Owen Jones sent revolting homophobic abuse

Owen Jones has posted some terrible homophobic abuse he received on Twitter. It’s ugly stuff. Apparently he knows who sent it (the person made no effort to hide her identity) so I hope he has informed the police.

He’s blaming it on GC ‘anti-trans’ ‘radicalisation’ anyway.

Maybe we could all list below how many times we’ve sent people abusive, threatening messages online (of any sort)?

One would have thought that the critical thinking and assessment of primary and secondary sources required as part of reading history (at the University of Oxford, IIRC) would have gone some way towards filling that gap.

Also, he's rapidly approaching middle-age, but he's not that old. He grew up with the internet. Why has he no 'ear' for the abrupt shift in tone of a hijacked social media account? It happens all the time.

Are the details about the account being hacked and so on in any way public? I'm trying to get my head around this and about how people know what happened.

Exactly. I've not had the privilege of an Oxford education nor am I a journalist. Add in that I still don't get how twitter works yet I was able to deduce pretty quickly that this account was hacked. I would go further and say I was quite sure those hate tweets were written by a man but that's purely an instinct.

Yes but, more importantly, he identifies as a journalist. So what if he has no training and doesn't behave like a journalist 'should'? He's bravely expanding that bandwidth of journalism.

The place the woman works has posted on Twitter. Another woman has posted saying that the account holder said she had a new boyfriend on Facebook the day before the horrible messages were sent and that her ex had deleted his Twitter and 'sanitised' his social media.

That's pretty much what he tweeted yesterday.

Really? Fucking hell sometimes I hate to be right

Even Katy Montgomerie says its pretty obvious the account was hacked! How embarrassing for OJ, he is supposed to be a journalist and an avid Twitter user and he can't even spot a hacked account from 50 paces (or maybe he could but didn't give a shit).

I haven't seen any apology from him yet, I won't hold my breath.
