“hoisted by their own petard” never seemed more apt, if true

I think there are clear parallels between this and the recent court case concerning the contributions tech. companies made to the tragic death of a child.

stealtheatingtunnocks · 01/10/2022 10:19

I would accept a social worker or paediatrician or judge or teacher criticising my parenting and stepping in to protect my kids from my bat shittery.

a collection of people who are trans, transed their kids, or are fundraisers? Who do they think k they are?

is love to see what Jackie thinks of what Susie a green has done in both mermaids and to Jackie. Never seen a statement of support, thiogh

ResisterRex · 01/10/2022 10:23

I agree, Icake. You can't not see it. IMO children just shouldn't be on the internet. It's plainly not safe, it is plainly designed to be addictive, and it's plain that absolutely no one has any interest in making it safe or non-addictive for children. It's totally at odds with the healthy development of a child's brain and sense of well-being.

They may have refused to comment for the article, but their website makes their position very very clear…

www.lw.com/Global%20Citizenship/Affinity%20Group%20Collaborations

”I wish I’d had access to Mermaids when I was younger and beginning my own journey of discovering and exploring my gender,” said Danni Davies, the London associate who developed the clinic with Mermaids and who serves as a global leader of the firm’s LGBTQ+ Lawyers Group. “As a nonbinary lawyer, I feel especially privileged to use my legal training in a way that benefits gender diverse youth. For a lot of people, the idea of changing your name can be quite daunting and difficult. But having a name that matches your gender identity is an amazing and important milestone.”

rogdmum · 01/10/2022 10:27

That was meant to quite ResisterRex’s earlier post about today’s Telegraph article!

ResisterRex · 01/10/2022 10:36

Interesting, thanks @rogdmum 😊

heathspeedwell · 01/10/2022 11:09

That Telegraph article is very thought provoking. It makes me wonder who would benefit from vulnerable young girls being completely alienated from their families.

Smilelesstalkmore · 01/10/2022 11:12

Yes, why shouldn't trans children be protected by the same levels of safeguarding as other children? Why should they be denied this just because they are trans/GNC?

SeagullSausage · 01/10/2022 11:35

Are there any comments on either of these 2 articles?

I have had so many tentative conversations over the years, trying to articulate and raise the concern I have around the TRA/Transchild/affirm kids in schools stuff and not got v far. I'm really hoping some of those wider family members are now seeing this unfold and joining the dots...

I agree tbh.

And I'm largely against censorship.

I think it comes down to this unfortunately.

It still stuns me what other parents allow their kids to do on the Internet without any thought about it

DH and I were early adopters and were on this social media sites and gaming sites and know the content. We find our ethos is very different from friends who never did this. They are completely oblivious and naive.

I think if parents knew they'd have more of a complete shit fit.

MrsJamin · 01/10/2022 12:14

The TRAs still don't see it on twitter, claiming that yes parents are the problem and yes children should have spaces without rules and moderation in which to share information withou their parents' knowledge. It's utter madness that these adults would see parents so negatively without any evidence that they didn't want to help their child. Let's see what the charity commission say.

TheClogLady · 01/10/2022 12:37

lurking KF/ learning about 4chan culture etc has certainly been a useful eye opener for me.

At this stage, letting your kid wander around the internet unsupervised is probably LESS safe than letting them wander the streets.

FatAgainItsLettuceTime · 01/10/2022 12:51

Agreed, if you don't have strict controls and oversight in place on your devices do t let kids use them to access the internet. My 8yo DD is currently doing her homework on my Mac, I can see from my iPad what browser she has open and what websites she is looking at. I have parental controls that mean she can't access any age restricted or inappropriate content, she has no access to any social media apps and paying for anything means having my thumbprint. It will stay that restricted for many years until I am content that she has the level of maturity needed to have free reign.

ResisterRex · 01/10/2022 12:52

I think so. At least most drivers would actively try not to hit a child wandering into the road, or pedestrians would query why a child is out alone and try to get them to safety, whereas these forums seem to be populated by those intent on harming children

Yep.

Plus more women around to keep an eye on creepy men.

and less opportunity for predators to pose as something they aren’t (eg pretending to be female, pretending to be a child of either sex)

100%

And be weary of online gaming. Trust me...

RedToothBrush · 01/10/2022 13:43

I think its quite clear Mermaids is run by adults who, in a best case scenario, don't understand the Internet and have no understanding of Internet culture or safety.

In a best case scenario.

MrsJamin · 01/10/2022 13:53

Yes and these adults at Mermaids believe that vulnerable children are definitely, without any qualification or vetting, better off with strangers and peers than their own parents.

Cuppasoupmonster · 01/10/2022 13:58

New article. Apologies if already linked

New to me! Looks like the press floodgates are open.

Gonna be interesting to see if these Mermaids can swim against the tide of public opinion (probably not tails made from glitter and false hope tend to dissolve in liquid)

ResisterRex · 01/10/2022 14:30

Cuppasoupmonster · 01/10/2022 13:58

We've already had "mounting concern". And "irresponsible free-for-all". Now it's "under-fire".

That’s always been the crux of it. The childless bloke with blue hair and a keen interest in ‘liberating children to be their true selves’ isn’t the creepy one, the parents are 🙄

If you believe in a world view that rergards heterosexual men and women as boring, and "queer" people as special, and fetishes as something to celebrate with the whole community, then pretty much by definition the parents have trans'd the kid aged 5 and started entering them in U10s drag competitions, or the parents are letting the kid down.

Ironic since one of the results of transition is that instead of a gay daughter you have a straight "son"

Its all a complete contradiction
