“hoisted by their own petard” never seemed more apt, if true

And yet they are not investigating Mermaids.

And yet they are not investigating Mermaids.

Did you get some sort of hand out with this line on it?

The Guardian spelled it out for the hard of thinking - this is a first step.

Obviously we all hope a investigation will follow and that it is very thorough because absolutely none of us want children/teenagers to come to any harm.

Right?

I noticed yesterday that the Grauniad had changed the photo to show an upper female torso from a side angle, wearing a very close-fitting sports bra.

An improvement upon the first one of the toned midriff, but it’s still not a breast binder, in an article ABOUT breast binding.

Come on, the Guardian! You’ve endorsed gender ideology all along; can you please be more honest and a little less concerned about your readership’s sensitivities?

JK Rowling is on an absolute no fucks given on twitter this evening. Couldn't admire her more. Ben Cohen getting both barrels.

Ricky Gervais is on fire today too…

twitter.com/rickygervais/status/1576155017374859264

What about an actual woman who doesn’t ‘identify as a women’ because she doesn’t have to because she actually is one?

(I realise this is off topic, but it’s not worth a thread, and too good not to share)

Back on topic, Mermaids are a shocker. The Good Law Project and LOJ et al are having a good old froth over on the bird site, look to sue papers for reporting. Lol.

MrsJamin · 02/10/2022 07:13

The guy Ricky is replying to is a guy who doesn't talk to many women about this. I definitely don't identify as a woman, in as much as I don't identify as white, or British, or a human being. These are all things that I am, irrespective of my feelings or mental state. Bloody love Ricky on this, he 100% gets it. That minute or so from his latest Netflix show said so much in so little time.

Needmoresleep · 02/10/2022 08:39

I note that in his profile the guy Ricky is replying to claims to be an amateur vexillologist.

Google tells be vexillology is flag designing. There is lots of scope to practice within the gender movement. I wonder if he is behind the awful rainbow/trans/BLM one.

FannyCann · 02/10/2022 08:55

Oh thanks for the explanation Need.

I thought it was a joke related to being vexatious or enjoying stirring up trouble or something. Google really is useful isn't it!

I went to look at the new picture.

this is a type of binder, it’s made from fabric similar to a power-girdle (the kind you have to roll on and then pee through a hole in the gusset because it’s so bloody tight you can’t just take it up and down in a cubicle)

in this Jammidodger video a binder of the type in the Guardian image is described as ‘hellishly tight’

m.youtube.com/watch?v=aJkHB3O6o28

screen shot of the top comment on the video - interestingly the top commenter seems to have desisted from their trans identity now…

@TheClogLady yes, that’s the photo.

Thanks for linking the video by Jammie Jamie: I stopped watching him after a minute or so as the twice mentioned “hellishly tight” made me feel sick. You couldn’t pay me all the money in the world to allow my pubescent DD to wear this medieval torture garment. Who the actual fuck manufactures these things?

Wild that someone actively promoting the things can refer to them as ‘hellish’ yet according to trans Twitter Mumsnetters are the baddies for not wanting strange adults to post them to our daughters behind our backs!

Chersfrozenface · 02/10/2022 09:59

Unless of course "hellishly" can now be used by some people to mean just "very" or "extremely" and not necessarily with negative connotations.

AmaryllisNightAndDay · 02/10/2022 10:00

As for comparisons to sports bras - I bought a sports bra that was a bit too tight (the fitter didn't take my chest expansion into account when I breathe!) and bloody hell it was agony when I tried to exercise in it. Even getting out of it afterwards was a struggle. Never again. I don't want to imagine what a real binder must feel like. Or how tempting it must be once you're in it to not wrestle it off again and just sit around and try not breathe instead.

You're supposed to wear well-fitting supportive underwear while your breasts are developing, not restrictive underwear.

Well, if man can mean woman I suppose it’s possible that hellish can mean heavenly? However a scroll through the comments suggest ‘hellishly tight’ is, for once, an accurate description…

Jesus. They should be illegal for minors unless prescribed by a doctor.

Hopefully this publicity will worry politicians enough to do something about them. Not just stop mermaids posting them out.

rogdmum · 02/10/2022 11:03

I think they should be banned for the under 18s. Or at least not available unless a clinician signs off on the use of one and then regular check ups are required.

TheClogLady · 02/10/2022 11:17

I agree rogdmum - they aren’t fashion items, and there is too much potential for harm.

At the very least make them prescription only and add occupational therapists to the multidisciplinary teams that Cass has proposed.

Why would a doctor prescribe one? Do they have any medical purpose?

KittenKong · 02/10/2022 11:59

It’s cosmetic and the opposite of medical.

AutumnCrow · 02/10/2022 12:04

The Charity Commission's investigation of Mermaids gets a mention today in Sonia Sodha's important article in the Observer.

Good point. I was thinking that if someone's gender dysphoria was so out of control they might help. But of course, I don't subscribe to that! I subscribe to talking therapy to determine the cause.

Brilliant thread my Malcolm Clark on unnecessary surgery and pseudo science of the trans movement.

ResisterRex · 02/10/2022 12:14

Being in between sizes, and finding getting to the shops to try things on difficult (also not knowing if men will be in the changing rooms!), I've had to buy a bra which is too small but needs an extender. Which I'm struggling to find.

Anyway. Wore it yesterday and it seemed OK-ish but not mega comfy. Wore it again this morning and had to take it off as is just too tight under the bust.

How on earth young girls are suffering binders which can break ribs and mean you can't breathe, is totally beyond me. I can't even fathom what distress they must be in, to put up with it.

Thanks for this, @RedToothBrush

It's a very difficult read emotionally (it has actually upset me); but an excellent read intellectually.

What an absolutely heartbreaking, criminal mess.

Smilelesstalkmore · 02/10/2022 13:36

Owen Jones has 100% changed his Twitter profile pic to that library alien in order to try and deflect away from the shit going on with Mermaids.

The desperation really is becoming palpable.

Smilelesstalkmore · 02/10/2022 13:41

Lol at Joanne telling Benjamin Cohen that Pink News is a 'click bait comic'. I love it when she goes all no fucks given!
