Owen Jones sent revolting homophobic abuse

Owen Jones has posted some terrible homophobic abuse he received on Twitter. It’s ugly stuff. Apparently he knows who sent it (the person made no effort to hide her identity) so I hope he has informed the police.

He’s blaming it on GC ‘anti-trans’ ‘radicalisation’ anyway.

Maybe we could all list below how many times we’ve sent people abusive, threatening messages online (of any sort)?

I’ll start: 0

I've got an old twitter account somewhere that I set up years ago and never used. I tried to get back into it the other day but couldn't remember the email I used, or the name I gave it, or basically anything, so couldn't. It worries me that if someone managed to hack it and start sending abuse I'd find it difficult to do anything about it.

Yes, that is quite worrying. I de-regged from Twitter years back but I believe the account is still in some kind of purgatorial cyber holding-pen. I can't access it; I can't delete it.

potniatheron · 23/05/2022 12:46

All online abuse is unacceptable. Sadly Owen has stood by for years whilst GC women got the worst of misogynistic abuse online. I'm sorry that he's recieved this abuse but using it as a weapon in his crazy psychodrama war vs 'terfs' which he seems to be obsessed with (to the detriment of his career) is not on. Neither is doxxing the woman. And specifically singling out Mumsnet (a women's space, so obviously suspect, eh Owen) is creepy.

It's only a few days ago that Owen was trying to speak to the schoolgirls who allegedly bullied a GC girl out of school. Now he's doing this instead, holding up a transparent hacked account and doxxing a woman.

Owen seems to be losing perspective and displaying some increasingly concerning behaviour. Who radicalised him and when are we going to have a conversation about the radicalisation of trans supporters online?

MagnoliaTaint · 23/05/2022 13:22

I agree, pot, that the recent instances of Owen 1. bullying other (female) staff at his place of work and 2. setting his followers on a woman when it seems highly likely she was victim of a hacking attempt and 3. trying to find out the details of a schoolgirl who'd deliberately wanted to remain anonymous, are all stacking up to look to me like a worrying pattern.

I haven't followed him much- I'm not on Twitter and I find him too reactive and argumentative to ever say anything interesting; he seems to be fuelled entirely by indignant rage.

So I've not really understood why so many women/feminists talk about him as problematic. Until now.

If you are a supporter of OJ and have been brought to Mumsnet because of his comments, welcome. What do you think about this whole situation? Am I wrong to start to see a repeated pattern in Owen's interactions with women?

ScreamingMeMe · 23/05/2022 13:29

Now someone is impersonating another GC account to try and get money out of people.

Any GC person on twitter needs to be vigilant. Seems like TRA trolls are on the attack at the moment.

I just went back and tried to check my long deactivated account. It won't allow me to log in to reactivate - I can't access, there's no way of contacting anyone, and yet it appears my account still exists in some sense, so I can't create a new one.

This is another reason I've long hated Twitter. It's virtually unusable and then if you do use it, it does nothing but foster bad feeling. I wish Elon Musk would buy it and then delete the bloody thing.

I'm the same. I've never tweeted anything but have liked tweets.

I see from this that even just liking a tweet about Brexit is deemed unacceptable behaviour. I have not done that but have liked tweets which are no doubt equally unacceptable.

MagnoliaTaint · 23/05/2022 14:05

That's us scunnered, Kimiko. Expect a knock from the polis any minute, followed by the witch-finder and the unruly mob.

Abhannmor · 23/05/2022 15:09

Nah he looks too callow for Witchfinder. I see him more as the French revolutionary Saint - Juste aka the Angel of Death. He had hundreds shot or guillotined but was only 26 when he met the same fate.

YetAnotherSpartacus · 23/05/2022 15:23

Owen does have nice pussies though.

PurgatoryOfPotholes · 23/05/2022 15:38

Ereshkigalangcleg · 23/05/2022 09:27

IW got called the American f-word for gay, and two repetitions of a sentence that would be deleted on MN.

Angela received the most British abuse: "slag bitch".

Thanks Potholes. So no quotes from Julia Long or Jane Clare Jones then?

Nope. No feminist references. Perhaps OJ genuinely thought, "GC feminists are the only people who could think such things", but anyone who's ever been around some working class men in a pub knows that's not true.

Interesting character.

'"You have to punish not only the traitors, but even those who are indifferent; you have to punish whoever is passive in the republic, and who does nothing for it"

Confused

(I wasn't necessarily thinking of OJ!)

MagnoliaTaint · 23/05/2022 16:47

The woman's employer has posted on Twitter.

'the supposed employee has stated that they did not write these words, and the words supposedly written by them have caused them a huge level of personal distress as they do not hold views of this nature. They have contacted Twitter and other appropriate authorities to address this matter'.

