Owen Jones sent revolting homophobic abuse

Owen Jones has posted some terrible homophobic abuse he received on Twitter. It’s ugly stuff. Apparently he knows who sent it (the person made no effort to hide her identity) so I hope he has informed the police.

He’s blaming it on GC ‘anti-trans’ ‘radicalisation’ anyway.

Maybe we could all list below how many times we’ve sent people abusive, threatening messages online (of any sort)?

I’ll start: 0

Damn… where did my zero go?

RoseslnTheHospital · 22/05/2022 18:50

I see what you're getting at but it won't make any difference to what Jones believes about women who disagree with him. I think the only possible response is to thoroughly condemn the actions of the woman who sent the abuse, without any qualification.

tabbycatstripy · 22/05/2022 18:53

I haven’t qualified it. Qualification would be like, ‘It’s wrong but if he didn’t...’

I called it revolting and ugly.

Online messages - 0

I did send an ex of mine a text calling him a ‘lying, cheating coward’ once, about 4 years ago… does that count if it was an accurate description?! 🤔

ScreamingMeMe · 22/05/2022 18:55

How disgusting. Nobody deserves to be abused like that. Of course everyone on here and most GC people (a lot of whom are part of the LGB community themselves) condemn this.

Theeyeballsinthefuckingsky · 22/05/2022 18:56

That’s awful! It’s a good thing that women don’t get sent appalling rape & death threats on line when they disagree with the likes of LOJ

oh wait

Theeyeballsinthefuckingsky · 22/05/2022 18:57

obviously LOJ shouldn’t be sent homophobic abuse but somehow I doubt GC women are behind it

nepeta · 22/05/2022 18:59

I have never sent abusive or threatening messages to anyone, not online, not by any other means either. On the other hand, I have received threats and abusive messages, almost all focused on my sex.

TastefulRainbowUnicorn · 22/05/2022 19:00

The woman’s account has been dormant for months, and suddenly started sending vile abusive messages to a variety of people last night. As Owen points out himself, the previous posting history is all completely innocent and the woman’s name, face and workplace are right there on the account. The account is not yet locked despite the attention it’s getting.

The messages are vile and I condemn them utterly. I hope Owen Jones did his due diligence as a journalist (lol) and confirmed they actually came from the person he sicced his flying monkeys on, because it looks like a hacked account to me.

tabbycatstripy · 22/05/2022 19:01

Leni - nah, that’s fine!

RoseslnTheHospital · 22/05/2022 19:03

Ah, I'm not suggesting you were qualifying it @tabbycatstripy, just that no one else should try to.

tabbycatstripy · 22/05/2022 19:05

Of course not. Like someone has said, if this isn’t a hacked account the police should charge someone. It’s appalling behaviour.

All abusive and threatening messages are vile, homophobic messages are vile, and I condemn them all.

It feels so odd to write that down as I take it for granted. I want civil debate and courteous conversations which see all participants as human beings (assuming no aliens from outer space are involved, then different respect terms should be used).

Exactly.

Simonjt · 22/05/2022 19:13

Unfortunately its a standard thing, our rugby club is sent vile abuse on an almost daily basis. Online platforms are generally crap at blocking/deleting accounts of people who send abuse/threatening messages, and keyboard warriors enjoy taking advantage of that.

Circumferences · 22/05/2022 19:16

I don't think this thread is going to achieve anything, it's a bit pointless?

Someone hacked an account to make it look like people send homophobic tweets to OJ...

Just ignore them. It's all ridiculous.

tabbycatstripy · 22/05/2022 19:17

People don’t always post to “achieve” anything, Circumferences. It’s just a public interest thing.

Somanysocks · 22/05/2022 19:24

No idea what was posted as am not on twitter but doesn't LOJ thrive on verbal fisticuffs?

Struggling to find sympathy.

tabbycatstripy · 22/05/2022 19:28

It was really bad.

But as I said on the other thread, wouldn't reporting it to Twitter and / or the police be a more appropriate response than publishing it widely? If genuine troll he's just fed it a lot of attention. If it's some poor woman who has been hacked he has now sent a million followers after her and potentially got her fired from her job.

donquixotedelamancha · 22/05/2022 19:35

Like someone has said, if this isn’t a hacked account the police should charge someone. It’s appalling behaviour.

If it isn't a hacked account then I'm sure they will, it shouldn't be hard to find them from what he describes. Rightly so, terrible behaviour.

TYOJ wants a debate about who 'radicalises' people to be abusive on the internet. I have two thoughts on that:

  1. I don't think it's constructive to use the same word for verbal abuse as we do for terrorism.
  1. I think the biggest responsibility (apart from the perpetrators) is with internet personalities who make money by demonising their political opponents and spreading hate, to gain attention. In the UK that would be the likes of Katie Hopkins or Owen Jones.

Its really important that homophobia, racism etc is shown to the public, victims of abuse should never be encouraged to hide the abuse that happens to them. He hasn’t said that he hasn’t approached the police, I’d also be impressed if a million followers were after her considering he hasn’t shown who the person/twitter user is.

If we are to follow OJ''s own example then aren't we meant to declare it was made up and ask for the other sides version of events?
