“hoisted by their own petard” never seemed more apt, if true

In Iran gay men have a choice between imprisonment or even capital punishment on the one hand, and sexual reassignment surgery on the other hand. This is rightly condemned, but when staff at GIDS tried to raise concerns that some of the parents they were seeing appeared to be homophobic and saw transition as the less awful option for their child, they were ignored or accused of being transphobic.

I think if parents knew they'd have more of a complete shit fit.

lurking KF/ learning about 4chan culture etc has certainly been a useful eye opener for me.

At this stage, letting your kid wander around the internet unsupervised is probably LESS safe than letting them wander the streets.

My husband uses Discord and he says it's a cess pit.

Kids should definitely not be using it.

Some receipts, as I believe they say. Possibly worth bookmarking/making your own copy:

I'm not on Twitter, but here's a receipt from Anna Friel, who co-produced and starred in ITV's Butterfly. In this article she says: "I can't even begin to thank Susie Green enough for all the help she gave me."

Josh Moon, owner of Kiwi Farms says the same!

The TRAs still don't see it on twitter, claiming that yes parents are the problem and yes children should have spaces without rules and moderation in which to share information withou their parents' knowledge. It's utter madness that these adults would see parents so negatively without any evidence that they didn't want to help their child. Let's see what the charity commission say.

I get the impression that there are a relatively small amount of TRAs doing a disproportionate amount of damage. (Apparently just 87 Twitter accounts, for example, fire off the majority of trolling against Meghan Sussex.)

So there may be even fewer doing the majority of the TRA-ing.

I don't think they like their mothers very much. And yes I do think it is very much a mummy problem, for various psychological reasons. There is a lot of anger going on here against women who are mothers, or otherwise in the motherland/grandmotherland age group.

Along with some of Mermaids' financiers in 2018, ITV, Florence Melly Primary School, plus jollies with Pinset Masons (gin tasting) and Spectra. The Metro also ran ads for Butterfly.

SG often bragged about appointments in the corridors of power at Westminster too.

Not to mention Merseyside Police and Scouting. I posted screenshots upthread.

We ought to have a list. Businesses, shops, celebs, law firms, banks… roll of dishonour

RedToothBrush · 01/10/2022 17:00

What gets me on those tweets is the one saying that mermaids were giving safeguarding training...

The lack of over sight is truly frightening.

Handsoffmyrights · 01/10/2022 17:12

Yes, I can't remember if that's the school where the infamous Jelly Baby 'safeguarding' 🤔 training took place, as Jan the trainer is there.

It's worth reminding ourselves of the "training" Mermaids gives. THere's a recording of it somewhere which demonstrates
a) the contradictory ideas & concepts
b) the stupidity of the trainer
c) the utter arrogance of the trainer, telling a participant who was asking questions "slow down" or "stop being so academic"

ie "stop thinking"

@Handsoffmyrights I think this is the article:
www.spectator.co.uk/article/is-sanity-returning-to-the-trans-debate-

Blister · 01/10/2022 20:44

This is the time to be stunning and brave.

This is the time when it takes sheer courage and guts to say "I was misguided".

This is the time when you have to rise above your fear to say "I didn't understand".

Who will be strong enough to say "we need to rethink what information is being distributed with our support and actually understand what its impact is"?

Who will be first to swallow their pride?

I'm guessing there's going to be doubling down and stating the ideology is right, just the execution was wrong in this instance.
and we'll be on this merry go round for a while. Because deep down, a lot of people realise their parents were not always right and can't deal with it. And it is the easier way out to not take any reputational damage.

MrsJamin · 01/10/2022 21:35

This is the time for us all to say "clearly children who identify as trans are vulnerable, need genuine support and help, as do their families also who need to know how to help them and protect them from harm." Obviously people disagree to the methods of "how" but why wouldn't even TRAs say "yes let's make sure we are keeping children safe- let's be responsible and accountable for the important aspects of how we care for vulnerable children". However all they do is say that scrutiny and due diligence are not needed or wanted, and that children are better off keeping secrets from their parents.
What's weird is that they compare kids needing to ring childline with children who contact mermaids, and then saying that parents should therefore be ok with not knowing either of these things. 🤯

ImherewithBoudica · 01/10/2022 22:16

This.

Any group supporting families needs to not be starting from an open prejudice against parents and framing parents to children as unhelpful problems who should be detached from, deceived and worked around with the help of online others. Who have never met the child in person, know nothing of the family, and will take no responsibility for what happens to the child as a result.

Any adults setting out to separate children from the primary care, bonds and protection of their parents and who seeks to get the child to take their trust away from their parents and instead place it in them? Is acting from ulterior motives and if they knew the slightest thing about safeguarding would realise they are on very, very dodgy ground indeed.

Mollyollydolly · 01/10/2022 23:22

JK Rowling is on an absolute no fucks given on twitter this evening. Couldn't admire her more. Ben Cohen getting both barrels.

Encouraging randoms to groom children on the internet - that is sick behaviour by sick people.

Interesting that the current Mermaids chairperson is a woman who took her 15-year-old son to Thailand for surgery to have his balls cut off and his penis inverted.

Please, Mumsnet, don't delete - because Susie Green herself provided this:

So you do all the things that you expect little boys to like but really, from as soon as she could express herself, she just wasn’t interested in anything like that.

I literally have no idea what 'you expect boys to like' and do think that you have to be pretty set on gender stereotypes to say something like that - I'd suggest that helping people move on from these old-fashioned ideas might be helpful. Mermaids seems to be entrenching them.