I wasn't brought here by Owen's comments, but I've followed him for years and used to think he was a good sort. He really started to go a bit strange in about 2018 although there were inklings of strangeness before that (obsessively doctoring Wikipedia pages about Israel when at Uni, for example, or storming off a TV interview during a debate about the Pulse nightclub shootings because it was reasonably suggested by his interlocutor that an Islamic fundamentalist might have a misguided dislike of gay nightclubs on religious grounds).

He really started losing it during the Corbyn years, when he couldn't decide whether he was pro or anti, and then finally jumped the shark on the trans issue. I have noticed that there are a number of commentators and cultural influencers, most of whom I think are grifters on principle, who have been made insane by supporting the extreme end of trans 'rights' - I would imagine the cognitive dissonance involved is simply not compatible with sanity. In Owen's case, his shark jumping is revealing a deep seated casual contempt for women, as also revealed by people like Adrian Harrop, Frankie Boyle, and others. I've found it all very interesting and instructive to observe.

Thank goodness they're sensible at least - do you think LOJ may apologise for setting his attack dogs on her?

Plasmodesmata · 23/05/2022 17:13

do you think LOJ may apologise for setting his attack dogs on her?

What do we reckon? It'll somehow still be her fault. Or our fault. Or some woman somewhere's fault.

PurgatoryOfPotholes · 23/05/2022 17:13

Please may she not lose her job.

crosstalk · 23/05/2022 17:13

@Schnoobly I have never ever seen anything on MN which has people criticising men for long hair, make up or anything which is so called feminine. Even Gransnet remembers the days of the Sixties, Seventies, Eighties when men with long hair and makeup was a Thing.

If you have seen this, please link.

RoyalCorgi · 23/05/2022 17:27

I think this is an astute point. Social media seems to compel people to pick a side on an issue (Brexit and Covid restrictions being other examples) and then never back down, regardless of the evidence. Trans activism is an extreme version of that, because once you've decided you're all in favour of trans rights, you have to keep on defending them, even as it becomes clear that the central demands are completely lunatic and being made by people who are deeply unsavoury.

RoyalCorgi · 23/05/2022 17:34

I think what's happening here is that we're winning. The vast amounts of abuse directed at gc women hasn't been successful in promoting the trans cause (quite the opposite), so continuing the spirit of DARVO, the next stage is to make it look as if gc women are the ones doling out the abuse. Hence the hacking of accounts. I imagine we're going to see a lot more of it over the coming weeks and months.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 23/05/2022 17:43

Two step authentication, people.

Plasmodesmata · 23/05/2022 17:43

I don't think this case was even that sophisticated. There was nothing about the account that suggested she was even aware of the issues. It looked like random troll attack, picking four people in the public eye and going for a full bingo card of abuse.

What was interesting was certain people using it to try to get a woman fired without pausing to think for a moment.
Did Angela Rayner or Ian Wright comment at all?

Plasmodesmata · 23/05/2022 17:45

And the lesson here is - if you are a woman with a twitter account don't use your a) real name b) photo or c) place of work on it, just in case.

MagnoliaTaint · 23/05/2022 17:47

Ereshkigalangcleg · 23/05/2022 17:43

Two step authentication, people.

But ... I can't get into my a/c to delete or secure it!

mrshoho · 23/05/2022 19:17

I've just set up 2 step authentication. I never really tweet or reply but I've liked and followed various GC posts. Horrible how innocent people are being hacked and I hope Owen Jones will now acknowledge that this person was unfairly targeted. You would have thought someone of his intelligence and twitter experience would have sussed it straight away.

According to some
people, just glancing in MN’s general direction will do the job?

Are you saying you are not radicalised?

According to some people, just glancing in MN’s general direction will do the job?

Are you saying you are not radicalised?

I don’t feel radicalised, I feel middle-aged and sensible, whilst much of the world appears to have gone stark-raving bonkers when I wasn’t paying attention. It’s early days for me here, but it appears there may be some more sensible people here. I’m drinking more tea than usual though, perhaps that’s as radical as I get 😳

Complete level 4, win all the gold coins, and backflip through Style & Beauty while wearing Ugg Boots.

Well, I’m out then. Ugg … ugghh. And a backflip, ha, not a chance! Chronic sciatica😫

I don’t understand very well how Twitter works, but whenever it comes up it seems like a site where people just hate on each other relentlessly. I don’t understand why anyone would want to be on it, I’ll be steering well clear. I’m glad the situation seems to be getting resolved, I’ve been on the receiving end of homophobic abuse before, and while I’m pretty thick-skinned, it’s not pleasant.
