The visual gag of Jordan scanning phallic vegetables is great!

I liked all the knowing little micro- aggressions - the clip in the car and whether it was offensive to Jordan and the person of diminutive stature for the driver to pull their seat forward to give them leg room- yes it was if he did but also offensive if he didn't.

GertrudeKerfuffle · 26/08/2022 11:46

I've not heard of Jordan Gray before but those clips are funny. I will see if I can find that sitcom, I like comedy set in supermarkets for some reason 😁

TheClogLady · 26/08/2022 12:12

Obviously nothing really compares to the genius of Victoria Wood but the supermarket scenes put me in mind of Dinnerladies.

TheClogLady · 26/08/2022 12:17

I’ve just seen that Jordan Gray’s Edinburgh show is called ‘Is it a Bird?’ 🙊🤣

A bit of knowing self deprecation in comedy is great for making connections and giving people permission to laugh. It’s a nothing thing I associate with Victoria Wood.

Datun · 26/08/2022 12:35

That Jordan Gray is very funny.

I'd be shocked if they didn't totally get where women are coming from and acted accordingly in terms of sex segregation.

Datun · 26/08/2022 12:40

oh, now I've seen the clip of the toilets 🤣

TheClogLady · 26/08/2022 13:06

woah. Jordan sings too.

must be well annoying for Jen Ives - there you are, trying to pass off your failed Edinburgh show as ‘transphobia’ and then another trans comedian gets nominated for a shelf-load of awards, has an ITV sitcom commissioned, a radio 4 contract awarded, a load of 5 star press reviews and even the evil tervern Mumsnetters are complimentary.

that would well do your head in, wouldn’t it? And we weren’t even really talking about trans comedians until Dadjoke started wanging on about Ives.

What’s next? A a photo of Elaine and Jordan sharing a bottle of Prosecco? Jordan wins ‘Best Show of the Fringe’ and gives the trophy to Elaine? Elaine is cast as a side character in Jordan’s sitcom? 😆

Yeah, you're gonna have a hard time being a trans comedian, when someone like Jordan has gone all in.

Accused of not chasing a shoplifter a shoplifter "I'm an ex man, not one of the X-men!"

Taking a leak "...don't you just hate it when you get splashback on your tits".

His colleague turning on him in the car "can we please just get to work before you accuse me of another hate crime".

😁

I wonder how Jordan is treated by the extreme activists. Jordan says the quiet bits out loud and connects with a wide audience in doing so.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 26/08/2022 13:16

I might find bits of the comedy a tad uncomfortable and near the knuckle, but I did laugh. I find lots of comedy uncomfortable, it's natural. Jordan Gray seems refreshingly self aware and sees the abundant humour potential of both gender identity and how people react to it, and clearly has more talent in their little finger than Ives, with no need to emotionally blackmail people into supporting them.

That's a good way of putting it.

I just had a brief lesson to Jen Ives. The problem is they're just not funny. It's not even the material. They just can't deliver it. There's a lot of truth in the saying it's the way you tell 'em.

AmaryllisNightAndDay · 26/08/2022 13:43

Thanks for the Jordan Gray suggestion! I enjoyed the clips.

There's something Jordan Gray has in common with Elaine Miller - their comedy styles are totally different but they're both very willing to make themselves the butt of the joke. And that's very endearing and it gets their humour and their points across.

IcakethereforeIam · 26/08/2022 13:46

Jordan seems quite charismatic, Jen Ives...not so much.

Yes, exactly.

It only takes one clip to see the difference between the two.

ArabellaScott · 26/08/2022 14:30

Thanks for the intro to Jordan Grey. Funny, with a bit of bite and substance.

Wow, what a performer!

I think some of the difference at least is that Gray has worked at it. Better, more polished material. Just compare the titles, even! And much better delivery.

The first thing on that godawful clip of Ives is them taking the mic & saying “how are ya” & smiling in a somewhat engaging way, introducing themselves... And then, for no comic payoff, barking “No!” at the audience.

I’m not even sure it was intentional - Ives cackled but nobody else did. Not a good start. it reminded me of the sort of thing my 8 year-old brother used to do on tape. (Though to be fair he could belch at will & often did so with good comic timing).

With Ives’ fans including a TV producer who said he’ll commission Ives just to own the Terves & the fabulist @DadJoke gets his tale from who deleted his - ahem - contradictory versions of what happened while saying he stands every word offering to buy people tickets, it’s not clear Ives is going to bother to put the work in. Why would you?

i was just watching Paul Merton talking about his first piece (the policeman on acid) and how he worked on it for months & got about 3 1/2 minutes of material. But it was brilliant, went over marvellously, he got invited back - and had to do it again because that was all the material he had.

That’s work. Ives is just a grifter.

RhannionKPSS · 27/08/2022 16:04

Just a reminder that Viva your Vulva has only two more shows to go at the Edinburgh Fringe this year.

Needmoresleep · 27/08/2022 18:41

Tickets for the show in 20 minutes. DH let me pick what we are watching and I have not explained why this. Have seen 3 very good shows so far today so he is relaxed. So if anyone sees a woman in a red top, and a man with an equally red face, do say hello.

(It was sold out yesterday.)

Ereshkigalangcleg · 27/08/2022 18:44

Enjoy!

2Rebecca · 27/08/2022 18:50

Delighted it was sold out yest. Have fun. I loved it and took a friend who is sympathetic but hasn't been to any meetings etc. she thought Elaine was great. Get one of the origami fanny fortune tellers if there are any left

@IcakethereforeIam
Pretty much what I was going to say after watching Ives. They need to go to a stand-up comedy class to start with, be humble enough to learn from professionals and then put the work in to get better at writing and performing jokes. Talent levels vary but nobody can get away with coasting along. Lazy. That was my overriding impression of Peak Trans from the clip.

IcakethereforeIam · 27/08/2022 20:10

Yup, Ives, from what I've seen, just ain't funny.
