Owen Jones sent revolting homophobic abuse

Owen Jones has posted some terrible homophobic abuse he received on Twitter. It’s ugly stuff. Apparently he knows who sent it (the person made no effort to hide her identity) so I hope he has informed the police.

He’s blaming it on GC ‘anti-trans’ ‘radicalisation’ anyway.

Maybe we could all list below how many times we’ve sent people abusive, threatening messages online (of any sort)?

I’ll start: 0

It’s worrying (if not surprising) that so many people want her reported to her employer and not the police. An employer might be more inclined to fire someone summarily for something they didn’t actually do, whereas the police would investigate who actually had access to her account. The messages obviously meet the bar for criminal conduct.

Has Owen ever, once, condemned the activists on his side who posted pornography in a Twitter thread JK Rowling had asking for children's pictures?

Has he ever condemned the thousands of graphic threats of rape, sexual torture and murder sent to feminists by trans activists?

Did he ever condemn the physical assault on Maria MacLachlan by a trans activist and the attempted physical assault on Julie Bindel?

Did he condemn the trans activists in France who hanged a woman in effigy?

Did he condemn the protesters who let off smoke bombs at a WPUK meeting? Or who issued bomb threats to a WPUK venue?

Did he condemn the trans activists who held up signs saying "Suck my dick, you transphobic cunts” outside the Filia conference in Portsmouth where women were sharing their stories of sexual abuse?

I thought not.

The woman’s account has been dormant for months, and suddenly started sending vile abusive messages to a variety of people last night. As Owen points out himself, the previous posting history is all completely innocent and the woman’s name, face and workplace are right there on the account. The account is not yet locked despite the attention it’s getting.

The messages are vile and I condemn them utterly. I hope Owen Jones did his due diligence as a journalist (lol) and confirmed they actually came from the person he sicced his flying monkeys on, because it looks like a hacked account to me.

Oh, dear.

Unacceptable that he's getting abuse.

All sounds a bit odd.

Of course he didn't. Smoke bombs by Grenfell tower.

Obviously a person who is genuinely gender critical wouldn't use homophobic abuse. Obviously it's reprehensible.

However OJ doesn't listen to the wrong kind of women and he forcibly ascribes opinions to us that we don't hold.

It is entirely irrelevant to him what we think. He's a man in a patriarchy and he knows it.

In the comments to one of Owen's tweets several suspected...

drum roll...

Mumsnet!
to be the cause of the radicalisation leading to those horrible tweets.

Lynnthesearesexnotgenderpeople · 22/05/2022 21:24

This.

He is a man telling us what we should be thinking, and if we don't think as he says we should, then he still tells us what we think (even when that's not actually what we think).

Women can't possibly have opinions that either he holds himself, or that he has ascribed to them.

I hope the police find who is responsible for the abuse he has received.

ControversialOpening · 22/05/2022 21:24

Horrible abuse.

“I’ve seen some quite lengthy and angry threads on here with lots of abusive things to say about Owen Jones…”

Was any of it homophobic? Did any of this abuse use that sort of language? I don’t recall reading anything like that on here.

Schnoobly · 22/05/2022 21:25

don't know any woman who obejcts to men wearing make-up etc

@ThinkingaboutLangClegosaurus you might need to get out a bit more… there are countless threads all over mn denigrating men for makeups, clothing or hairstyles that are considered feminine.

OJ refers to “the anti-trans movement” in those tweets. So assuming GC is not anti-trans, then it’s not GC feminists being referred to.

Lynnthesearesexnotgenderpeople · 22/05/2022 21:28

He hasn’t said that he hasn’t approached the police, I’d also be impressed if a million followers were after her considering he hasn’t shown who the person/twitter user is

He put in enough information about her account that his followers were easily able to track her down and report her to her employer.

MagnoliaTaint · 22/05/2022 21:28

Well. Read the tweets, read the other stuff from the account.

That looks to me like a really obvious hack. But presumably Owen has checked, before setting his 1million followers on this one woman, yes, and getting her employer contacted?

Because as we know, he's never been told off for bullying women.

Lynnthesearesexnotgenderpeople · 22/05/2022 21:30

OJ refers to anyone who doesn't wholeheartedly agree with males in female prisons, refuges and sports, and pumping kids full of powerful puberty blocking drugs as part of 'the anti-trans movement', and has done for a long time. Surely you are aware of that by now?

Ereshkigalangcleg · 22/05/2022 21:30

TYOJ wants a debate about who 'radicalises' people to be abusive on the internet.

No he doesn't, he wants to spout off about bad terfy women and get attention for it, while blocking, ignoring, smearing anyone who disagrees with him.

nepeta · 22/05/2022 21:39

It is rather horrifying to see the new mob justice in operation. The woman's employer has already been contacted and who knows what other things have been done. But as far as I can tell, it hasn't been even verified yet that the account wasn't hacked.

There are tremendous problems with this new 'justice' of canceling people: There is no defense, the sentences are almost always out of proportion to whatever someone did, and there is no appeal process, either. I know of cases where someone with the same name as a person who was hated online was severely harassed. I wish people with large following such as OJ didn't do this. It's extremely unhealthy as there are proper channels of making a complaint.

tabbycatstripy · 22/05/2022 21:40

‘OJ refers to “the anti-trans movement” in those tweets. So assuming GC is not anti-trans, then it’s not GC feminists being referred to.’

Excellent, is he differentiating between the two as he should now?

Yes. The tweets sent to OJ were awful, and he should have contacted the authorities.

I find the gleeful witch-hunting - of what could be just some random woman whose account has been hacked - equally awful.

Who'd have thought it. A man of the workers like Jones getting a woman reported to her employer after her twitter account was hacked. Even if they acknowledge that it wasn't her, she is going to be in huge trouble for linking her account to her workplace and they may discipline her for that.

I hope she's the member of a union.

Of course he hasn't. Well not before firmly tying it to gender critical women in the minds of his 1M followers. He knows fine well it's a hack but it's too good to waste.

Kys and the f-word? Please. It is clearly a hack, written in the language of the American and terminally online.

Redshoeblueshoe · 22/05/2022 22:13

I'm blocked by LOJ and I've never interacted with him on Twitter.
The fact he blocks all GC women tells me - the account was hacked.

Lynnthesearesexnotgenderpeople · 22/05/2022 22:13

Jesus Christ, they are properly going after her now. Apparently part of the 'evidence' that she wasn't hacked was that she sent a happy birthday tweet to some bloke who posted a couple of pro Elon Musk and Brexit tweets - this clearly shows she is far right and must have sent all this stuff herself. HmmThey have been looking on her Facebook and all sorts.

Plus loads of tweets to her employer calling for her to be fired because she is 'unsafe' and all sorts.

These people are actually unhinged, it's terrifying. This is really starting to look like a woman caught in the crossfire of a load of men slinging shit at each other.

I really hope that if she was hacked, her employer publicly says so.

Lynnthesearesexnotgenderpeople · 22/05/2022 22:15

Sorry I said, 'and all sorts' twice there - it really is though! I am finding this really unsettling.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 22/05/2022 22:21

I've seen very unconvincing screenshots purporting to be British gender critical feminists before.
