.org.uk/intro.html

Enter Susie Green.
Green took her own child to America for hormone blockers when they were aged 13. Hormone blockers were not available in the UK.
When her child was 15 she took them to Thailand and on their 16 birthday, they had the operation to invert their penis to make a neo vagina.
The operation was tricky because the hormone blockers had stunted the child's penis growth. Susie views criticism of this as a hate crime:
www.thetimes.co.uk/article/trans-lobbyist-susie-green-drops-hate-crime-claim-over-tweets-7wsl3q756

Soon after this case Thailand raised the age the operation can be carried out to 18.

Green led the charge to change Mermaids from a support group to a lobbying organisation, one that saw affirmation of gender identity as the only route. The medical pathway she imposed on her child is known as the Dutch Protocol. Even the doctors who started this pathway now say its being implemented incorrectly.

Mermaids became the tail that wagged the dog. They have encouraged gender non conforming children to believe that they are in the wrong body, they have groomed a generation. They have created a group of zealot parents who can never question medicalisation route.

The sooner they are shut down the better.
