“hoisted by their own petard” never seemed more apt, if true

"Silencing of critics by institutions
One fundamental aspect of predators committing child sexual abuse for years within organisations is the silencing of external criticism and internal whistle-blowing. "
How much down playing, cancelling, hounding and silencing of critics of gender ideology has there been?

Incidentally, the staff and trustees page of the mermaids website has disabled.

Here's an archived copy from a couple of weeks ago. Breslow never made it onto the Mermaids website list, but is on the Charity Commission's one.

Here's the archived Charity Commission one which someone posted upthread, I think:

It really does seem that Mermaids predominant area of expertise lies in doing exactly what feminists have been warning everyone they’re doing for years.

We’ve banged on, and on and on about their recklessness with regard to safeguarding. And now look.

fine, mermaids, fine- make it all the fault of the press, or feminists, or meanies or right wing moral panickers- fine. Just fucking DO something about it. Figure out why you keep getting caught out by data breaches, and safeguarding failures, and dodgy associations, and fix your processes. Children coming into your orbit deserve the best of care, because they’re very distressed and vulnerable and the very very least you can do is keep them away from exploitation, even if you won’t actually help them.

Yes, 100%.

It's so grubby and unnecessary. It can't be that hard to have robust systems in place to make sure you guard children's privacy, vet trustees and staff, refer to properly qualified medical authorities instead of disgraced suspended medics, refrain from sending out undergarments, don't promote harmful practises ... This organisation is running on around £1 million per year!

Susie Green pulls between 60 and 70k for running Mermaids. That's a decent salary. (I presume the one member of staff noted with this salary is Green, she's not named).

You’d think, wouldn’t you?

But it all does seem to be beyond them…and their cheerleaders, bafflingly, mostly do not give a shit.

Smilelesstalkmore · 04/10/2022 21:41

TRA Twitter is very quiet right now. Very quiet indeed.

PronounssheRa · 04/10/2022 21:49

Susie Green has locked her twitter account.

I'm sure it's entirely unrelated

KittenKong · 04/10/2022 21:50

Oh to be a fly on the wall…

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 04/10/2022 21:53

I've long been of the opinion that SG is not up to the job. Before she got the Mermaids job she worked for many, many years as the IT manager for the Leeds branch of the CAB, and I wonder how many of the skills the CEO of a large and fast-growing charity working with vulnerable children would be needed or developed in that job. She's not a graduate or an HCP. She's fanatical about the cause but what does she know about charity law? It's pretty clear she has no real understanding of safeguarding. Even her IT knowledge seems poor, given the data breach, which was caused by sheer sloppiness.

Yes, I would love to be there to hear how she makes it all the LGB Alliance’s fault. I’m sure it is…somehow…

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 04/10/2022 22:02

I've been trying to see if Susie Green has been deleting tweets, but archive.org is overloaded right now Hmm

I've just checked the fox botherer's twitter and. It a single mention...🤷‍♀️

Clymene · 04/10/2022 22:08

I don't really take much pleasure in saying 'See? We bloody told you'

But it's true.

Everyone said we were uptight squares.

This is what lack of safeguarding leads to.
This is what lack of due diligence leads to.

A massive charity led by someone who appears to have zero ability or understanding of both.

This is a national scandal.

Knittingmonster · 04/10/2022 22:10

Where are all those people who 3 days ago were praising mermaids to the skies? Surely if they really believed mermaids had done nothing wrong, we’d see the “island with mermaids” hashtag or similar?

bellinisurge · 04/10/2022 22:16

Had this already been mentioned? According to Twitter Wagamama describes Mermaids as a "previous partner ".
Drop it like it's hot.

Knittingmonster · 04/10/2022 22:17

wagamama really backtracked fast. Wasn’t it only last month they were “proud partners”?

rogdmum · 04/10/2022 22:18

SOME are trying to argue this is not the sort of thing a charity would fine.

<because clearly, doing a quick Google check would not occur to anyone>

“Ok Mermaids trustee..

Standard safe recruitment practice will not detect a lecture given at a dodgy conference X years ago.

What matters is that as SOON as you find out anything like this as a charity you first of all prevent harm (resignation in this case), then you consider if any offense has or could have taken place (did the person spend time alone with vulnerable beneficiaries). You then consider if police are required and consider whether a safeguarding report is needed to the Charity Commission.

But an interview, references, signed statements on equality, diversity, financial suitability, a DBS check etc. None of that will detect either someone who knowingly has something to hide or doesn't even realise it might be an issue.“

LizzieSiddal · 04/10/2022 22:31

This is a national scandal.

It worries me greatly that once Mermaids thankfully, come to an end, who will be waiting in the wings to offer “support” for venerable children and training for schools etc?

We can all see what will happen, government must step up and ensure that it doesn’t. It cannot be left to members of the public, yet again.

They could even say they've started doing it to pwn the T*#Fs. I don't really care if they start actually safeguarding out of spite or whatever, as long as it happens.

Eugh, that TRA is particularly disingenuous.
The "queer desires of children" is right there in the dudes LSE bio.
This wasn't buried deep.
