“hoisted by their own petard” never seemed more apt, if true

Gosh I wonder why someone with views such as these might get themselves into multiple positions of influence in organisations focused on guiding policy for children?

🙄

TheClogLady · 04/10/2022 19:25

Just thought I’d put these two tweets in a single image - 5 days apart…

The core issue is that women/feminists saw the safeguarding fail but were ignored FOR YEARS.

Moving forward we have to organise and get a political arm set up - I think the TWAW debacle has shown us that it is imperative that we need a non-partisan political group that prioritises the safety of women and children.

Our existing political parties have shown us, quite clearly, that this safety is not only NOT their priority, but is isn't even on their radar (just the women innit).

We need to change this.

I wonder if there is a mechanism for a cross party women's collective that has political clout?

BBC reporting on it too

www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-63137873

"We will be reviewing our processes and procedures in light of this event to make them even more robust."

More robust than a process by which you could be an IT expert, hire someone and not use the actual internet to check what they might have said or published (but at the same time run a youth forum with zero checks but I digress), then not add them to your trustee page and then discover what anyone can find out.

More robust than that?

OK then.

This makes me wonder if the journalists at the Times and Telegraph knew for a while about Jacob Breslow's links to paedophile groups and waited to make this public until after they had exposed a whole series of Mermaid's other safeguarding failures.

How on earth can parents trust the advice of a children's charity that was stupid enough to make a paedophile apologist one of its Trustees?

Best case scenario is that Mermaid's were too stupid to look into the work that he is publishing right now. It's not just about some event he attended 11 years ago. If anything his most recently published stuff has more red flags.

Wouldn't surprise me.

They are parents too. Our kids need protecting.

They needed to get this right. The lives and futures literally depend on it.

ImherewithBoudica · 04/10/2022 19:45

Mermaids still trying to spin it that it was just one isolated unfortunate incident years ago that they missed.

Live4weekend · 04/10/2022 19:45

I could never fathom why the rubber wanking man at the nspcc didn't get national attention and delegitimise them.

Or why there wasn't national outrage at the greens over Aimee Challenor.

I hope this doesn't just disappear without notice...

Vulnerable children.

And 'vulnerable teens with no parental support'.

PronounssheRa · 04/10/2022 20:08

If you wrap stuff up in a rainbow flag people are terrified to scrutinise or criticise. Sacred caste.

KittenKong · 04/10/2022 20:19

And wrap it in a trans flag and people it’s this x1000

rogdmum · 04/10/2022 20:20

I wonder whether Michael Brady is regretting his ill advised tweet from last week yet:

twitter.com/drmbrady/status/1574416112552476672?s=61&t=KypU6EoBoDwgfIDqwQqNgQ

“Thanks for the work you do @Mermaids_Gender to support trans, non-binary and gender diverse children and young people and their families.

I’ve seen many young people (and their parents) in clinic who have benefited greatly from the advice and support you give #LGBTHealth 🏳️‍⚧️🏳️‍🌈”

It was quite an extraordinary tweet for someone in his position as “National Adviser LGBT Health, NHS England”

Mermaids trustee quits over paedophile-group links www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-63137873

I can't quite believe this

Does anyone know why Breslow wasn’t listed by Mermaids? Was it simply because he was new .. or was he being hidden, as I saw someone suggest elsewhere?

They have always concealed the identity of some members of their staff and leadership team on the grounds that it would expose them to transphobia.

For some weird reason, it's never occurred to them that a children's charity which refuses to name some of its staff is a bit 🚩

To be honest, I think they forgot the children bit. They don't give a shit about safeguarding clearly and they're more invested in protecting the adults involved than the children they're supposed to be helping.

Clymene · 04/10/2022 20:43

Incidentally, the staff and trustees page of the mermaids website has disabled.

Unless, of course, it has.

Let's take a moment to appreciate how right Lisa Muggeridge was.

Yep. The Greens have learned absolutely nothing from the Challoner episode.

I'm not optimistic that organisations that are dazzled by incantantions of 'progressiveness' will ever grasp the idea of safeguarding. I mean, it's not difficult, but there seems to be something in them that resists it like wax resists water.

What's the excuse of all their celebrity backers? And the state funded grant funding that props them up?

Kids company collapsed with £3m of government funding approved despite public concerns and owing nearly £1m to HMRC. The charity commission didn't find any safeguarding failures though.

This is HUGE.

This isn't a single dodgy bloke. This is the flag waving trans kids charity supported by the royal family. With appalling safeguarding for the kids and a paedophile adjacent man on their board of trustees.

They are absolutely fucked.

Worth revisiting the wonderful Dr Em again with this piece: Charities & Institutional Climates Conducive to Child Sexual Abuse.

Those were rhetorical questions @Datun obviously. Wasn't expecting you to answer them. Grin

The whole house of cards is collapsing.

It really does seem that Mermaids predominant area of expertise lies in doing exactly what feminists have been warning everyone they’re doing for years.

We’ve banged on, and on and on about their recklessness with regard to safeguarding. And now look.

fine, mermaids, fine- make it all the fault of the press, or feminists, or meanies or right wing moral panickers- fine. Just fucking DO something about it. Figure out why you keep getting caught out by data breaches, and safeguarding failures, and dodgy associations, and fix your processes. Children coming into your orbit deserve the best of care, because they’re very distressed and vulnerable and the very very least you can do is keep them away from exploitation, even if you won’t actually help them.
